George Spicer Newsletter - 20th March 2026

What a week it's been at George Spicer! We've celebrated mathematical thinking, welcomed back some wonderful former pupils, and showcased the incredible talents of our children across music, dance, and the performing arts.

This week marked Maths Week in school, and it's been brilliant to see both pupils and staff embracing the challenge and the fun of mathematical problem-solving. We've had House and Year Group Quizzes – yes, even the staff couldn't resist having a go! If you fancy testing yourself, here are five questions from the quiz: What number is the Roman numeral XCV? What is 0.5 ÷ 5? Add 7778.1 to 10.0001. If 5x - 7 = 18, what is the value of x? And finally, what is 12 x 4 x 8? The highlight of the week was undoubtedly the visit from the Happy Puzzle Company, who brought mathematical problem-solving to life in the most engaging way. It's this kind of experience that reminds us that maths isn't just about numbers on a page – it's about thinking, reasoning, and discovering.

We've also had the pleasure of welcoming back some of our former pupils who have returned for work experience. It's been wonderful to see what incredible young people they've become. As I always say, a good start never stops, and it's truly heartening to witness their continued growth and success beyond George Spicer.

In our Sketty assembly this week, I shared the inspiring story of Jason McElwain, an autistic high-school student whose determination and the support of his community changed his life and inspired people around the world. His story teaches us so much about respect, kindness, inclusion, hard work, and confidence in our abilities – values that sit at the very heart of what we do here. Do ask your children about Jason and his remarkable journey or if you want to you can watch this video. I also had a bit of fun showing them that algebra can actually be enjoyable, though I can assure you I'm a mathematician, not a magician – don't worry, there are no plans to saw anyone in half for my next trick!

This week has also been a celebration of our pupils' talents. The Year 1 classes delivered fantastic performances in George Spicer Sings, showing real magic and confidence as they sang. The Year 4s demonstrated amazing progress during their strings concerts, playing their violins and violas with real gusto. Our KS2 Dance Club, led by Mrs Hember, put on a stellar performance at the Millfield Theatre as part of the Enfield Schools Dance Festival – they were brilliant.

Finally, a huge thank you to FoGS for funding the new trim trail in the Kimberley Garden. It's been a huge hit with the children and, when nobody's looking, the staff too!

As we head into the weekend, I hope everyone enjoys the better weather, and I want to wish Eid Mubarak to all those within our community celebrating.

Reception

This week it was Maths Week! The children have been taking part in some exciting activities and games using maths. We had a visit from some children in Year 5, who taught us how to play a game called Nim 7.

'If you go first then you are the winner' noticed A in Poppy class.

'I won ' K Daffodil class.

We have also had a visit from The Happy Puzzle company'.  The children had to work together to build a variety of puzzles; this tested their teamwork skills, communication skills and critical thinking skills.

Year 1

This week, Year 1 delighted everyone with their charming performance of 'The Class Who Lost Their Sound', written by Ms Healey.   The children sang beautifully with confidence and enthusiasm, bringing lots of smiles (and a few happy tears) to the audience.  Their clear voices, expressive actions and joyful energy made it a truly lovely performance – well done Year 1!

Year 2

Over the course of this half-term, Year 2 have been enjoying our PSHE unit entitled 'Healthy Me'. This week their challenge was to create a healthy, tasty snack. They enjoyed selecting and making fruit kebabs and especially enjoyed eating them together. The children were encouraged to try all the fruits on offer, which caused some interesting class discussions.

Year 3

This week has been an exciting one for our Year 3 cohort as we celebrated Maths Week! The children engaged in a variety of maths activities, learning new games and developing strategies to enhance their chances of winning. Their resilience truly shone through as they tackled challenges with enthusiasm and determination.

We were also delighted to welcome Happy Puzzle, who facilitated a fantastic team-building experience. The children worked collaboratively to solve a range of puzzles, reinforcing the importance of teamwork. As James wisely noted, “A good team means everyone is working together.” Kendrick added, “Perseverance is when you never give up and keep trying,” highlighting the spirit of our learners.

What a wonderful week it has been for Year 3! We are so proud of their hard work and dedication.

Year 4

Year 4 have had a wonderfully busy and positive week. As part of Maths Week, our theme was Hope, and the children really embraced it. We completed a set of quizzes that challenged our thinking and encouraged us to work together as a team, supporting one another and sharing hopeful messages throughout our activities.

