George Spicer Newsletter - 20th December 2024

As we approach the end of another busy term, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the past few months and share a message with you all.

At George Spicer Primary School, we are incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication shown by our pupils, staff, and the entire school community. Despite the challenges we have faced, your children have continued to thrive, and we are grateful for your unwavering support.

As we look ahead to the upcoming holidays, I would like to encourage you all to take some time to rest, recharge, and enjoy quality time with your families. These precious moments are so important for our well-being and can help us return to school feeling refreshed and ready to continue our learning journey.

During this holiday season, I would also like to remind everyone of the importance of kindness and understanding. Our school values of equality, resilience, determination, responsibility, kindness, and respect have been the foundation of our community, and it is crucial that we continue to uphold these principles in our interactions with one another.

Remember, we are all in this together, and by supporting and lifting each other up, we can create an environment where every child and family feels valued and respected.

I wish you all a safe and joyful holiday season. Enjoy your family time together – it is presence not presents that really matters!  We look forward to welcoming you back in the new year, ready to continue our mission of "Learning Well today to live a better tomorrow."

Reception

Reception: Maths - More and Less

The children have been looking at using the tens frames to make a number and then finding out what is one more and one less. Some children even explained how they can work it out without using tens frames! Keep up the counting skills, Reception children.

Year 1

‘Tis the season to be jolly… This week the children in Year 1 have had great fun designing and making a 3D decoration as part of their DT lesson. They used their own ideas for the design, mixed the salt-dough,  then cut and painted their decoration. Finally, the children decorated their ornament and evaluated it, saying what they liked and how it could be improved.  G commented “It’s beautiful!”

Year 2

This week the children have been crafting and creating Christmas based items such as Christmas cards and salt dough decorations. To create their salt dough the children measured out the flour, salt and water, mixed the elements together. After then the rolled the dough, flattened it and created a winter or festive shape. Once they were baked the children decorated them. They also used their cutting skills to make trees to make a card to give to someone.

Year 3

What a great term!

Year 3 have started their time in Key Stage 2 brilliantly. They have transitioned well to the Sketty Road building with maturity and a determination to learn. The whole Year 3 team have been so impressed with their efforts this term and wish them a lovely break.

To conclude our learning from this half-term, we completed tasks in Humanities to show how much we now know. In Geography, we have been learning about Mountains and in History we have been exploring the Cradles of Civilisation. The children have thoroughly impressed us with their impressive recall of key vocabulary and their ability to connect to past learning.

Year 4

In Writing, we began a new book called ‘Until I met Dudley’. Sybi “I thought that the book was interesting as it taught us how an invention works.” Blake “I enjoyed learning about how things work. I did not expect that a vacuum cleaner and a toaster had so many parts inside that help them work.” We learnt so many scientific facts and it linked to our Electricity topic.

In class, we had an opportunity to write down questions we had on how a vacuum cleaner works. Our teachers then demonstrated how it works and described the different parts such as a fan, filter, duct, motor. These are some of the parts required to help a vacuum cleaner work. We cannot wait to continue this book in January.

Year 5

Year 5 have thoroughly enjoyed their final week of term. We have been busy writing and performing our Shakespeare playscripts for a missing scene, where Miranda tries to plead her love for Ferdinand to her father Prospero. The pupils have truly embraced the Shakespearean language and used a few 'Thous' and 'Thees' within their writing. The children are now fully immersed into the story and the traits of the characters. We have enjoyed analysing the language and discussing the dramatic scenes of betrayal, love, revenge and manipulation of The Tempest.

In PE this week we enjoyed creating our final 'Bridge' sequences. The children joined with another group to explore and perform bridges from different levels and perspectives.  The flexibility, invention and poise shown was outstanding! A bridge too far...definitely not!

Year 6

This week Year 6 finished off their unit in RW. They thought about what values they would include in a Code for Living and explained why they chose these as their most important values. They then went on to write the Ten Commandments for the Community. They did exceptionally well to list ten values that they feel individuals should abide by to make a successful community. They then explained what actions would represent these qualities. Well done Year 6. You displayed a mature approach to the notion of values and expressed your own values beautifully.

As we approach the Christmas holidays, we would like to remind you about the Oxford Reading Buddy app that your child has a login for. It is in their reading record and it has been sent home with them from your child's class teacher.

What is Oxford Reading Buddy?

Oxford Reading Buddy is a digital reading service to help your child to develop important skills in reading and to encourage them to read more. It contains hundreds of digital books from Oxford University Press’s well-known reading series including Project X and the Biff, Chip and Kipper stories from Oxford Reading Tree – all matched to your child’s reading level. It offers special Coaching eBooks to develop comprehension

Each week, we celebrate the children who have been reading books through this app. This term, Xavier in Year 2, has read 167 books through the Oxford Reading Buddy. He was awarded in assembly with a certificate and a new book to read at home. Fantastic work, Xavier!

Courses for parents

Enfield Council and the NHS, in collaboration with inourplace.co.uk, are delivering a host of courses for parents. A parent from Year 2 attended one of these courses and gave us some very positive feedback. Please see the posters and contact them directly if you would like to book a place on one of the courses. They have courses which are for families with children of all different age groups.
