George Spicer Newsletter -12th July 2024

Sky Blue Monday

On Monday we will be having our wear sky blue day – this will be a non-uniform day but with a blue requirement.  Donations will be accepted on the day and all monies gifted will go to the Ruth Strauss Foundation, please click on the link to see what vital work they do.  I myself lost my own Dad at 15 years old, after seeing him suffer and battle cancer when he was first diagnosed when I was just 11.  Experiencing this from such a young age has had a profound effect on every part of my life and I can tell you that the work this unbelievable charity does will make such a positive difference.  I know the family in our school have all felt incredibly supported and are very grateful for any money we can raise.

 Thank you from FoGs

Thank you to the whole school community for coming together for another successful Summer Fun Day.
Thank you to all those parents and staff who volunteered to run stalls. It was a really lovely day and we couldn’t do it without your support.

And thank you to everyone who came and enjoyed themselves. With your help we raised a grand total of £5,000!! Which will go towards funding a new PA system for the school.

Finally a big thanks goes to the FoGS team who worked super hard over the past few weeks to get everything organised for the fair.

Look out for our FoGs end of year newsletter for more info and upcoming events for next year."

Reception

Reception had a fantastic time during our Sports Day on Wednesday. The children worked as a team to compete in a variety of activities, showing the development in their physical abilities over the course of this year. The children were very proud to show their families their sporting skills!

Football fever has hit Reception this week after England's success on Saturday evening at the  European Football tournament! The children have been practising their penalties in Poppy class, playing table football in Daffodil class and have even created their own kits in Snowdrop class. Everyone has worked hard to write some super sentences about the exciting match last Saturday and the national team have inspired a next generation of football superstars! "I really want to be a footballer when I grow up," exclaimed A, R and K in Daffodil class.

Year 1

The Year 1 Sports Day was a fantastic event! Children had a great time participating in all sorts of fun activities like javelin throwing, hurdles and balancing quoits.  The traditional activities like egg and spoon race and bean bag toss also brought back special memories for many.  Parents were invited to join in the fun too, cheering on their little ones and some even taking part in a game themselves. Thankfully, the weather was favourable, adding to the excitement of the day. It was wonderful to see the children's smiling faces as they ran, jumped, and laughed together. Everyone enjoyed the healthy competition and sense of teamwork. Well done to all the children for their fantastic efforts and a big thank you to all the parents for their enthusiastic participation!

Year 2

As the year is almost coming to an end year 2 have been doing some transitions to Sketty Road ( KS2 site). They have been enjoying being in the new building and learning how to use word in the computing lab. They have also enjoyed some time playing in the Key stage 2 playground.  Although a big transition and some a little nervous, everyone in year 2 is quite excited and ready to start year 3! Year 2 have also been wrapping up their history lessons by learning about the Bronze Age. They have learnt that people started to build homes, make artefacts and jewellery. They learnt that the beaker people made beakers to preserve their food. Year 2 had some fun designing their own beakers and writing about why they like learning about the Bronze Age!

Year 3

Year 3 have been exploring a range of prehistoric art work and have been creating replicas of - The Stone of Hands pre historic art work. Some of the children decided to stick closely to the original piece with their designs and others decided to incorporate a variety of colours to give it modern look.

Year 4

In Science, our BIG question was How can we prevent microplastics from getting into our oceans?

We explored how different materials (felt and canvas) can be used as filters to prevent micro plastics (represented by the sand) from passing through and entering into our seas and oceans. This will help to protect wildlife from harmful plastic pollution. We really enjoyed exploring and testing different materials to find out which would act as a more effective filter.  We found out that the felt allowed the water to go though, leaving the sand on top. This showed that felt is a good filter. Additionally, we learnt about the importance of protecting our environment from micro plastics as it can affect animals and their food chain which can also affect us.

Year 5

This week, year 5 have had a busy week finishing off bits of the curriculum, tying up loose ends and getting ready for year 6. On Wednesday and Thursday, the classes visited Kingsmead school for an art workshop. Year 5 visited their art studio and learnt about the art of Antony Gormley a famous British Sculptor. The children looked at his artwork Field, a collaborative artwork consisting of thousands of individual clay figures made by communities all around the world. Year 5 made their own versions of the figures from red clay. Their work will be fired in the kiln at Kingsmead and will be on display at Kingsmead for open day in September.  Thursday also saw several year 5 children put themselves forward as captains for their house colour team next year. Pupils from years 3, 4 and 5 all gathered together in their house colours to listen to the children in year 5 give their speeches. All children had the opportunity to vote. The votes will be counted and winners announced next week.

Year 6

Shrek - Spicer Style

Year 6 have worked tirelessly to perform their year 6 performances. Since the beginning of this half term they have been learning lines, learning choreography, designing posters and tickets. They have worked incredibly hard and I’m sure those that have seen the show can see their dedication to their final primary school performance.

Congratulations Year 6!
