Our Learning

  • Spelling

At George Spicer, our curriculum intent for spelling is to equip learners with the essential skills required for accurate written communication. We use ELS (Essential Letters and Sounds) Spelling Programme. We aim to foster a deep understanding of the fundamental principles of spelling, including phonetic patterns, morphological structures, and etymological roots. By systematically addressing common spelling challenges and exceptions, our curriculum promotes both confidence and competence in spelling across all subject areas.

Through a progressive and tailored approach, students will engage with a diverse range of spelling strategies, including mnemonic devices and word families. Regular and meaningful assessments are used to monitor progress, enabling targeted interventions when necessary. Our overarching goal is to inspire a lifelong enthusiasm for language, nurturing not only proficient spellers but also articulate communicators. Ultimately, the curriculum seeks to lay a solid foundation for advanced literacy skills, critical for academic success and future employment opportunities in an increasingly literate society.
