Felix Project supports George Spicer families

Every Wednesday, we receive a delivery of food from The Felix Project. They are a charity that receives surplus food from supermarkets, restaurants and food suppliers that will otherwise be thrown away. The food is often close to its use by date, close to or past its best before date or often just no longer wanted. Use by dates indicate when a product may no longer be safe to eat. You should not eat, cook, or freeze it after the date displayed, even if it looks or smells fine. Best before dates are an indication of quality rather than safety. You can still eat food after its best before date, but its flavour and texture is most likely not as good as before the date.

The food is put out on both sites every Wednesday afternoon and is completely free.

At the Sketty Road site you will find it in the small playground opposite the office.

At the Kimberley Gardens site you will find it under the canopy in the year 1 and 2 playground. The food is available when the gates open at the end of the day but if you feel you would benefit from early access to this food, please contact the school office. You do not need to contact the office if you have previously arranged this.

Please be considerate of others and only take food from one site.

Reception Class

Reception have settled in very well and are enjoying their time exploring the environment. They are trying their best and making friends while learning the rules and routines.

Year 1

In English, Year 1 have been comparing steam trains to modern trains. They have been working extremely hard and have focused on their finger spaces, capital letters and full stops. They have learnt so many interesting facts about trains. Did you know that a steam train has a chimney?  If you see a Year 1 child, ask them to tell you all about their learning. I am sure they are super excited to share their knowledge!

Year 2 - Computing

Using Scratch Junior on IPad

The children first ‘tinkered’ with the buttons to discover for themselves what each one did.  The children found out how to direct their character in one direction at a time and change the background.   Next they focused on animation: To do this they thought about and explained how a fly moves.  They were learning how to create two movements at a time and ‘loop’ these. They tested this with other animals.

During the final lesson, the children chose an instrument to draw and design.  Then the children learnt how to add sound to their animation, they recorded what they thought the instrument sounded like and added movements.  This made it look like they were playing.

Year 3

This week in art, we have been expanding our artistic skills by learning how to draw the proportions of a face. We started off by looking at ourselves in the mirror and discussing the different features we all have. From there, we looked at half a portrait of Picasso and we drew the other half free hand. We then however used our new skills to map out the proportions of the face and we were so happy to see such a big improvement! By carefully using a ruler we could draw lines that meant our features could be drawn in exactly the right place.

Year 4

This week in year 4 we have had an action-packed week filled with lots of fun learning.

We had our first strings lesson where we started learning how to play the Viola and had an incredible time.

In Science this week, we identified the key parts of a circuit and had the opportunity to construct our own circuits for Miss Williams to enjoy a story before bedtime.

Year 5

This week in Year 5, we have been delving deeper into our topic of Daedalus and Icarus! We began by looking at the abstract artist Henri Matisse and his striking piece, Icarus. (1947). We discussed in small groups the theme of the painting and considered the choice of materials he used and the colours and shapes he incorporated. We also questioned, why did Matisse chose to use such bright colours to depict such a tragic tale? We look forward to completing an artistic appraisal in the coming weeks!

In our writing lessons this week and inspired by the story of Icarus, we wrote our own modern-day interpretations of Icarus, considering the morale of the story. We decided the message of the story, being overconfident and pushing yourself beyond your means is bound to end in failure, is something we all can learn from.

Year 6

This week, as a part of our Macbeth writing, the children in Year 6 had a drama lesson. The children acted out the dialogue between Macbeth, Banquo and the witches in small groups, paying particular attention to their tone of voice and their body language. At the end of this lesson, the children performed to their class, displaying their wonderful acting skills.

This Drama lesson led to an English lesson, where the children created some fantastic pieces of writing inspired from their acting.
