Year 1

This week in Year 1, the children have been busy creating beautiful clay crowns in their Design and Technology lessons. This exciting project has linked closely with our History topic on Queens, giving the children the opportunity to explore royal traditions and think about the special crowns worn by queens throughout history. The children used a range of tools to shape, mould and add detail to their clay crowns, developing their understanding of how different tools can be used to manipulate materials. They thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on experience of working with clay, exploring different techniques and expressing their creativity.

Year 2

This week, Year 2 have been taking part in transition activities in preparation for moving to the Sketty Road site next year. The children visited their new classrooms and met their new teachers. They also had the opportunity to explore the school and find out where their new classroom, cloakroom, playground, dinner hall and toilets are located.

During our visit, we spent time in the ICT room using the computers and enjoyed using the climbing frame in the small playground. The children are all very excited about the move and understandably, may be feeling a little nervous about the changes ahead.

We have also been practising our sewing skills. The children have explored a range of different stitches before designing their own bookmarks. Over the next few days, we hope to complete our bookmarks and look forward to sharing the finished results with you. Here are some that the children have already completed.

Year 3

Year 3: History – The Library of Alexandria.

In Year 3, we have been learning all about the wonderful Library of Alexandria. The children were fascinated to discover how Ptolemy built the library and how knowledge was carefully collected, written on scrolls and organised for people to use. We talked about why this was so important and how it helped to share ideas.

The children then had a go at making their own scrolls. They worked hard to write useful pieces of information on them, just like scribes from long ago. Some children even challenged themselves by writing in ancient Greek, which was fantastic to see! It was lovely to watch everyone showing curiosity, creativity and great concentration.

Year 4

Year 4 have become historical artists. They used watercolours to paint beautiful portraits of the Pharaoh and 'Boy King' Tutankhamun.

Year 5

Last week, Year 5 enjoyed a fantastic visit to Kingsmead Secondary School, where we took part in an exciting Art workshop inspired by the famous British sculptor Antony Gormley. Gormley is well known for creating large-scale sculptures of the human body, including a remarkable project called Field, which is made up of around 40,000 small clay figures, each one individually created by hand.

During the workshop, the children learnt a range of clay modelling techniques and explored how to use different sculpting tools to add detail and texture. They also took inspiration from the artwork displayed around the art studio to help develop their own ideas.

Just like Gormley's Field installation, our clay figures will remain at Kingsmead to become part of a large collaborative display. Before leaving, each child carefully created a chalk drawing of their sculpture on black paper. The Kingsmead staff kindly arranged these into beautiful class displays for us to bring back to school, where they are now proudly displayed in our classrooms. It was a wonderful opportunity to work creatively in a secondary school environment and experience art in a new and inspiring way.

Year 6

What a fantastic way to end the year! We are incredibly proud of all the children for their outstanding performances in The Lion King. They showed confidence, enthusiasm and real teamwork throughout every performance, and we hope you enjoyed watching them as much as we enjoyed seeing all of their hard work come together. Thank you to all the parents and carers for being such wonderful, supportive audiences – it meant so much to the children.

This week, the children also completed their textiles project by finishing their pencil cases. Throughout the unit, they developed a range of sewing skills, including running stitch, back stitch and blanket stitch, before designing and making their own unique products. The photographs in this newsletter showcase their finished designs, and I'm sure you'll agree they look fantastic. We hope their pencil cases will become a special keepsake to remind them of their time at primary school.

Finally, it is hard to believe that Friday will be our last day together. It will be a very emotional occasion as we say goodbye to such a wonderful Year 6 cohort. They have been a pleasure to teach, and we are incredibly proud of everything they have achieved. We wish every one of them the very best as they begin the next exciting chapter of their journey at secondary school.
