George Spicer Newsletter - 19th July 2024

There we have it, 190 school days done – time flies when you are having fun!!  Hopefully your children have had many, many enjoyable moments throughout the year, as I have sat trying to write this there have been so many for me as Headteacher.  As well as the learning within the classroom there have been all the extra visits and trips that bring so many smiles.  Sitting in the dining rooms this week I have asked the children how they have done with the challenge I set for them all at the start of the year – to be their best self and I have loved hearing all the answers.  The final week of term is always busy as I become Mr Kipling with all my Tea Parties, again hearing of all the positive reasons they were nominated for stars of the week.

This week is also emotional as we bid farewell to our Year 6s as we send them on their way to their various schools ready for their next chapter.  We also wish those children in other year groups, who are leaving all the very best in their new schools.  Remember to spread Spicer Spirit wherever you are.  This year we are also saying goodbye to a number of staff and I’m sure you will join me in thanking them for all their efforts and good luck with whatever they are doing next.

In my final assembly today I announced the new House Captains both in Year 6 and for the first time in Year 2, lots of exciting plans for House events and ways to gain house points which we will go into greater detail with next term.  I did set the children a Summer Holiday challenge based on my most favourite of the school values and that is to be kind as much as possible and whenever possible during the holidays, hopefully that helps for the next 57 days because tag you’re it!  Have a wonderful Summer.

Reception

The children in Reception went to visit their new teachers on Wednesday afternoon. They had a lovely time getting to know all of the adults that will be working with them in Year 1. They had the opportunity to ask questions, share information about themselves and play with the new toys. They all came back to Reception with big smiles on their faces and were excited to tell us all about their new classrooms!

We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for all your support this year. We have thoroughly enjoyed teaching all your lovely children and wish them lots of luck for next year!

Year 1

Year 1 had a wonderful experience visiting the beach at Walton-on-the Naze. We were blessed with the most favourable weather - clear skies, gentle breeze, and just the right amount of sunshine to make it an enjoyable day for everyone. The long coach journey was definitely worth it, as we arrived at the seaside full of excitement and ready for a day of fun and exploration.  The children had a fantastic time playing in the sand, building sandcastles, and even dipping their toes in the sea. It was truly a memorable day that I am sure they will treasure for a long time.

Year 2

In our final week of Year 2, the children have enjoyed letting their creative sides shine finishing off their Binca sewing and recreating some of Monet's artwork. The teachers have been very impressed with the children's development of their sewing skills, with each child sewing a border and their initials onto their bookmark. In Art, we have looked at the use of light and shadow in Claude Monet's work and used watercolours to have a go ourselves. We want to wish the children a happy summer and the best wishes for Year 3!

Year 2 have also enjoyed some PE and games at the playing fields as a special treat. We played stuck in the mud, the bean bag grab and lots of other fun physical activities. The children really enjoyed themselves.

As we prepare for the children for Year 3, we want to thank all of the parents for their support this year. We have loved teaching your children and wish them all the best for their new journey at Sketty Road.

We hope that you all have a lovely summer! Be safe and have fun!

Year 3

Year 3 have had an eventful and busy week. They enjoyed their final PE lesson where they got to revisit the skills they have learnt throughout the year and apply it to a number sport games - one of their favourites being football of course. Some of the children also took time out to share what they would miss most about being in Year 3. They said the following:

‘The wonderful trips we went on.’

‘The art work we produced.’

‘Spending time with our Y3 teachers’

However, they all agreed that they would look forward to no longer being the youngest in the school building!

Year 4

In Science this week, Year 4 learnt about the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010, one of the worst oil disasters in history. We learnt that when there is an oil spill out at sea, animals such as sea birds get covered in oil which is very hard to remove from their feathers. When marine birds and mammals are covered in oil, they may get hypothermia (being too cold) because their fur or feathers cannot protect them from the weather. This was very sad to hear. We then took part in an experiment on how to remove oil from a feather. We planned a comparative test enquiry to compare methods. We tried:

●      scraping oil off the feather

●      blotting oil off the feather using different materials such as pieces of fabric or paper towels

●      using detergent to wash the feather.

We found that using detergent took away most of the oil. It was a fun experiment but we hope there are no more oil disasters in our beautiful seas.

Year 5

This week Year 5 have been finishing off art and topic projects. The children have been learning some different printing techniques to create a stunning print of the Egyptian god Isis. The children learnt how to create a 2 layer relief print using polystyrene tiles to create the first wing. This wing used a positive and negative print technique to create a two-tone print. The second wing was created using a different printing technique  - mono printing, where ink is applied and marks made on the reverse to create the mono print. The children then used gold foil to create Isis’ skirt with an embossed pattern. They combined many techniques and learnt lots of new skills. The teachers are really pleased with the end result.

Finally, this week the children have had the opportunity to meet their new year 6 teachers and say goodbye to their current Year 5 teachers. It has been an emotional week with some sad goodbyes. The Year 5 teachers and staff have loved teaching this year group and we are sure they will have many great successes in Year 6. We wish them all the best.

Year 6

Goodbye Year 6

And so the time has come, the end of this year's cohort primary school journey. It has been a year full of memories and the whole of the George Spicer Community wish them the best of luck as they embark on their next stage of their educational journey.

The Year 6 team are beyond proud of the hard-work and dedication they have shown this year. There have been lots of laughter, happy faces and some tears this past year. We are sure there will be many lessons learnt which will help them in their next stage and memories to treasure. It’s a mix of emotions leaving behind somewhere you have been for so long. Whether you joined as a bright-eyed 5 year old or you blessed Spicer with your presence a little later, this year wouldn’t have been the same without you!

We will miss you!
