Reception

We have been exploring the artistic works of Frank Bowling as part of our Black History Month learning in Reception. We were inspired to experiment with brightly coloured paints and create our own abstract pieces of art. The children found it fascinating that Frank Bowlings art work is featured in galleries in London and they aspired to create their own works of art that could one day go in a gallery too! A child in Daffodil said “I went to the Tate gallery in Liverpool and I remember seeing art work like this” another child added “I can’t believe we are painting like true artists!”

The children experimented with different techniques in the style of Frank Bowling. They worked collaboratively to create texture by using their paintbrushes in a range of different ways such as splattering which involves flicking the paint onto their watercolour artwork.

The Reception children have been busy going on adventures which they have enjoyed sharing with their class this week. Many children excitedly handed in their 'All About Me' Book where they had drawn pictures, stuck in photographs and even written some labels to help explain what they had done and where they had been over the weekend. We have enjoyed asking questions to find out more information and it has given the teachers some good ideas for places to visit in the half term holiday! F in Daffodil class told us about his football class, "I scored 6 goals!"  S went on an exciting trip to Hertfordshire Zoo, "I had fun with my Daddy looking at the dinosaurs." Finally, R told us all about his visit to the new soft play centre in Enfield Town, "The bouncy castle was so much fun!".  The teachers can't wait to hear more stories about all your exciting activities and special times with your families.

Year 1

This week, the children in Year 1 have been comparing and exploring different types of toys during English. Following on from our book ‘Naughty Bus’, the children  have been learning about information books and how they can plan their own about toys. For this, we have used toys within our classes and the toys the children have brought in from home.

The children have said “Some toys are able to move but some are not”, “All of our toys are easy to play with”, “Some of our toys are made of wood and some are made from plastic”.

Year 2

Year 2 had a fantastic trip to Capel Manor! Our topic in Science is Habitats. We learnt all about the different habitats at Capel Manor. We explored a forest habitat, a desert habitat with huge cacti and learnt about different creatures around the pond. In Science we created food chains based on the animals we had seen at the zoo! For Mental health week we looked into the emotion 'disappointment' and how to tackle it - N said 'I'd be disappointed if I missed something if I was ill' and I said 'I would be disappointed if my club was cancelled.'

Year 2 have enjoyed their Reading workshop this week where we read a Minibeast Poems. Here are some responses from parents and children.

"Excellent workshop very informative."

"More workshops please"

"Great to see the kids in action"

"I loved it because it was really nice to see my mum and I love reading."

"I enjoyed it because my mum was reading to me."

Year 3

In Writing, Year 3 have been working hard on exploring different characters and what their actions and decisions tell you about them.

They have also been intrigued by their history lessons when learning about how the Ancient Egyptians prepared and preserved a dead body by the process called embalmment or mummification.  If you ask them, they will be able to tell you why their bodies had to be preserved and what canonic jars were used for.

Year 4

This week in History we explored how Ancient Egyptians wrote. We found out that in their writing, the ancient Egyptians used pictures and symbols. Each picture or symbol is called a hieroglyph. The ancient Egyptian writing is called hieroglyphics. Some hieroglyphs are carved into a cartouche.

Where hieroglyphs are found in a cartouche, they normally spell a special name of a god or a pharaoh.

This cartouche says Tutankhamun.

After we learnt about the Rosetta Stone. This was discovered by soldiers. It contained three sections: lots of Egyptian hieroglyphs, a language called Demotic and Greek.

We practised using hieroglyphics to write Egypt, Nile and our name. It was fun exploring and using the hieroglyphics to write different names.

Year 5

As promised, I have to update you on our final clay gargoyle sculptures. As you can see from the images, the children really focused on the 'smoothing' and 'finishing' skill for their final work of art. In these examples, you can see that the pupils used different tools to 'finish' off their sculptures, by scratching in textual features such as facial hair and veins (in the eyes).

We are tremendously proud of the children and how they have created such wonderfully grotesque models, that would not look out of place at a gothic cemetery. We look forward to seeing what exciting pieces of art they produce in our next topic inspired by the life and times of Henry VIII.

Year 6

This week was the Year 6 residential trip to Kingswood Activity Centre. It was an incredible week, filled with all sorts of activities from abseiling to buggy building, discos to fire lighting! The children (and adults!) had a great time and built new friendships and learnt new skills that'll support them in later life.

For those remaining in school, Year 6 have had a fantastic week. We enjoyed our session in Air Hop where the level of acrobatics was at times both breathtaking and terrifying  in equal measure! The children very much enjoyed their opportunity to develop their life skills with some baking and have shown their creativity through their application of pointillism in art.  So far, the highlight has been our visit to the Science Museum where we were able to explore and experiment freely with a variety of scientific concepts.

Girl's Football Match

Well done to the Girl's Football Team who fought with pride, commitment and determination in what were three really tricky matches against some stiff opposition. The team was made up of Year 4 and Year 5 girls, who for the majority,  this was their first competitive outing. You can be proud of your performance, showing strong teamwork and support for one another in all three matches. Roll on next Tuesday, for another set of matches.
