George Spicer Newsletter - 22nd March 2024

Attendance – you are now able to view your child’s attendance by logging into the Arbor App.  Please note that if your child’s attendance is below 90%, we will not authorise any absence without medical evidence (e.g., doctor’s certificate or letter, hospital appointment card, prescription or the prescribed medication, or text message appointment).

Reporting Absences - You must call in every day if your child is absent. Please, when reporting absences, leave a clear message with your child's name, class and the reason for absence.

Sickness - If your child is unwell due to vomiting/diarrhoea, please ensure you do not send them to school for at least 24 hours since their last spell of sickness.

Lateness - The number of children arriving late in the mornings is high. Unfortunately, it is the same children repeatedly.  Gates close at 9am and learning starts promptly at this time.  If your child is 5 minutes late every day, this equates to nearly 3 whole days of missed learning, plus it’s disruptive for other children.  Please try to drop your child/children at least 5/10 minutes early to avoid this continuous lateness.

Headlice - There have been cases of headlice across both sites. We would like to advise you to check your child's/children's hair to avoid a spread. Please can we reinforce that it is important to keep your child's hair up if it is shoulder length or longer.

Reception

Reception: Solving Mathematical Problems

Reception has had a really busy week. We looked at how to eat healthily and how to look after our teeth. We also had a visit from the Happy Puzzle company that challenged the Reception children to solve puzzles and work together as a team. The children counted fish, they matched the shapes and recreated pictures using 3D shapes. They also stacked blocks to create a pyramid without any gaps. The puzzles were very challenging and the children’s interdependent skills were put to the test in these activities.

Year 1

This week in Year 1, we have been measuring. The children have been comparing objects using the vocabulary longer, taller, shorter. We have discussed the difference between longer and taller. We have been using non-standard units of measurement e.g. cubes, to measure objects around the classroom. We started to make predictions about how many cubes long an object would be. The children have really enjoyed measuring and have wanted to explore more in their own time.

Year 2

This week, we have continued our learning about the Great Fire of London. In history, we created comic strips to show how life changed for Londoners after the fire.

During our writing lessons, we wrote poetry and had a go at adding rhyming couplets to our work.

It seems that the whole year group has learnt so many new facts and have really enjoyed this topic.

Year 3

Year 3 have enjoyed all the different pronunciations of Anglo-Saxon names from Aethelfaed to Athlered (… and so have their teachers). In their writing they produced a line graph showing Aethelflaed's growth as a female leader. They then used this as a tool to support their writing of a battle speech. In history, they explored the differences between primary and secondary sources and explored what sources are considered reliable. They also used their reasoning skills to justify why certain sources are not reliable.

Year 4

This term in Science, Year 4 have been learning all about sound and this week's lesson focussed on the volume of sound. The 'big question' we investigated this week was 'What happens to the volume of sound when you move further away from the sound source?'

Year 4 worked in groups to listen to a piece of music played via a Bluetooth speaker in the centre of the playground and used data loggers to record the volume in decibels as they moved further away from the sound at different intervals.

Year 4 discovered that sounds that are louder have stronger vibrations, so they can be heard further away and quieter sounds with weaker vibrations can only travel shorter distances.

Year 5

This week in Science year 5 have been continuing to learn about plant and animal life cycles. This time we were learning about the life cycle of birds and in particular the life cycle of chickens. We learned about some of the features of birds - that they are warm blooded, have feathers, lay eggs and look after their young (like mammals) until they are old enough to look after themselves. We learned about the different stages of their life cycle including fertilisation, incubation, hatching, pullet and adult hen or rooster.

In Art we have been learning how to mix colours to make different skin tones for our Henry VIII portraits. We learnt about primary, secondary and tertiary colours. You can use primary colours to make secondary colours and mix secondary colours to make tertiary colours. We also learnt how to graduate a tone and make it darker or lighter with white or darker colours.

Year 6

WW2 - Battle of the Atlantic

In History, this week, we learnt about the Battle of the Atlantic. This was the longest battle in WW2 and took place on the Atlantic Ocean. It was between the British, who were protecting their convoy from America, and the Germans, who used U-Boats to attack them. Reading an interview transcript, we looked for the physiological and psychological impact this would have had on the crew.

Inspired by this, we wrote fiction based on this event. We have been writing a 3rd Person Narrative of Captain Thomas waiting for a U-Boat attack. We thought about how to build cohesion in our work as well as how to entertain our reader.

Musical Theatre Club

A big jazz hand shout out to our Year 3 and 4 musical theatre club, who last week, took part in our showcase of The Lion King. You were all so fantastic and we hope to see you up on a stage again! Well done!
