George Spicer newsletter - Thursday 1st July 2021

Covid update - Please remember if your child has any covid symptoms that you must keep them at home and do a PCR test. Remember to continue to wear masks on the school sites and to socially distance.

School Streets update - ceasing from September 2021

We are giving notice that from September 2021, School Streets will not be continuing next term.  We are limited by the size of the street and number of roads that need to be covered; the lack of people resources; limited support from the council and more frequently our staff and volunteers are receiving abuse from angry and upset drivers, sometimes even our parents.

We ask that you remind your children now that they will need to be aware of their safety on and around Sketty Road areas in preparation for next term. This is not a decision that we've taken lightly and for the majority, it's been a successful project. Thank you to all those who have supported us.

If you think you may be entitled to Free School Meals, please email completed FSM forms (sent by email to all families on 29th June) to freeschoolmeals@enfield.gov.uk.

We will be sending a survey link shortly asking about your meal choice for September. Please remember that any changes from packed lunches to school dinners can only be made half termly in writing.

Reception Class

This week Reception planted some sunflower seeds outside the playground, with Mrs Burniston. We talked all about what seeds need to grow and carefully considered the prime position for them to be planted. After much discussion, we decided that against the fence would be good as they can grow up the fence and be seen through the gates, both by Reception and passers by on Kimberley Gardens.

Keep an eye out for them, we hope that they will grow really tall!

Year 1

In Year 1, we have been weather reporters this week! We have studied the changes in the weather in the UK and have presented our reports. We have challenged ourselves to extend our vocabulary in our written reports, talking about the temperature and the differences between the North and the South of the UK. Joshua in Elm says "Make sure you pack your sun cream as there will be sunny spells in London."

Year 2

This week in Year 2, we have been writing a non- chronological report all about a woolly mammoth. We created sub-headings to organise all the interesting information have found and tried to use technical vocabulary to be scientific. We have loved learning more about extinct animals and sharing all of our prior knowledge!

Sketty Road visit

Today, 1st July, Year 2 visited Sketty Road.  They had an opportunity to spend time in the Sensory Garden and they also had time with Year 4 Ambassadors asking questions about life in Sketty Road.

They are extremely excited about being in Year 3 and looking forward to September.

A huge thank you to the Year 4 Ambassadors who did a great job answering questions and explaining everything so clearly to Year 2.  Well done to Caroline, Deborah, Andy, Dillon T, Indigo, Edea, Alex and Dina.  They spoke clearly, confidently and reassured the Year 2s that Sketty Road and Year 3 is an amazing place.

Year 3

This week Year 3 enjoyed creating a thought tunnel to persuade the senate to ban Gladiator fights. Every child had the opportunity to share their opinion and practise using persuasive language.

Year 4

This week, Year 4 have been making collages in PSHE, thinking about people who are important to them.

Miss. Foster’s ultra focused reading group looking at our current text ‘Black Powder’.

This week in maths we have been looking at geometry. We organised angles into obtuse, actuate and right-angled.

Year 5

Well done to all of our green fingered year 5s, who have been taking care of our potato and sunflower plants. We started growing our potatoes in small pots from the tubers that we cut from potatoes. Once they started to sprout, we replanted them into potato bags and with lots of watering and sunshine look how they have grown! Hopefully our sunflower shoots will be just as successful.

Below are Coco , Eyja , Elias , Olivia and Julia from Thoth class and Aurora and Adam from Ra class.

Bikeability

Last week, the children in year 5 had some cycle training. The children developed their confidence when riding their bikes in the playground first, before transferring these skills and riding on the road. All of the children enjoyed the training and gained new cycling confidence! Hopefully they get lots of time to practise now that the weather is warming up and the summer holidays are looming!

Year 6

This week, as part of our transition topic,  Year 6 have been completing a book study on the poem The Highwayman. We read the poem together and evaluated different aspects, using our inference skills to think about why the characters behaved in certain ways. We also enjoyed listening to Fleetwood Mac to help us to understand the poem better!

Miss Grant’s Reading Challenge

Here are some children enjoying their favourite books from last week’s challenge!

Last week’s challenge was to read a favourite book, this week’s challenge is to try something new - Read a book by an author you have never read before! Send any photos of you reading your new author, you could even tell us what you liked about it, to primrose@georgespcier.enfield.sch.uk

Defiants - Gabriel - The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas - I like this book as it highlights racism, and it really gives the reader a perspective of how black people were treated in the past. My favourite character is Starr. She is the character that has seen racism with her very own eyes. She has experienced the death of her best friend, who was killed due to her skin colour. As you read on, this unravels in the book. I recommend this book to everyone, as this book delves deep into racism and the affects it has on young people