We also took part in a workshop run by the Happy Puzzle Company. The children worked in teams to solve a range of hands‑on puzzles and challenges. This session really highlighted their perseverance, problem‑solving skills as well as communication. It was wonderful to see them encouraging one another, staying hopeful even when tasks felt tricky, and celebrating every success together.

Towards the end of the week, we played a strategy game called Nim 7 with Year 6. The children absolutely loved collaborating with the older pupils—there was so much excitement, teamwork, and laughter as they learned new tactics and enjoyed the friendly competition.

In Science, we explored the different types of teeth humans have. The children examined a model set of teeth, labelled each type, and discussed their functions. Afterwards, they used mirrors to look closely at their own teeth and compare what they saw with the model. They were fascinated to recognise incisors, canines, and molars in their own mouths!

It’s been a week 'filled' with learning, teamwork, curiosity, and hope, plenty for the children to sink their teeth into — well done, Year 4!

Year 5

This week, Year 5 have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in a range of exciting activities as part of Maths Week.

One of the highlights was our visit to Kimberley Gardens, where we had the opportunity to work with younger pupils. Two Year 5 classes visited Reception, while the other two classes spent time with Year 1. It was fantastic to see the younger children confidently teaching our pupils a game called ‘Daisy’. We then challenged them to think carefully about strategy by asking: is it better to go first or second if you want to win?

In return, our Year 5 pupils taught their younger partners how to play ‘Nim 7’ using counters or blocks. Together, they explored some deeper mathematical thinking:

  • Are there points in the game where you can predict who will win before the end?
  • How do you know?
  • Can you find a strategy that guarantees a win from the very start?
  • Does it matter who goes first? Why or why not?

We were incredibly proud of all the children. Our Year 5 pupils were especially kind, patient, and supportive—acting as brilliant role models throughout.

Back in school, the children also worked in their house teams to complete a Maths Quiz, showing great teamwork and enthusiasm. Be sure to ask your child about the different types of questions they tackled!

It has been a wonderful week of problem-solving, collaboration, and mathematical thinking.

Year 6

This week in Year 6, we had a fantastic time exploring three-dimensional shapes! The students tackled open-ended challenges, creating different nets for a variety of polygons and experimenting with how these flat shapes could fold into 3D solids. We played with hands-on activities, built models, and even had mini-competitions to see who could create the most creative or accurate nets.

These activities helped strengthen our understanding of volume, surface area, and the properties of 3D shapes, while also boosting our visualisation and problem-solving skills. The children impressed us with their creativity, teamwork, and persistence in exploring new ideas.

We’re excited to keep building on these skills as we dive deeper into geometry next term!

Author Visit – Mark Creasy

On Monday 9th March, Year 5 and Year 6 children were lucky to have a visit from Mark Creasy, author of ‘Simon Smith – Schoolboy Spy’.  Mark talked us through his journey from being a primary school teacher to writing the ‘Simon Smith’ book series and his influences along the way. The children listened with respect and curiosity and asked some very thought-provoking questions, including “What was your inspiration for the main character?”, “How did you find the time to write a book while teaching?” and “What football team do you support?” (“sadly Spurs” was Mark’s response…). Mark also shared that he is in talks with Netflix and Amazon Prime about creating a film series of his book!

Many of our children received signed copies of his book. If you didn’t manage to purchase one, they are still on sale for the discounted price of £10, via Arbor.

Dance Festival

On Tuesday 17th March 2026, 14 children from Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 travelled to The Millfield Theatre to take part in the Annual Enfield school dance festival. This year's theme was 'Idols' and the children chose Olivia Rodrigo as someone who inspires them. The children worked very hard in their rehearsals and represented the school wonderfully both on stage and while in the theatre. Mrs Hember was very proud of the way they shone on stage.

Y5+6 Netball Matches

Over the past 2 weeks, our Year 5 and Year 6 Netball team have been competing in matches against other Enfield schools. With only a few weeks training, the team performed well, working together and making huge improvements over the 4 matches! Mr Rasheed is incredibly proud of the teamwork and resilience shown during the games, especially when facing organised and often a lot taller opposition! We have 3 matches remaining of the season and I know we will end on a high! Well done to all!

Year 5 Boys Football

Well done to the Year 5 boys who represented the school at a friendly tournament at Enfield Grammar. It was a great opportunity for the boys to play together in preparation for the competitive league next year. They all performed really well with some exceptional solo goals from Etan. Based on their performance, next season looks promising!
