George Spicer newsletter - 23rd March 2023

Parent Consultation Day - Friday 24th March 2023  - Our Spring Term Parent Consultation Day will be held on Friday 24th March 8.30am-6pm. This is a designated INSET day, meaning that your child will only attend school for their learning review meeting.

Punctuality - The school gates open at 8.45am for a soft start to support a calm arrival to school. All our pupils are expected to be in class for registration by 09:00 am. The school gates are then locked at this point.  Pupils need to be in school by 09:00 am for registration. If your child arrives after 09:00 am, they will receive a late mark (L). If your child arrives after 09:10 am, they will receive a 'U' code (missed session) on their registration certificate which will impact on their overall attendance percentage.

Absences - must be reported in writing by email or by phone by 9am daily. Please leave a brief message with your child's name, class and the reason for their absence.  It will be recorded as unauthorised if you do not leave a reason or say your child is 'unwell'.

Rainbow Class

In Rainbow Class this week we have been looking at verb tenses and what happens when a verb changes from present tense to past tense. To help us with our learning this week we have been playing matching and memory games with verbs. In our writing we have been practising using some of these verbs to consolidate our learning.  We played memory games using verbs which also helped to improve our thinking skills, turn taking, concentration and attention span. We also worked on our Rainbow Class targets whilst playing the game, which is to build on our resilience and are learning to ‘try new things without the fear of failure’. 

Reception Class

If you asked the children of Bluebell Class their favourite day of the week they would either say Friday because of fish and chips for lunch or Tuesday because it is their bike day.

Each Reception Class has a day allocated to them for when the children can ride the bikes and scooters around the track. You would be surprised at the speed and accuracy of some of our riders. Monday - Snowdrop, Tuesday - Bluebell, Wednesday - Daffodil and Thursday - Primrose.   

Freddie told us, "Riding a bike is good exercise."

Hazem said, "Everyday I like the bikes."

"Scooting makes me feel happy because I can go fast." shared Monty. 

Inaya commented that "I'm feeling good when I'm on the bikes and scooters."

Aisha said, "she likes to ride on the back of the scooter because it is so fast." 

Whatever the reason the children rush to the bikes at least we know they are keeping healthy and learning a lifelong skill.

Year 1

This week in Year 1 we have been learning about Mary Seacole. In Writing, we have been writing a letter to an editor detailing the events of Mary's life. We looked closely at using conjunctions to extend our ideas and we looked at using emotive language to express Mary's feelings.

Year 2

We have continued to look carefully at our broad beams this week in Year 2 and some have grown very well! In science we learned that even in the dark plants can germinate and they grow very tall because they are seeking out light.  In our writing we wrote about the life cycle of a broad bean.  In PSHE, our topic is Being Healthy and we have been learning about what food groups our body needs to grow strong and help us to stay healthy.

Year 3 

This Tuesday the children came to school in their glorious Roman costumes as it was Roman Day. They had a fun filled day learning all about the Romans. From researching the roman gladiators, to making honey biscuits (a favourite snack of the soldiers), everyone enjoyed getting involved in the activities. The children also learnt about mosaics and how they were used by the Romans in their homes as symbols of wealth and status. After observing and discussing some examples, Year 3 tried their hand at creating their own mosaics using a range of beans, lentils and rice. Some examples can be seen below. 

Year 5 

This week in Year 5, we have been learning about amphibian lifecycles. We focused on the lifecycle of a salamander. The children created labelled diagrams of the different stages and then used given key vocabulary to write a more detailed description of the events that occur in each stage.

Year 6 

Year 6 visits the Imperial War Museum Duxford

To enhance our learning in our World War II topic, the Year 6 travelled to the Imperial War Museum Duxford. It was fascinating to listen to someone, that lived through the war as a child, talk about their experience. Each of the Year 6 classes are named after planes in the RAF during World War II. We saw some of these planes at the museum as well as many others. There were opportunities to try out costumes and to sit inside the cockpit of replica planes. There was even a hangar where engineers were working on and repairing some Spitfires, so the engine parts and the insides of these planes were out for all to see. Some of the children were surprised to see how big these planes were. They were also amazed at how large the tanks were and they could spot some similarities and differences between the tanks used by the different nations.

Even though the Concorde was built after World War II, the children had the opportunity to sit inside one of these historical planes, which are no longer in use. They were surprised to find out that a ticket to travel on one of these planes costs upward of £4000! Overall, the Year 6 had a productive day looking  at the planes, tanks  costumes and artefacts and gained some additional knowledge about World War II.

HAF Holiday Camp

Learning Hive are working on behalf of Enfield Council to deliver the Holiday Activities food programme (HAF) within the Borough.
