George Spicer Newsletter - 7th November 2025

Welcome Back!

I hope everyone had a restful and enjoyable half-term break. This part of the school year is always one of our busiest, with a wide range of extra-curricular events and plenty of opportunities for families to get involved and support the school community.

Our value for this half term is equality – more on this to come in future weeks. In assemblies this week, we explored the story of the Gunpowder Plot, discussing how history can be told from different perspectives and how this links to modern-day issues like fake news and the ongoing conflicts, still caused by intolerance.

We also focused on firework safety and finished by using fireworks as a metaphor for our challenge of Being your Best You:

Shine brightly

Be tolerant of others

Teamwork makes the dream work

Keep yourself safe

Appreciate the beauty of now

Accept the outcome

Be a light in someone’s darkness

We look forward to a bright, vibrant and inspiring half-term ahead!

Parent Consultation Feedback

At George Spicer Primary School, we are committed to continuously improving the experience and outcomes for our pupils and their families. Your feedback is invaluable in helping us understand how well our recent parent consultations supported you in learning about your child’s attitude to learning and how they have settled into their new class.

This was the first time we held these meetings face-to-face, and we want to know if this format worked better for you compared to online meetings. We also want to ensure that the booking process via Arbour is as smooth and easy as possible.

Please take a few moments to share your thoughts with us. Your responses will help us enhance future consultations and strengthen the partnership between home and school.

Thank you for your time and support.

Reception

This week, Reception have been making lost posters because Anansi the spider has gone missing! We have been reading a story called Anansi the spider, a story from Ghana in Africa. We have really enjoyed singing che che kule – ask your child to sing it to you.

Year 1

This week, Year 1 have been learning about Bonfire Night. They have enjoyed learning about Guy Fawkes and his plot to kill King James I, using gunpowder. They have immersed themselves into creating their own firework art work, using bright colours and glitter.

Year 2

As part of our Science learning about habitats, Year 2 visited Capel Manor College and Gardens this week. In the morning, we looked at different habitats at Capel Manor, including a pond habitat and some smaller (micro) habitats – under leaves and in the crevices of the bark of trees. We found lots of mini beasts. We discussed some of the things animals need in their habitat, including shelter, food and water. In the afternoon, we had fun looking at the animals and having the opportunity to walk around the lovely gardens. It was a fabulous day!

Year 3

This week has been a significant one for Year 3 as they have returned refreshed and eager to learn. Their focus has been on the fascinating world of Geography, specifically exploring the topic of Mountains. The children examined a topographical map of the United Kingdom, gaining a deeper understanding of what defines a mountain. They thoroughly enjoyed learning about the tallest peaks in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The enthusiasm and engagement displayed by the students have been commendable. We encourage you to ask any Year 3 child about their new discoveries; they are sure to share their excitement!

Year 4

The Year 4 team are looking forward to another term filled with learning, laughter and experiences galore! We kicked off the term this week, with a trip to the British Museum. Thames and Amazon attended on Wednesday and Rhine and Nile attended on Thursday.  We were blown away by how much knowledge they had retained from our recent 'Alexander the Great' topic but also topics they explored in Year 3. The topic-related vocabulary they used as we weaved from room to room left us grinning from ear to ear :-)

Here are some pictures taken from our wonderful trip...

In Writing, we have been creating our own set of instructions on how to plant and grow cress. This links to our writing topic, 'Varmints'. Alongside writing a sequence of instructions,

We also followed and carefully carried out the instructions by actually planting our own cress seeds. When planning and composing our instructions, we used time adverbials, imperative verbs and modal words to command the reader clearly and specifically, step-by-step. We look forward to seeing the cress flourish over the coming weeks (let's hope our little gardeners look after their plants and keep them well hydrated!).

Varmints Book Review

Year 5

Year 5 have had a fantastic start back after half-term! Mediterranean Class kicked things off with a brilliant assembly inspired by their writing on ‘The Man Who Walked Between the Towers’.

We’ve also begun reading our new text, ‘Robot Girl’ by Malorie Blackman, and have been exploring the key themes often found in science fiction stories. This has led to some lively discussions about what life might be like if AI and robots took over – we even debated whether certain state jobs, like teaching, would be better done by robots! (Our teachers had some very strong opinions about that one!)

Year 6

This half-term, Year 6 have completed their stunning final pieces inspired by Frida Kahlo’s painting The Dream (The Bed). Building on our earlier explorations of the themes of life and death, the children have shown great maturity and creativity in their work. Over the past few weeks, they have experimented with a range of media – including charcoal, pastels, watercolours and pencil – to develop their skills and techniques. Their final pieces, completed this week, are powerful, imaginative, and beautifully personal reflections on the ideas we discussed. We are so proud of the effort and thought that has gone into each artwork!
