George Spicer Newsletter - 19th December 2025

As we approach the end of term, I wanted to share some wonderful moments from our school community. What a busy and vibrant few weeks we've had!

Our Reception children absolutely shone in their Nativity performances, displaying remarkable confidence that warmed everyone's hearts. The festive spirit truly came alive as we walked over 450 children into Enfield Town for our community celebrations on consecutive Fridays – a sight to behold and a memory to cherish.

The Winter Wonderland event was an incredible success. So popular, in fact, that we sold out of burgers and hotdogs! A huge thank you to Friends of George Spicer (FoGS) for organising such a fantastic community afternoon that brought everyone together.

This term, we've been exploring our school value of Equality through meaningful conversations. We've delved deep into what this really means – discussing equity as giving people what they need to succeed, and justice as removing barriers to create positive change in the world. Our pupils have been learning to celebrate difference and understand fairness in its truest sense.

As we approach the holiday period, I've encouraged all our children to be as kind as possible. No matter what you believe, I hope families can make the most of this special time together.

An exciting opportunity awaits all pupils: our first House event of the year! Children can design their House Emblem or Shield, with a point awarded for each entry. I can't wait to see the creativity that emerges.

Let me celebrate some of our incredible achievements this term:

  • 973 Bronze awards
  • 803 Silver awards
  • 577 Gold certificates
  • 19,622 House Points awarded
  • 148 children nominated as Stars of the Week

Important notice: Children return to school on Monday 5th January.

Wishing everyone a peaceful and joyful holiday season.

A Big Thank you!

George Spicer would like to say a big thank you to Dunelm for having us as their chosen school for ‘delivering gifts of joy’. It has been incredible to see the generosity of the local community towards our families.  Over 100 families have benefited from the ‘gifts of joy’. The families that have received the gifts have been incredibly grateful for them. This will bring extra joy to the households over this holiday season. Thank you so much Dunelm.

We would also like to thank Tesco and the local community for donating gifts to our children here at George Spicer.

As a school staff, we have been overwhelmed at the incredible generosity of the amazing community we have around us here at George Spicer and want to wish everyone a Happy Christmas!

Reception

Leading up to Christmas, Reception have been getting into the festive spirit by writing Christmas cards to our families and enjoying Winter arts and crafts. We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Year 1

This week, Year 1 have been getting into the festive spirit by immersing themselves in a range of activities. They practised writing golden sentences, checking that they have used a capital letter, finger spaces and a full stop.

In D&T the children have worked extremely hard to create a holiday card for a special person in their lives. We used a variety of techniques and materials to create their beautiful cards. We hope you all have a lovely holiday and look forward to seeing the children in 2026!

Year 2

This week, Year 2 have been getting well and truly festive as we enjoy our final week before Christmas! We’ve been super busy with Christmas-themed reading, writing and maths, as well as lots of hands-on festive fun. The children loved making Christmas (and winter!) cards and creating salt dough decorations. There was plenty of creativity, lots of paint and yes… a little glitter may have been involved!

All of the Year 2 team would like to wish you a fun, relaxing holiday. Merry Christmas! 🎄✨

Year 3

This week, our Year 3 students completed their exciting journey through Roald Dahl’s The BFG. Inspired by the story, they enthusiastically brainstormed sandwich ideas fit for a giant!

The children engaged in a hands-on investigation, planning and tasting various ingredients to create their perfect sandwich. The highlight of the week was making our own bread from scratch, allowing everyone to explore the delightful textures of dough.

It was wonderful to see the creativity and teamwork displayed throughout this project. Well done, Year 3, your efforts and enthusiasm truly brought the story to life, and we can’t wait to see what you will explore next!

Year 4

This week we have started our new Writing adventure; we are using the novel 'Farther' by Grahame Baker-Smith as a stimulus for our writing for the next 5 weeks or so. Initially, the children were intrigued by certain images on the front cover and came up with some interesting inferences and predictions about the relationship between the father and son, as well as where the story is set.  We are all fascinated to find out whether our predictions are correct or not, and we are also looking forward to gaining some answers to the questions we have posed, such as: 'Could he be wearing angel wings?'...

Farther

We have rounded off our 'Celebrating Difference' PSHE topic, with a lesson that highlights our unique characteristics. We have thoroughly enjoyed discussing the qualities that make us unique and special. It was wonderful to hear the children talk about what they are proud of and understand that trying to compare themselves to celebrities online, is potentially damaging to their self-esteem and personal growth.  The range of different talents and qualities makes our classes so brilliantly diverse and wonderfully unique!

We would like to wish all the children and families of Year 4, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Year 5

Year 5 have continued to investigate forces in Science by exploring a range of simple mechanisms, including levers, pulleys and gears. They have been learning how these mechanisms benefit us by reducing the amount of effort needed to complete tasks. The children particularly enjoyed building and testing their own simple mechanisms in class.

In Computing, as part of our topic ‘Networks and Computer Systems’, pupils have been using Microsoft Word to create informative posters based on their prior research. Last week, they used the internet safely and effectively to research our History topic on the Romans, linking this work to UNCRC Article 17. This information was then added to their impressive posters.

Year 6

This week in Maths, Year 6 have been exploring shapes in a hands-on way. Using cubes, the children challenged themselves to create as many different rectilinear shapes as possible, all with a perimeter of 16. This activity helped them discover that shapes can have the same perimeter but different areas, and conversely, that shapes can have the same area but different perimeters. It was a fun and engaging way to deepen their understanding of these concepts.

In Science, our focus this half-term has been evolution. This week, the children completed an experiment where they picked up rice using different tools. They had a great time discovering which tools worked best, and this activity helped them understand natural selection. Just as Darwin observed on the Galápagos Islands, finches had beaks of different shapes and sizes perfectly suited to their specific food sources – strong, thick beaks for crushing seeds or slender beaks for catching insects. The experiment gave the children a hands-on insight into how adaptations work in the natural world.

Taekwondo Assemblies

Over the past few weeks, we have been delighted to welcome members of Evolve Taekwondo Club, based at Southbury Leisure Centre, into our school to deliver a series of exciting assemblies for all children. Amjid, alongside two experienced coaches from Evolve Taekwondo, introduced pupils to the skills, techniques and values that underpin the sport, while also explaining how they can become involved.

The assemblies were highly interactive, with many children enjoying the opportunity to take part in a mini-Taekwondo session on stage. Pupils enthusiastically demonstrated kicks and punches using mats and pads, gaining a real taste of what Taekwondo training involves.

If you would like to find out more about how your child can get involved in Taekwondo, please refer to the flyer at the bottom of the newsletter.

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium Trips – October and November 2025

This half-term, we were delighted to offer a number of children from Year 3 and Year 4 the exciting opportunity to visit the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for a guided tour. Over 130 pupils took part in this memorable experience at the world-famous stadium.

During the visit, the children explored the impressive collection of trophies won by Spurs over the years, including the Europa League Trophy, secured in May 2025. Pupils also enjoyed walking alongside the pitch, sitting in the corporate seating areas and even taking a seat in the players’ changing rooms—much to their excitement!
