Year 1

As our children move from the EYFS Reception classes into Year 1, the transition plays a very important part in the autumn term, where we continue to follow the Early Learning Goals from Reception. This is to ensure that the children adapt to the National Curriculum with ease as we continue to foster and develop the children’s love of learning. Our main focus continues to be communication through the spoken word to progress the oracy skills for all children as quality interactions are the foundation of our learning.

We follow The Literacy Tree for our writing, which uses language rich books which are reflective of both our children and our community. In maths, we build upon the number skills learnt in Reception and begin to work on times tables as well as word problems to further develop both critical thinking and problem-solving skills using manipulative and real-life concepts.

In our Year 1 curriculum, we aspire to foster a love of learning that nurtures each child’s natural curiosity. Through exploring the fascinating world of science, we engage our pupils with hands-on experiences using various materials, investigating changing seasons, and understanding diverse weather patterns from around the globe. Our curriculum also encourages an appreciation for animals and plants, highlighting their interdependence within ecosystems. By cultivating a sense of awe and wonder whilst encouraging inquiry, we support holistic child development, equipping our students with essential knowledge and skills to thrive as inquisitive and compassionate global citizens.
