George Spicer Newsletter - 9th October 2026

Parent Consultation Evening:

Parent Consultation Evening bookings are now live. Appointments will be held face-to-face in school.

If you have not yet booked your appointment, please log in to Arbor. If you are experiencing any difficulties, please contact the school office and we will be happy to help. We look forward to seeing you. 😊

Please note there will be no teacher-led after-school clubs during parent consultation week (week beginning Monday 19th October).

Please make sure your children do not scoot or ride through the playgrounds and take care on the pavements around school as we have lots of younger children and older community members who may be liable to get injured.

Donations for Reception/Year 1 Junk modelling:

Reception and Year 1 would be very happy if you could please send in any empty boxes, cartons and other cardboard items for junk modelling. Some of our best creations come from these items.

However, under Benedict's Law, which came into effect on 1st September 2026, News - Anaphylaxis UK, we are unable to accept the following items:

Egg cartons / milk cartons or any packaging that says manufactured in a factory where nuts may have been found.

Thank you for your support with this.

This week, pupils began their learning about Black History Month and the 2026 theme, “Honouring Our Communities." We explored how Black and Mixed Heritage people have helped shape Britain and especially our local community in Enfield.

Key Messages from the Assembly

  • Black History Month is celebrated every October and encourages us not only to learn about Black people, but also to learn from their experiences and contributions.

  • We discussed what it means to be Black and British and how Britain is enriched by people from many different backgrounds and cultures.

  • The children learned about author Dame Malorie Blackman, our whole school BHM Champion this year, and why representation in books is so important.

  • We explored the idea of community and recognised the many people who help our school and local area thrive, including families, school staff, volunteers and community organisations.

  • My assembly highlighted the contributions of several people connected to Enfield, including Daphne Marche MBE, Lorenzo Finegan, Philip and Letetia Morris, Lincoln Reid and Joan Dobson, Cynthia Greenaway, Lenna Gunning-Williams and the Enfield Caribbean Association.

What We Can Learn

  • Be kind and inclusive.

  • Respect others and celebrate differences.

  • Work hard and believe in ourselves.

  • Help others and contribute positively to our community.

  • Listen to and learn from other people’s stories.

We finished by reflecting on how every child can make a positive difference in our school community through kindness, respect and helping others. Together, we can make our school an even stronger and more welcoming place for everyone.

Harvest Festival

On Monday, Enfield Foodbank came to school to deliver an assembly to the children. The assembly provided an opportunity for the children to learn more about the important work Enfield Foodbank does to support people in our local community. It also helped us to think about how small acts of kindness and generosity can make a real difference to others.

Thank you to all our families that made donations. Your contributions will support our local community and help Enfield Foodbank to continue providing assistance to those who need it. We are grateful for the time, care and generosity shown by our school community.

Reception

This week in Reception, we have been reading Oh Dear, Look What I Got! by Michael Rosen. We have been exploring rhyming words and having lots of fun listening for words that rhyme.

In Maths, we have been learning about subitising â€” recognising how many objects there are without needing to count them one by one. We have been practising this using dots, objects and different arrangements.

Year 1

This week, Year 1 have been learning about position and direction. We have been using words such as left, right, above, below, next to, in front of and behind to describe where objects are. We have also enjoyed learning about quarter, half and three quarter turns, giving and following directions through fun, practical activities!

Year 2

If you step into the school playground, you may notice it covered in bright, colourful patterns! This is because Year 2 have been learning about the celebration of Holi, a colourful festival that marks the arrival of spring, during their RW lessons.

In Writing, the children have been writing in role Goldilocks, using Me and You by Anthony Browne to inspire their own stories. They have worked really hard to structure their writing with a clear beginning, middle and end, while bringing the character of Goldilocks to life.

Year 3

Year 3 have continued developing their scientific enquiry skills by investigating different soils. They enjoyed getting their hands dirty by observing and handling the soils, before testing how well each held or drained water. The children used their observations to compare the soils and suggest suitable uses for each.

Year 3 have also enjoyed revisiting the story of Rama and Sita, building on their learning from Reception and developing their understanding of Hindu beliefs and traditions. This links to UNCRC Article 14: freedom of thought, belief and religion.

Year 4

We have enjoyed another busy and fulfilling week in Year 4. We began the week listening to a visitor speak about Harvest Festival and the importance of helping those who may rely on foodbanks to feed the family. It allowed us to reflect on the value of food, the importance of helping those less fortunate and reinforcing the sense of community support.

In Science this week, we have been learning about evaporation. Our kitchen staff set us the challenge of exploring the big question, "What helps to dry aprons the quickest?".  We tested this by applying air at speed (using a fan) and in a separate test we used heat ( a water bottle) to see whether these variables would have an effect on how quickly the material dried. We also carried out a "control" test ( without either applied). We made predications, discussed fair testing and concluded our findings for the kitchen staff. We would highly recommend that they dry their aprons in front of fans or outside on a dry windy day for best results!

The children continue to work hard, creating their play scripts for a screenplay of "Tar Beach." The children have explored using tag questions for effect and apostrophes to show informality. We look forward to hearing these wonderful play scripts and seeing the adventures of Cassie and BeBe come to life!

Year 5

Year 5 have been rock stars during music lessons. They are learning to sing the Bon Jovi classic, Living On A Prayer, accompanied by a range of percussion instruments.

In French lessons, the children have learned how to give their opinions on a number of sports activities, by explaining their likes and dislikes.

Year 5's geography topic is 'Why is California so thirsty?' We found out that a single almond needs four and a half litres of water to grow. Farmers are forced to drill down and pump for groundwater in order to irrigate their crops. If this continues, the groundwater may only last for another 5 years. This was linked to Global Goal 11 Sustainable cities and communities, GG12 - Responsible production and Consumption and GG13 - Climate Action.

Year 6

The Round City: Baghdad

In History, this half-term, we have been learning about the creation of the round city of Baghdad.

We began by learning all about Al-Mansur's great plans for a perfectly round city that would last for generations. We have since learnt how this was funded (through tax -revenues) and that this was a place of great learning. In fact, universities were created based off of the schools created in this great city. We look forward to what else we will discover about this intriguing city in the coming weeks.

Ambassadors News

This week, the Ambassadors have been working hard to create suggestion boxes for their classes. The children discussed the importance of having a voice and being able to share their ideas, opinions, and suggestions. They linked this to Article 13 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which states that children have the right to express their thoughts and opinions freely.
