Road Safety Week

This week has been Road Safety Week with the theme: Be Safe on the Street.

In lessons, the children have been learning about how to keep safe on the roads in our local area.  This links to our Article of the Month – UNCRC Article 6: The right to life, survival and development.

Our amazing School Ambassadors also delivered an assembly at their school site.  They all spoke clearly and confidently, telling the children ways to be safe travelling to and from school;

  • Use active travel to get to school to keep Sketty Road clear of cars.
  • Wear a helmet when scootering or cycling
  • Wear hi-vis or reflective clothing or accessories to make sure you are seen clearly
  • Wear a seat belt in the car with a booster seat if you are shorter than 135cm
  • Stay with your adult and hold their hand when crossing the road.

Why not discuss as a family what you can all do to Be Safe on the Street?

Last week a group of School Ambassadors and their families were filmed by Enfield Council.  The film will be used to promote School Streets across the borough and George Spicers is proud to participate in spreading the positive message.  A big thank you to all the children and their families who participated.

Reception

This week in Reception we have been learning the concept of “one more.” The children explored how adding just one to a number, changes the total and practised using different resources and activities to help build their understanding. We used a range of hands-on materials and practical experiences, including five frames to show the greater amount and outside jumping along number lines. Well done Reception!

Year 1

This week in RW, Year 1 have been looking at how to be a good Samaritan. The children explored the parable of 'love thy neighbour’ and then went on to think about behaviours that were kind and unkind. It was lovely to see that they had such a good understanding of how to treat people kindly, which also links with one of our 4 B’s.

Year 2

The children were great Ambassadors of George Spicer being very respectful during the journeys and whilst in the Synagogue. They were able to get a close look at a 200 year old Torah which is made from cow skins. When it is fully rolled out it would be the same length as a basket ball court and would take the skins of 68 cows to make. Some pupils were asked to carefully remove the silver ornaments that decorate the Torah while it is kept safely in the Arc (cabinet). Overall this was a lovely trip and the children made their adults very proud.

Year 3

Year 3 – Light investigation and Road Safety

This week, Year 3 has embarked on an investigation into the properties of light and its interaction with materials. The Year 3s explored how some materials reflect light better than others, enhancing our understanding of light’s behaviour. This knowledge is crucial for road safety, as recognising reflective materials helps us to stay visible while navigating roadways. The enquiry has fostered scientific curiosity and highlighted the importance of safety in our everyday lives.

Year 4

This fortnight has been another highly rewarding but busy few weeks in Year 4. We have enjoyed watching and participating in a Taekwondo demonstration. We have also listened intently and learnt about road safety this week. We are thoroughly grateful to our Class Ambassadors for delivering such an informative and engaging assembly!

This fortnight we opened our doors to parents and carers, to attend our annual Maths Workshop. It was a delight to see so many parents attend and give you the opportunity to understand more about how we teach and deliver Maths lessons at George Spicer. It was a pleasure to see the children beaming with pride and so eager to share their knowledge and skills with you!

Lastly, some children from Year 4 were lucky enough to visit the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. We were shown around by expert tour guides – Lee and Amber, who made us feel incredibly welcome. We visited the home and away dressing rooms, had photos taken with the UEFA Europa Cup and went pitch-side to soak up the atmosphere and imagine the place bouncing with 60,000 spectators. Did you know that the stadium cost a staggering 1.2 billion to build?

Year 5

As part of Road Safety Week, Year 5 explored how their responsibilities on the road have evolved as they’ve grown older, and how these will continue to change as they mature. To deepen their understanding, pupils discussed potential hazards they might encounter on their journey to school and considered practical ways to prevent injuries and stay safe.

In Writing, Year 5 have continued their work inspired by Robot Girl by Malorie Blackman. Pupils took part in role-play activities to help them understand how characters might speak and behave during conversations. This supported them in crafting effective narrative dialogue, using a wide range of synonyms for ‘said’, adverbs to show emotion, and correctly punctuated speech.

Year 6

This term in our writing unit, we have started exploring the picture book The Promise by Nicola Davies. The story follows a young girl who keeps a promise, transforming a broken and ugly town into a place full of life and beauty. The children have engaged really well with the story and have been producing some beautiful writing. There’s plenty more creativity to come in the coming weeks!

In Geography, we have been studying the topographical features of Mongolia. The children have been using atlases and a variety of maps to identify mountains, rivers, deserts, and other key features. They have practised important skills such as map reading, using symbols, creating a key, and accurately plotting locations. Each child has produced a careful and detailed map of Mongolia, which will be pictured in the newsletter, showing their understanding and attention to detail. One interesting fact they discovered is that the Gobi Desert can be extremely cold, with winter temperatures dropping as low as -40°C, despite being a desert.

Year 6 - London Youth Games

Last week, some members of Year 6 were chosen to represent the school in the Sports Hall Athletics competition with the prospect of potentially taking part in the London Youth Games.

This was the first time that we had taken part in the event and to say that we were all a little anxious is an understatement. This competition is taken very seriously by the schools that enter and a substantial amount of preparation and training is dedicated in the build-up.

Despite not having any time to train for the events, I can proudly say that the team won their heat and performed incredibly well. The level of determination and resilience was amazing and showed such an amazing strength of character.

From this stage, we will have to wait for the results of the other heats to see whether we qualify for the London Youth Games. Either way, huge congratulations to the team! Well done!
