George Spicer Newsletter - 24th October 2024

Thank you - Thank you to a child in Ash class who found £20 in the park after school and has kindly chosen to donate this to FoGs.

Well done to our Girl's Football team for putting on three great performances on Tuesday afternoon. The girls cruised to a 4-0 victory over Hazelbury, after a superb hattrick from Maddie. In the second match, the girls fought hard in an evenly matched encounter with St. Georges that ended 0-0. Eager to continue and play an additional friendly match, the girls beat St. Andrews 1-0 in a reverse fixture from last week. The girls performed superbly this week; showcasing their teamwork, communication, technical and positional sense with tremendous skill and commitment. The Girl of the Match was incredibly close, so much so that Maddie and Beatrice-Ann shared the accolade. We are extremely proud of each and every one of you!

The theme for the week is,' Choose Respect.' As part of this we will be asking everyone in our school community to wear Odd Socks on Tuesday 12th November, with their school uniform. We look forward to seeing your Odd Socks!

Reception

Reception have had a very exciting couple of weeks exploring the book, 'Anansi the Spider'. We learned all about where the story originated from in Ghana, Africa and have enjoyed singing traditional songs and retelling the story. We have created spider dens, spider collages, practised drawing spiders and have even been on a spider hunt to try and find Anansi. This week our Anansi spider went missing from our classrooms so we are busy writing descriptive posters to solve the mystery! Look out for him on your way to and from school!

Year 1

The pupils in Year 1 have been reading the story "Naughty Bus" by Jan and Jerry Oke and last week, they were asked to bring in a toy from home to support their writing.  The children were so keen to show off their toys and eagerly discussed how they worked.  Each child then wrote a page for a class, non-fiction book, all about toys. L said she could tell it was "non-fiction because it has a contents page and isn't made up."

Year 2

Last week in Year 2, we had our Reading workshops. Parents were invited in to watch a GSR session to support them at home and gain a greater understanding of the types of questions to ask to move children on with their reading and comprehension.

We had lots of parents and children excited by the book 'Minibeasts Poems' and engaged in the sessions. One parent said 'it was lovely to see how it's taught so we can reinforce at home'. L said - 'I like to read because I can use my imagination'. Don't forget to log into your Oxford Reading Buddy at home. There are many books available and quizzes to help your comprehension!

Year 3

Black History Month

Year 3 learnt about Dido Elizabeth Belle this half term. She was a woman born to an enslaved mother and a navy officer. Her father took her to live with her uncle the Earl of Mansfield. We discussed how she had a better life than some people at the time (especially people who shared her skin colour) but that she wasn’t treated equally to her cousin, who was white, whom also lived with her uncle.

We analysed this famous piece of art that was painted of the two cousins:

We linked this learning to two of the UNCRC articles:

Article 2 - No Discrimination

Article 7 - Name and Nationality

We also looked at the artist Frank Bowling. He is a Black British artist who created abstract art. He likes to experiment with paint. We were inspired by him and so experimented with pouring paint on top of each other to create abstract art.

We enjoyed this process and will look at creating more abstract art this year.

Year 4

Year 4 have spent the last few weeks exploring the fantastic artist Frank Bowling. Sir Frank Bowling is described as "one of Britain's greatest living abstract painters", as "one of the most distinguished black artists to emerge from post-war British art schools" and as a "modern master". We found out that in 2008, Frank was given a special award called the Order of the British Empire, or an OBE, from the Queen which the monarch awards in recognition of someone’s contribution to a particular area, such as the arts. How amazing was that? In class, we discussed how his artwork made us feel. We all agreed that it made us feel calm and relaxed. We enjoyed using watercolours to recreate one of his images in our own style. Frank Bowling, your work is amazing!

Year 5

In Year 5 this week, we have been celebrating Black History Month. We have been inspired by the life and literature of Malorie Blackman and the powerful impressionist artwork of Frank Bowling. For our artwork we have created our own watercolour backdrop, finished with a country that is 'Dear to our hearts' in bold outline. We explored Frank Bowling's concept of 'Identity' and being proud of where you come from (Article 7 & 8 of the UNCRC charter).

We also used acrylic paint and string as a way of producing some interesting abstract art, again inspired by Frank Bowling's love for using different skills and techniques when 'making marks' on a canvas. We have thoroughly enjoyed watching these works-of-art being created!

Year 6

In Science, Year 6 are coming towards the end of their Classification unit. They have been learning about taxonomy, a system created by botanist Carolus Linnaeus. He is regarded as the 'father of taxonomy'. Taxonomy deals with the study of naming, classifying, and comparing them based on similarities and dissimilarities. This week the children used their learning to create their own taxonomy branches to classify a range of plant and animal species, using a range of observable characteristics to create their categories.
