George Spicer newsletter - 22nd April 2021

Welcome back! We hope you've all had a restful Easter break. It's been lovely to see everyone in school this week, ready to start the Summer term.

Reminders

  • Please continue to maintain social distancing when waiting to drop off/collect your child and always wear a mask whilst on school premises.
  • Water bottles should only have water in them. We are a healthy school and no squash or juices should be brought in.
  • For children that are doing Multi-Sports, children are to come in wearing school uniform and to bring in sports kit to change into ready for clubs.

Quote of the week

“My first principle is to never let oneself be beaten down by persons or events” Marie Curie

Attendance week ending 22/04/2021

Overall school = 96.56%    Lates = 78

Best attendance: 1st  Sioux  99.52%  2nd Oak, Elm Achilles - 99.05%

Punctuality: Well done Oak, Sparrow and Sioux all with 100% for punctuality

Year 3 - English

This week in English Year 3 have been learning about Edgar the Peaceable's very tricky love triangle. They were shocked to learn that Edgar's closest friend, Aethelwald, betrayed the King and married the most beautiful maiden in England (who Edgar wanted to marry). As a result of this betrayal the two friends went hunting when an unfortunate accident occurred. The children have enjoyed looking carefully at each key moment in this story and empathising with how each person felt at each stage of the story.

Year 5 - 'In the Tomb of the Pharaoh'

This week, Year 5 began their new topic 'In the Tomb of the Pharaoh' which is all about Ancient Egypt. They had a visit from Hobgoblin Theatre Company and enjoyed a drama workshop in the afternoon. The children also put their origami skills to the test, creating bookmarks based on the Egyptian gods. We are looking forward to learning more about the Egyptians throughout the next term.

Easter activities

The teachers have been hearing about all the activities that children have been getting up to during the Easter holidays. Here's a photo of Chloe in Odysseus, who was very busy making these wonderful Easter cupcakes. And Jess in Sparrow was delighted to be out and about on her bike in the sunshine again.

We love seeing what the children are up to outside of school, enjoying themselves. Send in any pictures you'd like to share in the school newsletter.

The Big Pedal

The Big Pedal is a national event where schools up and down the country will be encouraging pupils to cycle to school and takes place the week of the 26th April.   If your child has a bike or scooter and would like to be given the opportunity to ride it on the school playground then please bring it to school on their allocated year group day.

**************NO electric scooters please *************

MONDAY 26th: Years 1 & 3

TUESDAY 27th: Years 2 & 4

WEDNESDAY 28th: Year 5

THURSDAY 29th: Year 6

Reception: Primrose -Monday, Daffodil - Tuesday, Bluebell - Wednesday, Snowdrop - Thursday

In order for your child to participate, please make sure:

1)your child wears a correctly fitting helmet which they are able to put on and remove themselves

2) the bike or scooter must be in good working order.

3) your child must be able to ride independently

Please make sure helmets and bikes/scooters are named.    For Health and Safety, if your child does not have a helmet they will NOT be allowed to take part.

Your child should take their bike or scooter to the bike and scooter racks on the big playground and put them wherever there is space.  Staff will be on hand to support children.  Helmets can be stored on the handlebars or hung on their peg.

We understand that security may be a concern for some parents, especially at Sketty Road.  On their allocated day, the children will be allowed access to the bike racks 5 minutes before the main gates open.  In future weeks, we would recommend your child secures their bike or scooter with a lock.

Wish you could cycle every day and not just on your year group day? Don't forget our Sketty Road School Streets is an ideal space for a bit of extra cycling or scootering before and after school.  Please be mindful of pedestrians and remember to wear a helmet!  We are also very lucky to have two large flat parks on our doorstep.  Perfect for safe cycling before and after school.

                                         "Edible Garden" news

We are delighted to inform you that we have secured funding for an Edible Gardens project which is happening this term.  Every class will be given an opportunity to grow a plant that can be eaten.

If you have green fingers and a spare 15 minutes after drop off or before pick up to help tend your child's class garden, please let the office know.  Help will also be needed planting and tending the sensory garden at Sketty Road site and the allotment area at Kimberley Gardens.  If this is something you are interested in helping with either as a one off to prepare and plant the area, or as part of a rota to tend to the garden please let us know.  'Many hands make light work' and it is so rewarding to eat something you have helped to grow.

More on this next week once we've started ordering equipment, seeds and meeting contractors to help with our planning.

Miss Spillman's Esafety tips

Rec Room is a social game, where you meet up with friends to explore and create rooms, each containing a different experience. One room might be a game of rugby or hockey, while another could be a parkour course or virtual gymnastics. Available on a range of devices, Rec Room is kidSAFE COPPA Certified and carries an age rating of 9+. Nonetheless, parents and care should remain mindful that gaming online with strangers always comes with a potential risk.  Make sure you have the conversations with your child about who they connect with, how long they are allowed to use the device as well as being aware of 'friends' they have never met in real life.

Enfield Town Junior Parkrun

Georgina from Woodpecker joined her first parkrun at the beginning of the Easter holidays, she's already doing amazingly well coming 8th out of 50 children.

Georgina's mum advised us 'it’s such a well organised (and free) event that I am sure other families would love'.  The focus is on the taking part and trying your best, not racing others.

Please see link and info below if you wish your child to join. Let's see how many George Spicer children can support this brilliant, healthy initiative.

Junior Parkrun

Enfield Town junior parkrun takes place every week on a Sunday at 9:00am

Tips

Don't forget your paper barcode! See your initial registration email, your weekly parkrun newsletter, previous results emails, or you can request a reminder email. Phones don't scan, so please bring a printed copy.

OWL - Communication with police

Enfield police has joined up with  www.OWL.co.uk which is a neighbourhood watch website with the added bonus of two way communication with the police. It offers an opportunity for residents to communicate and engage with the police more often and regularly. We are trying to get as many residents signed up as possible to help make the streets a safer place with the help of the public.
