George Spicer newsletter - Thursday 16th September 2021

Spaces available - A big welcome to all the new children who have joined the school community this term. We hope that you’re settling in well and enjoying life at George Spicer.  As families move around and have left Enfield for various reasons, we do have some spaces across the year groups. If we don’t fill these before the end of September, this impacts our funding for the next financial year. If you know of family or friends with primary school age children, please encourage them to join us by applying via the Enfield Council website Enfield Admissions

Reporting absences - If your child is unwell or will be absent from school please leave a short message on the answer machine clearly stating your child's name, class and nature of the illness.  Please advise what exactly is wrong rather than 'feeling unwell'.  Absences must be reported by 9am, either by phone or email.

Free School Meals - If your circumstances have changed and you think you may be eligible for Free School Meals, please apply here. For every pupil premium/FSM child, the school receives £1,345 per year which collectively supports teaching and learning.

Donations please - After the success of our Summer Edible Gardens project, we are hoping to brighten up the planters around both our sites with winter flowering plants and spring bulbs e.g. cyclamen & winter pansies and daffodils for the Spring. These are available to buy at most big supermarkets.  Any donations will be gratefully received.  Please bring plant donations to Sketty Road before Thursday 23rd September, leaving them next to the planters at the bottom of the ramp by Sketty Road office.

Website calendar - Our online calendar is now current and filled with diary items for this term.  Please keep an eye on this page as well as the ‘Term dates’ section at the bottom of the weekly newsletter to keep up to date with school events

Autumn term menu - The school meals menu will soon be shared on the website.  Please note that beef is now back on the menu. For families who do not eat beef, we have contacted you directly and the catering team is aware of your child.

Head lice - We've had a report of head lice at Kimberley Gardens.  Please can you check your child's hair and treat accordingly.

Traffic update Sketty Road

As mentioned last term in letters from Mr Spong, we are soon to have traffic enforcement cameras on Sketty Road. You will not be able to drive on the road between the school sites during drop off and pick up times. Please be aware. We will continue to remind you and keep you updated when we have further news. Thank you for your cooperation and for keep our children safe.

Year 1

This week Year 1 have been extending their vocabulary to support their writing about modern electric trains. We have been independently practicing our skills and working together to produce a train map, labelling key features of the trains.

Year 2

This week in Year 2 we have looked at our first explorer - Sacagawea! In Art, we have been learning some different shading techniques to create light and dark tones. We learnt that H pencils give us lighter tones, while our B sketching pencils give us darker tones.

We will be sketching a portrait of Sacagawea, so have practised sketching some of the features of the face this week. We can't wait to show you our portraits of Sacagawea next week!

Year 3

We have been using our scientific skills to create experiments and understand magnetic metals in Year 3. We firstly used a magnet to try and attract all different objects around our classroom and the playground and we came to the conclusion that it was only the metal objects that seemed to be magnetic. We then expanded our scientific knowledge and looked at what different types of metal were magnetic. It was really shocking to find that only specific types of metal are actually magnetic! It has been great to explore the subject of magnets and discuss how they are used in everyday life.

Year 4

In Geography Year 4 have been exploring the Underground Railroads that we learnt about as part of our curriculum topic about Harriet Tubman. We had the opportunity to look at the routes enslaved African-Americans would have travelled along to gain freedom. We created our own routes and explored the different southern states in America.

Year 5

In English this week, we have been enjoying writing a second person narrative all about the Greek mythology, Daedalus and Icarus. We have been linking the story of the fall of Icarus to our child rights, for example, unfortunately, the myth of Icarus tells us that he was unable to have access to information (Article 17), due to his imprisonment in the tower by the ruthless King!

We have also been enjoying our computing lessons this week, where we have learnt about search engines and also, how we must consider the reliability of the sources we use when finding out information. Year 5 have had an excellent second week and have really settled into their learning and their new Year 5 routines.

Year 6

This week, Year 6 were visited by the Young Shakespeare Company, who performed an interactive performance of Macbeth.

The children listened to the story and were able to act out parts from the play, paying particular attention to the portrayal of women throughout history. They absolutely loved it! They now have a better understanding of the plot and the characters, which will no doubt lead to some fantastic writing in our English lessons.

Also this week Year 6 have been looking at a painting by Frida Kahlo called: The Dream (The Bed). Within this painting, we can clearly see a woman asleep in a bed as a skeleton lays above her on the canopy. This made us think about the theme of “Life and Death”. In our first art lesson, this week, we thought of words that we could associate with this theme. We came up with some creative ideas and chose our favourite. In our next art lesson, we used the word selected to create different designs to explore within our sketchbook. We then, once again, selected our favourite. Next, week we will be sketching our favourite designs using different mediums as well as trying to present it in different ways.

Sketty Road Edible Gardens

Last Summer, the entire school was busy planting and growing as part of our Edible Gardens Project.  Year 5 (currently Year 6) planted potatoes to see how they grow.  A huge thank you to the Year 6 children who helped Mrs Allen digging and harvesting two bags of potatoes.  These have been sent to the school kitchen to be turned into something delicious for the children's lunch.

When you pick up your child(ren) take a few minutes to take a look at our planters along the Sketty Road railings and smell the scent of fresh herbs. Please feel free to take a sprig for your cooking at home.
