George Spicer Newsletter - 9th May 2025

Both this week and last we have seen some lovely whole-school gatherings.  This week we celebrated VE Day and looked at how this fitted with our value of Equality.  The messages of hope, togetherness and freedom from the time would be well suited to the modern day. Last week we did our first London Marathon (mini-marathon) where the whole school walked, jogged, ran (or a mixture of) round a half mile course over at the playing fields.  It was such a nice sight, watching staff and children, encouraging each other and supporting each other round the course.  A great number of school values were on display throughout the afternoon.

Gold Rights Respecting School Reaccreditation

George Spicer is delighted to announce the GOLD reaccreditation (our second) of UNICEF's Rights Respecting Schools Award.  We are the ONLY school in Enfield with this status!

We were able to show how our children’s well-being, safety and development is always at the heart of our ethos and culture. Our pupils, especially the Ambassadors, were amazing on the day; demonstrating a great understanding  of their own rights and the rights of others.  We are so proud of everyone that helped us achieve GOLD status, and those who spoke so eloquently and passionately about our school environment and the positive impact the award has had.

We vow to continue championing  and equipping our children to be caring upstanders, global citizens and the change makers of the future. Thank you all so much for your support!

Reception

This week in Reception we have been making the most of the sunshine by doing maths activities outside. We played a game called 'What's the score? How many more?' where we threw beanbags to number targets and added 2 numbers together. We were given different number targets to aim for and worked out how many more we would need to make the amount. Then we recorded our addition number sentences on our score sheet and noticed who had scored a bigger number.

We were also lucky enough to have a delivery of some special visitors! We now have some real live tadpoles in our classroom that we have been carefully observing and looking after. We've watched closely to see if we can spot any signs that they will turn into froglets soon!

Later in the week, we invited our families to our third family reading morning of this half-term. We completed fun phonics activities and shared our favourite stories.

Year 1

As part of our Science topic we are learning about plants, this week we went for a walk into the meadow to look at the flowers that grow and draw and label the flowers. The children were learning the names of the part of plants that grow above the ground.

“The flowers are colourful for the bees.’’ Joseph

“ I can see a caterpillar on the leaf.” Elvina

“The leaf is green.” Reggie

Year 2

Y2 have enjoyed taking part in many VE day activities this week. In the morning we created still life drawings of fruit and vegetables. This was to acknowledge the contribution of the Land Girls to the home front. The children then made these drawings 3D using special sponge like paper. We stuck all of our work onto a giant V to celebrate peace in Europe and to commemorate the brave men and women whom fought to keep the country going through war.

Year 3

Year 3 have been enjoying their new PE Topic this term on athletics where they have been improving and developing their running skills.

In Writing, they have been learning about different types of sentences and what the four main sentences are. As a result, they are able to confidently recognise a sentence that is a statement, question, command or exclamation. They are also able to write examples of these types of sentences. This will later feed into their big piece of writing by the end of the term on a non-chronological report about tea.

Year 4

To mark Victory in Europe Day (VE Day), Year 4 took part in a range of exciting and meaningful activities to deepen their understanding of this historic event. We were fortunate to have access to some fascinating World War II artefacts, generously shared by Blake from Amazon Class. These included ration books, a Christmas card sent from abroad and other important wartime documents.

Our very own 'mini museum' was set up in the hall, where children had the opportunity to closely examine these artefacts. They enjoyed drawing their favourite pieces, reading about VE Day from informative displays, and answering questions to reflect on what they had learned. They also studied photographs of each artefact in detail back in class.

Inspired by the artwork of Arcimboldo, the children took part in a whole school creative art activity based on the 'Dig for Victory' campaign. Each class created a 'V' for Victory using drawings of fruit and vegetables commonly grown during the war era. Year 4 had the choice of experimenting with both sketching pencils and oil pastels before creating their final piece.

We would like to say a huge thank you to Blake and his family for sharing these treasured items with us.

