Parent Representatives

What is a class representative?

A class representative is a parent or carer who represents the other parents/carers of the class their child is in.  We like to suggest that each class has two representatives to share out the responsibilities and provide back up if one isn’t available for any reason.

For Reception parents/carers, it can be helpful if one class rep already has a child at the school and one is a parent/carer new to the school, who can then be shown the ropes. Helping out with this role is also a great way to meet and make new contacts and friends.

What do they do?

The main responsibilities of the class representatives are as follows:

• Attend class rep meetings with the headteacher according to availability; don’t worry this really doesn’t take up much of your time.  All meetings are in the school calendar and online.
• Take information back to your class’s parents/carers about the school and feedback information to the school about any issues that might be impacting on your class or year group. In the past we have discussed and had input from the parent reps on homework, behaviour, building project, events and OFSTED priorities.
• Organise a rota to cover your classes allocated stall at Christmas Bazaar and Summer Fun Day. Booking in half hour shifts with other parents/carers of your class has this covered in no time. 
•  Help collect donations for Christmas Bazaar and Summer Fun Day from class on collection day and, if possible, help FOGS members sort/store it.
• Organise teacher and teaching assistants' card and gift collections (Christmas and end of year). This can be done by giving an envelope with a couple of stickers and a note to each of the parents and carers. The parents/carers return the envelope with their donation plus the signed stickers from the children. The stickers then get put in the card and the money goes towards the gift.
• Remind parents of forthcoming events such as the FOGS events and class trips (setting up a WhatsApp group can be helpful for this).
• Welcome new children and parents to the school (starting during the year) and making sure they are introduced and included.
• Suggest/book an evening out from time to time for a well-deserved social with the other parents and carers in your class (Christmas and end of year). There’s always plenty to talk about.

How long do the class representatives undertake their role for?

Normally for the school year (September – July).  They can carry on in the following year or another parent/carer can take over.

Are class reps also FOGS members?

They can be but it is not automatic.  Anyone can join FOGS (who also meet regularly).  There is a separate information sheet about FOGS and what they do.
