George Spicer Newsletter - 26th September 2025

Marvellous Me - At George Spicer Primary School, we believe that strong partnerships between home and school help pupils thrive. That’s why we use the Marvellous Me app to keep you connected with your child’s learning journey every step of the way.

Why use Marvellous Me?

  • Celebrate Success: Receive instant updates when your child earns rewards or achieves milestones, helping you share in their pride and motivate them further.
  • Stay Informed: Get regular insights into your child’s progress, behaviour, and classroom activities, making it easier to support their learning at home.
  • Two-Way Engagement: The app encourages positive dialogue between parents and teachers, strengthening the home-school relationship.

Currently, 83% of our pupils have a linked parent account, which means about 1 in 5 families are missing out on these valuable updates and opportunities to engage with their child’s education.

This week Reception have been exploring the season of Autumn. We have been creating autumnal art work for our classroom displays and discussing what changes occur during the season of Autumn.

Oden “The leaves fall down”

Year 1

The children in Year 1 had a visitor this week. Cave Baby came and made a mess in the year 1 classrooms. The children were excited to learn about Cave Baby and all his paintings and created some of their own.

Year 2

This week in Year 2 we have been learning about the colourful Hindu festival Holi. Hindu's celebrate Holi by throwing powder paint and coloured water into the air. People enjoy dancing, singing and eating together as well as getting completely covered in paint. It is a joyous and fund celebration. Holi celebrates the love between two Hindu Gods and the colours symbolise different emotions and aspects of the story. The children enjoyed doing colourful chalk drawings but we tried not to get completely covered in chalk!

Year 3

In Reading, Year 3 have been exploring the book Fangs by Malorie Blackman.

Fangs - Scholastic Shop

We have been learning about the character Nathan and how he bought a spider behind his parent's backs.

We have been working on our skill of retrieval to answer comprehension questions based on the text and to learn more about the story. As well as this, we are beginning to use our inference skills as made guesses about what a character might be saying/thinking based on an image.

Year 4

We have thoroughly enjoyed getting to grips with all of our Autumn Term Curriculum Subjects, as we delve deeper into topics such as Alexander the Great in History and Climates and Biomes in Geography. We have immersed ourselves into the History topic by pretending to be 'Hoplites' (soldiers) whilst reenacting the 'Phalanx' (battle formation). We have also been absorbing plenty of knowledge about King Philip II of Macedon and how he learnt many useful battle strategies from the Ancient Greeks.

In PSHE we have explored a variety of scenarios, that have helped us to understand that our actions have consequences. We have given different characters advice on how best to be Honest, Trustworthy and Responsible citizens. It was a pleasure to witness so many of our pupils give such a mature and empathic response to some very sticky situations!

Stage 1 Report on United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (Incorporation) (Scotland) Bill | Scottish Parliament

We have also begun learning how to play a stringed instrument. With a little help from the Enfield Music Service, we have picked up our violins, violas and bows and taken the classical music world by storm. So far, we have learnt the different parts of the instrument, learnt how to pizzicato (pluck) different notes using the 4 strings and explored different playing volumes and pitches.  We look forward to serenading you soon!

Year 5

Year 5 have enjoyed learning more about Philippe Petit in Writing lessons, preparing to write a biography to celebrate his incredible accomplishments.

The children have also been exploring the Christian concept of forgiveness. They analysed a number of scenarios based on this theme, considering what the character should do based on Jesus’ teachings. Many felt that unlimited forgiveness would make a kinder, more empathetic world. However, others argued that people would not learn from their mistakes and would continue to make poor judgements if there were no consequences.

Year 6

This term, Year 6 have been immersing themselves in the world of Frida Kahlo, focusing on her iconic painting The Dream (The Bed). The children have been developing their own ideas inspired by Kahlo’s exploration of life and death, and are thinking creatively about how to represent these themes in their own work.

They have been experimenting with different techniques, trying out new ways to express their ideas and bring their visions to life. It’s been wonderful to see their creativity grow and their confidence develop as they explore this challenging and thought-provoking subject.

The project is ongoing, and we’re excited to see how the children continue to refine their ideas and techniques throughout the term.

Parliament Assembly

On Monday 15th September, KS1 and KS2 children were fortunate to welcome a visitor from the UK Parliament into George Spicer. Damien Arness-Dalton, from the Education Team and within the UK Parliament, visited both Kimberley Gardens and Sketty Road to talk to the children about the UK Parliament and how they make decisions on behalf of the whole country. Damien shared how choices are made by MPs within the House of Commons. He asked for volunteers to become a mini-versions of the Prime Minister and his top-team and even managed to debate an issue with the children!

It was a great afternoon which inspired many children to think about becoming and MP in the future to make changes which will benefit the whole country.
