George Spicer Newsletter - 5th June 2026

I hope you all enjoyed the unseasonably warm weather over the half-term holiday and got to spend some quality time together as families.  It is hard to believe that we are already into the second half of the Summer Term, with at the time of writing this just 31 school days left in the year.  In September, as always, I challenge the children to be the best them they can be and to set goals they want to achieve – we have revisited this idea in assemblies and class time this week, perhaps ask your children if they can remember what it was they wanted to improve or ask them what they are most proud of achieving this year.

From a whole school perspective, ignoring House Points for a second as that will get announced in due course, there have been 6159 Bronze awards; 2318 Silver Awards; 1322 Gold Awards and 48 Headteacher Tea Parties with many more already on the list.  These are fantastic achievements and go to show how hard your children work both on their learning as well as showing our Be’s and Values to demonstrate and develop good charater.

This half-term, no matter what, is always ludicrously busy with performances, events like Sports Days and trips as well as opportunities for the whole community to come together, like FoGS Fest.  Alongside finishing a year with things like reports, assessments and Parent Consultation meetings (Remember to book if you haven’t), we are already planning for next year and information about next classes and teachers will be released in due course.  I hope to see as many of you as possible over the coming weeks, celebrating your children’s successes and their work.  FYI – be prepared to get involved in Sports Day for your Colour Houses – if you don’t know what House your child is in either ask them or look at their PE Top.

Our value for this half-term is Resilience – keeping going when it seems tough or easier to give up.  I shared with the KS2 children this list of things resilient people do: Work hard and quietly; Have a clear purpose; Take lots of action; Believe in themselves; Be curious; Stay calm; Be hungry for it!; Learn from mistakes; Ask for help; Stay positive but realistic; Focus on what they can control.  Perhaps you can talk to your children about when you have had to do any of these.  I always say that I want children to fail at George Spicer, because that means you are trying something new and more difficult, as well as giving them the kills and mindset to bounce back and try again – so I’ve asked them to all be more Tigger and bounce back from a mistake or failure wherever and whenever possible.

So only a few weeks left of the term/ year but instead of counting the days, make the days count!

Reception

This week we had a visit from Fito the Orangutan.  He played some games with the children and they were able to interact with him.   We learnt about his origin story and his family.   The children loved meeting Fito and some other animals from the jungle.  Some children had the opportunity to act on a green screen and watch themselves back, in the jungle, alongside scary animals.  Mrs Mangiapane even got involved in the action!

Year 1

In Year 1, we had an amazing time on our trip to Southend Sea Life Centre! The children loved exploring all the different areas and learning about life under the sea. We saw lots of fascinating creatures, from bright, colourful fish to some very unusual underwater animals, and there were plenty of excited faces as we moved from one display to the next. We also got to know plenty of land-loving animals, including the cheeky monkeys, curious meerkats and the waddling-wonderful Humboldt penguins. The children enjoyed learning how we can help protect our oceans too. It was a brilliant day out, full of fun, discovery, and lots of smiles.

Year 2

This week Year 2 have been learning about the Stone Age and the meaning of the word prehistoric. We learned that prehistory is the time before recorded history and before humans could write. Anything that lived or was made during this time is considered prehistoric.

We looked at some prehistoric artefacts, including cave paintings, which were an early form of communication for our Stone Age ancestors. As our ancestors could not write, they used charcoal, berries, earth and ground-up rocks to create pictures showing animals and hunting scenes. Here are some of our cave paintings.

In Science, we have been exploring the properties of different materials and the ways they can be used. We learned that some materials can be manipulated and will spring back into shape, while others can be twisted, squashed, pushed and pulled but may not return to their original form. We pushed, pulled, squeezed and twisted aluminium foil to create these lovely models.

Year 3

Year 3: Writing

We have started a new class book, The Thames and Tide Club, and the children have already shown great enthusiasm for the story. They have been developing their reading skills by exploring the text together and discussing the characters and setting in detail. This week, the children pretended to be mudlarks, imagining life along the riverbanks and searching for hidden treasures. They also explored ambitious language to describe the fantastic objects they might discover. This has supported their vocabulary development and encouraged imaginative thinking.

Year 4

This week in Maths,  Year 4 have been learning all about coordinates. We have been practising using the x and y axis by using the phrase 'along the corridor and up the stairs' to remember the order we need to plot our coordinates. We had the opportunity to play the game Battleships with our partner to further our understanding. Then, we began plotting multiple points to form polygons. We tested our partners to see if they could guess the shape we were drawing. We had to give very clear instructions to ensure our partner connected the points in the correct order (and using a ruler, of course!).

Year 5

Year 5 Art – Inspired by David Hockney

This term, Year 5 have been learning about the work of David Hockney and how artists use perspective to create depth in landscapes. The children learnt about one-point perspective and vanishing points before sketching their own landscape designs in pencil and refining them in pen.

They explored the advantages and disadvantages of different artistic media and considered colour combinations before choosing to work with watercolours, colouring pencils or oil pastels. Using techniques such as blending, layering and adding detail, the children carefully completed their artwork, producing vibrant landscapes inspired by Hockney's colourful style.

Year 6

We are excited to be back for our final term in Year 6! It has already been a busy and productive start, with preparations well underway for our upcoming production of The Lion King. The children have been working hard to learn their lines, and this week we were delighted to welcome a dance specialist who helped us choreograph some of our performance pieces.

In English, we have begun exploring our new class text, Grimm Tales by Philip Pullman, a collection of traditional fairy tales from the Brothers Grimm. So far, the children have been learning about the key features and characteristics of fairy tales, and over the coming weeks they will use this knowledge to create and write their own original stories.

In Art, the children have designed their own posters for our Lion King production. They started by using paint to create vibrant sunset backgrounds before adding detail and imagery to transform them into eye-catching theatre posters. We are very proud of their creativity and look forward to sharing their finished work with you.

Year 6 - Junior Citizenship

Year 6 were fortunate enough this week to take part in a Junior Citizenship workshop to help them prepare for life after George Spicer as they become more independent. Hosted by Southbury Leisure centre, the children were given frank and informative talks from the Police, London Fire Brigade, the Ambulance service and Transport for London. Both the children and adults found all of the workshops informative and engaging, making for a productive and successful day.
