Reception Class

We have loved exploring all things growing this week and will be working with this theme for the remainder of the half term. Our core book this week is 'Jasper's Beanstalk'. We read the story together and discussed what Jasper had done each day of the week. Reggie said 'On Saturday, he cut it down! That was silly!' Betty said 'Jasper took the slugs away so they wouldn't eat his beanstalk'. We then acted out the story too and wrote about it. In our continuous provision, we have been experimenting with soils, seeds and planting. The children have loved exploring the natural world and we are looking forward to learning more about our topic this term.

Year 1

Children are continuing to enjoy their ‘We love Enfield’ topic. This week, we have been discussing what we like about living in Enfield. We have been busy recreating Enfield Town in our role play areas.

Some quotes from the children:

Nathaly stated ‘I love to go swimming in Enfield.’

Demir “I like the cinema and the town market.’

Jaffa stated ‘I like the golden post box and cash machine.’

Joyce stated ‘I love Tesco and McDonalds.’

In Geography, we have been learning about towns and why Enfield is a town. Did you know that Enfield is a town because it has many shops, facilities and places of worship? We are having lots of fun leaning all of these facts!

We think Enfield is a terrific town!

Year 2

In Year 2 this week we have continued our ‘Down Under’ topic by looking at a traditional aboriginal tale – Tiddalik the Frog, which we have enjoyed retelling ourselves in our Writing sessions.

In Art, we have been looking at some of the techniques used in aboriginal art, particularly the use of dot paintings. Did you know that they used symbols in their paintings as a way of communicating?

We mixed all the colours to recreate this piece of art using just the primary colours and used the dot painting technique.

Year 3

Museum of London

Year 3 enjoyed a brilliant trip to the Museum of London on Wednesday where we explored lots of different exhibits and saw lots of interesting things linked to London throughout history. The children enjoyed looking at the artefacts and reading all about them.

Melissa - 'We are learning lots from these primary sources!'

English - Life as a Gladiator

In English and History, we have been learning what life was like as a gladiator by inferring information from primary and secondary sources. We then sorted some additional information into the subheadings that we will be using in our writing and made a TV documentary to practise saying the vocabulary and information.

Year 4

In Geography this week, we have been identifying and locating countries in the continent Europe. We really enjoyed our lesson this week, where we had the chance to explore the local community around us by using Digimaps and Google Maps, trying to locate our school on the map!

We used Atlases to identify different countries in Europe and had discussions about countries that we have visited in Europe and countries that we may originate from.

In PSHE we are continuing our Relationships topic and have been looking at Friendship this week. In our lesson we had discussions about the qualities of a good friend, why and how some friendships may end and healthy ways to solve disagreements within in a friendship. We spoke about how we strive to be good friends and how best to communicate in a friendship and trusted adults to speak to when we may have concerns.

Year 5

PSHE: Relationships and Safety Online

This week in Year 5, as part of our new PSHE topic on Relationships, we looked at how to stay safe on an online community. We discussed that belonging to an online community can have positive and negative consequences. We discussed how we would recognise if an online community feels unsafe or uncomfortable. We read statements and worked with our partner to discuss whether they were safe, not safe or if we were unsure. For example, we suggested texting a happy emoji to your friend was safe, whereas posting your phone number online was unsafe and could have serious repercussions.

The lesson also allowed us to talk about values of respect and responsibility, as we discussed how it is our right to have Access to Information (Article 13) and we must also be responsible when being online be safe. We also discussed the positive and negatives about online communities: that they can support our learning about a range of topics but can also lead to cyber-bullying. In pairs, we took turns to answer quiz questions as a group. This allowed us the opportunity to share our opinions and ideas, linking to Article 12 (Respect for Children's Views). One child said, "We can have apps like Instagram, Snap chat and Tik tok as long as we are sensible and responsible. My mum monitors and helps me with the privacy settings." Mason said, "It is important that games have age limits as they can have inappropriate and gruesome images this can affect a person's mental health and can cause distress."

Year 6

PE – Tennis skills

In PE we have been focusing on developing our Tennis skills. In the previous weeks leading up to this week’s lesson, we worked on using our forehand swing to return the ball. This week was all about developing the backhand. We broke down the backhand into 5 main points;

  1. Stance
  2. Grip
  3. Shape of the shot
  4. Contact point
  5. Follow through

After we practised these points by ourselves, we partnered up and had a go at having a rally using only the backhand to return the ball. Below are a few pictures of some pupils putting their backhand tennis skills into practise.
