George Spicer newsletter - 3rd March 2023

Parent Consultation Day - Friday 24th March 2023  - Our Spring Term Parent Consultation Day will be held on Friday 24th March 8.30am-6pm. This is a designated INSET day, meaning that your child will only attend school for their learning review meeting.

Appointments will be available from 6pm Wednesday 1st March via School Cloud.

If you have children on both sites, please ensure you leave a minimum of a 30 minute gap between the appointments you book in order to give you time to walk between the sites.

Lateness:

Punctuality - The school gates open at 8.45am for a soft start to support a calm arrival to school. All our pupils are expected to be in class for registration by 09:00 am. The school gates are then locked at this point.  Pupils need to be in school by 09:00 am for registration. If your child arrives after 09:00 am, they will receive a late mark (L). If your child arrives after 09:10 am, they will receive a 'U' code (missed session) on their registration certificate which will impact on their overall attendance percentage.

Absences - must be reported in writing by email or by phone by 9am daily. Please leave a brief message with your child's name, class and the reason for their absence.  It will be recorded as unauthorised if you do not leave a reason or say your child is 'unwell'.

Reception Class

We are still investigating who could of made the mess in our playground. Some of the suggestions were, 'A cheeky astronaut,' thought Vincent. Some children said it could of been aliens, a lot like the ones we see when we learn about pseudowords in our ELS lessons. Asher is sure an alien threw a rocket into our playground and Lloyd is convinced it was a meteor. The plot thickens!! We'll let you know if we get to the bottom of this.

We also started our parent reading sessions on Friday Morning. The classrooms were full of children reading with their adults. Thanks you so much for attending and we are hoping that this will continue to the end of the year.

Year 1

Before comparing the Stone Age and the Iron Age, Year 1 completed a quick cops and robbers' activity to activate prior knowledge - recalling all the facts that they can remember, then sharing their ideas with others on their table and 'robbing' any information that they may have forgotten.

Year 1 then looked at the similarities and difference from the Stone Age and the Iron Age.  They looked at different sources then sorted them into two groups. Later on in the week, they created a Venn diagram where they had to think carefully about whether it was something that was in both periods of time, or only within one time period.  In Writing they wrote a comparison text where they focused on using the conjunction 'but' to compare different features of the Stone and Iron Age.

Year 2

A massive thanks to all that attended our Maths workshops this week. The feedback has been very positive and it was lovely to see pupils enjoying the opportunity to share their learning with their families.

World Book Day has been a great success, with pupils dressed in costumes from a wide variety of books. Thanks again to all the adults at home that helped to make this such a special event - the children looked amazing!

Year 3

In Writing this week, Year 3 have been learning how to write an effective short story. We discussed what makes an effective story and the features such as the themes, characters and writing devices that draw us in.  The children, after hearing 4 short stories written by their teachers, were tasked with planning their own 100-word story, set around the theme 3 (three). Year 3 were given a story map with thought provoking questions to help structure their stories.

Next, the children turned their story plans into comic strips. They arranged their stories into six key parts, before adding drawings and speech. Their comic strips will assist them in writing their 100-word stories in the next lesson.

Year 4

This term we are learning how to play tennis. During this week the children were working on their ready position, forehand and backhand positions. Also they worked with partners to practise and improve their ball control skills.

The pupils are thoroughly enjoying learning this sport and we look forward to see them progress their skills.

Year 5

This week in English, we set the children a challenge - to capture Cromwell’s mood on the morning of his execution in no more than 100 words. We explored how Cromwell had written many letter to Henry, trying to persuade him of his innocence and encouraging him to change his mind. They children had to decide whether Cromwell, who knew of the King’s capricious nature, was still hopeful or had accepted his fate. As usual, this brilliant bunch did not disappoint. They produced some fantastic snapshots of that fateful morning, explaining what happened and making Cromwell’s feelings clear.

Ra and Osiris class have really been enjoying their swimming sessions.  They have been receiving high praise from the instructors for their efforts. Even though the cold weather on the way back left them feeling chilly, they all had broad smiles on their faces.

In PSHE, we explored some of the risks associated with misusing alcohol, including anti-social behaviour. Whilst in RE, the children began their learning about Pesach (Passover) in the Jewish faith.

Year 6

Science – Acquired and Inherited Characteristics

The Year 6 have previously looked at evolution in their Science topic and this week we have investigated the differences between acquired and inherited characteristics.

Rolling your tongue, hair colour and eye colour are all examples of inherited characteristics, whereas whether you have scars or whether you can ride a bike are examples of acquired characteristics. We looked at our own acquired and inherited characteristics and noted these down. Then, with a partner, we compared and contrasted our list and recorded our results in a Venn diagram. Some of the pupils were able to roll their tongues and had fun showing this. Have you got this inherited characteristic?
