Important Safeguarding Notice: Children’s “Spy” Books

We want to make you aware of a recent issue affecting some popular children’s books by Andrew Cope, including the Spy Dogs, Spy Cats, and Spy Pups series.

Some editions of these books include a printed web address at the back. This link used to go to the author’s website, but the domain is no longer under his control. It has since been taken over by another party and now leads to inappropriate adult content.

The publisher, Puffin, has paused sales and distribution of the books and is working with schools, libraries, and retailers to remove copies from circulation. They have stressed that the website has no connection to the author or publisher.

What this means for you:

• If your child has any Spy Dog, Spy Cat or Spy Pups books at home, please check the back for website links and make sure they do not try to visit the site.

• It is safe for children to continue reading the stories themselves — the concern is only with the outdated link.

• We recommend talking with your child about the importance of not following web addresses in books without checking with an adult first.

We will continue to share updates from the publisher as more information becomes available.

Reception

Reception were very excited to go on an Autumn walk this week to explore the change in seasons. We collected a range of Autumnal items, exploring colours, sizes and shapes. We talked about textures and the different colours we observed as we made our pictures using the natural objects we collected.

Harriet “There are lots of different colours”

Kieran “The conkers were prickly”

Year 1

This week, Elm, Ash and Willow class had their Phonics Workshops. It was lovely to see so many parents and carers participating in the phonics activities and learning with their children. Oak Class look forward to welcoming their parents next week to join in with their lesson.

The children have had a great time in Science this week, learning how to make a mouse fly using a milk bottle. Child I said ‘the air coming out of the bottle when we squash it is what is making the mouse fly. A said ‘the big bottle has so much air’. B said the bigger milk bottle makes the mouse fly higher’.

Year 2

As part of our learning about Habitats this week Year 2 have been looking at Grassy Habitats to investigate the question - What Animals Live in the Grassy Habitat? After discussing our ideas and sharing what creatures and minibeasts we might find, we ventured into the meadow to explore. We ticked the animals (and plants) we observed and did observational drawings of one of them. We found lots of spiders - we could see some had caught smaller insects in their webs and we observed some even eating their prey! We then gave our favourite insect an address. We had a fun learning outside!

Year 3

Year 3 explored the fascinating world of fossils, investigating a variety of types and examining them closely. Using their observation skills, they compared similarities and differences between specimens. The students thoroughly enjoyed channelling their inner palaeontologists during this exciting, hands-on learning experience about Earth’s ancient past.

Year 4

In Year 4, we have been creating our own Teamwork Posters in PSHE. We have worked collaboratively in pairs, to produce a visually vibrant poster that promotes teamwork and working effectively towards a common goal. We used inspirational quotes to reinforce our message.

Our new writing topic began with some surprises...whilst we were outside playing at lunchtime, we were visited by the 'Secret Gardener' who left the Year 4 classes a letter pleading for their help. They also left some flowers and some plant seeds, for us to grow our own 'wilderness'. This was a word of warning and a desperate call for our assistance but do we trust this 'Secret Gardener' enough to carry out his orders?

The Varmints are here...

Last week we also enjoyed participating in an online Black History Month, Maths Workshop. We explored how mathematics is used to control computers. We played around with Binary Code and deciphered some code along the way. We were fascinated by the intricate work that goes into being a computer programmer and how it links to mathematics.

Year 5

Year 5 have been very busy over the last couple of weeks! In Art, we have been learning about Roman culture and how Romans used amphorae to transport food and drink. Soon, we will be making the vessels out of clay, but first we experimented with different clay techniques and practiced our engraving skills – it was fun but very messy!

Year 5 have also really enjoyed engaging in a range of maths activities as part of Black History Month. They have been honing their maths skills of being curious, resourceful, resilient and collaborative, just like Black, female mathematicians Katherine Johnson and Dorothy Vaughan.

Year 6

Last Friday morning, all four Year 6 classes took part in a 2km cross-country run on the Enfield playing fields. The children showed fantastic determination and teamwork as they encouraged one another around the course. It was wonderful to see everyone enjoying being active, spending time outdoors, and embracing a healthy challenge.

Josh summed up the spirit of the morning, saying, “It was really fun to challenge myself racing against my year group.” Many children went even further, challenging themselves to complete an extra lap - a brilliant display of perseverance and enthusiasm.

Events like this help our pupils feel more physically fit, more focused, and proud of their achievements – showing how enjoyable and rewarding it can be to get moving together.

Football Match

The football season is underway and the boys' team has made a solid start. Having won 3 and lost 2, they have shown excellent determination and have played some great football, especially against Lavender with Joshua scoring a goal from a near impossible angle. At the moment we are positioned just above mid-table with 3 more games to play. Hopefully, the boys will play with the same enthusiasm and flair that they have done already and finish the season in style.