Year 5

Recently in Year 5, we have been working on our Design and Technology CAM projects. These are mechanisms that focus on rotary motion and movement for effect. Some examples of everyday items that use CAMs are: sewing machines, printing machines and car engines. The children have thoroughly enjoyed flexing their designing and practical skills to create cleverly engineered mechanisms.

We have also started our new Computing topic, Scratch Music. The children have embarked on creating their own piece of electronic music using Scratch commands and programming. The children have been mastering their knowledge of how to create loops and instrumental layers of sound. We are very proud and fortunate to have such creative musicians and coders within our Year Group!

To commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day, our pupils created some wonderful pieces of art inspired by Giuseppe Archimboldo's use of everyday objects (including fruit and vegetables). The children had earlier investigated the fruit and vegetables available during the war as part of the government's 'Dig for Victory' campaign. The children thought deeply about what fruit and veg would represent them best...they then produced these stunning self-portraits!

Year 6

In Writing the children continue to thoroughly enjoy our stimulus book, Rain Player. Based in Ancient Mayan times, the book is based around young Pik, who manages to anger the Rain God, Chac. Pik is challenged to a game of pok-a-tok by Chac as punishment for his disrespect. The stakes are high. If Pik wins he will get water for the drought-ridden village. If he loses he will be turned into a frog (uo) for eternity. This week the children predicted what might happen in the game of pok-a-tok and how Pik might receive help from jaguar, quetzel and cenote. They imagined how the game would unfold and gave some fabulously atmospheric descriptions about how Pik was feeling, how the action developed and, ultimately, who won the game. Read some of their fabulous story predictions...

Mini London Marathon

On Friday 2nd May, we were able to participate in this year's London School's Mini-Marathon.

It was a beautiful spring day and the children worked incredibly hard to run the full 2 miles around the park.

More than anything else, seeing the whole school - from reception through to year 6 -  taking part in the same event at the same time,  was really special and showed the community ethos of the school brilliantly.

A special thank you to Mr Rasheed for providing the soundtrack for the event and helping with the organisation.

Once again, thank you to all the children and staff who took part in whichever way. You should be very proud - 2 miles is a fair distance to run, especially in 24 degree sunshine!

KS1 Ambassadors

The KS1 Ambassadors would like to thank all the families who use active travel to get to school; walking, scootering, cycling and making use of our convenient Park and Stride locations.  It really does make a positive difference to the safety and air quality around our school.

The KS1 Ambassadors have seen how congested the scooter storage is for Reception and Year 2 and wanted to do something about it.  They wrote letters to Enfield Council and Sir Sadiq Kahn, the Mayor of London.  Enfield Council have agreed to fund a new scooter rack so a big thank you to them.  Hopefully this will be installed in the Summer.  We also received a lovely letter from Mr Khan himself!

Tesco Stronger Starts Scheme

We are excited to announce that George Spicer have been awarded the £1,500 prize by Tesco's Stronger Starts scheme. Thanks to everyone who shopped at Tesco's and who added so many blue tokens to our pot, to ensure our cause received the most votes. We can't wait to use this money to improve the health of our students, by investing in our playground areas and purchasing a greater range of sports equipment.

Thank you to all the children who have been logging on and reading using the Oxford Reading Buddy app. Our Easter competition closed last week and the five winners of the £5 book vouchers, to be spent at our book fair, were;

Riley, Xavier & Jack who are all in Year 2

Deniz & Alaz in Year 3

Big congratulations to them and remember to keep reading!

BookTrust on X: "Wondering why reading is SO good for children? Our new interactive resource lets you discover the academic research showing the amazing ways books can make a difference: https://t.co/rOKBb7t8kU https://t.co/w4mJMajptD" /

We wanted to say thank you to all the families who attended our book fair which was held at both sites this week. We sold over £1500.00 worth of books and as a result we will receive commission on the amount sold in order to buy new books for our children to read.
