Our Value - Kindness

I hope this newsletter finds you well.  Assemblies this week focused on our value of kindness.  Kindness is truly a superpower that each and every one of us possesses. It has the ability to brighten someone's day, create a sense of belonging, and make the world a better place.

At Kimberley Gardens, we delved into the book "Be Kind," which beautifully illustrates the importance of small acts of kindness in our daily lives. The children were captivated by the story and engaged in thoughtful discussions about how they can spread kindness in their own unique ways.

Meanwhile, at Sketty Road, we were inspired by the incredible journey of Sebbie Hall. Sebbie set out to perform Random Acts of Kindness every single day for a year. Astonishingly, this initiative has now been going on for over 18 months, and Sebbie has even established a foundation to continue his mission. His story left a lasting impression on the children, encouraging them to find their own ways to make a positive impact in the world.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind all parents of the importance of modelling kindness for our children. By demonstrating acts of kindness in our daily lives, we teach our children the power of empathy, compassion, and understanding. Together, we can create a more harmonious and inclusive community.

Lastly, I would like to inform you that World Kindness Day is approaching on 13th November. This is a global celebration dedicated to promoting kindness in all its forms. We encourage you to mark this special day with your family, perhaps by engaging in acts of kindness or discussing the importance of kindness with your children.

Thank you for your ongoing support in fostering a culture of kindness at George Spicer Primary School. Together, we can make a difference.  I would also like to wish a very happy Diwali to all families celebrating this weekend.

Reception

This week reception have been learning about Diwali. We have read the story Rama and Sita and have been enjoying acting using props, as well as creating traditional Diwali art pieces, such as Diva lamps and rangoli patterns.

For literacy we have been using talking tables, where we create scenes of interest to encourage 'talk for writing'. This week many of the children retold the Diwali story by drawing and writing story maps.

"Diwali is colourful and everyone is happy" Amelia said

"Rangoli patterns are made from different colour rice" Woody said

Year 1

This week in Year 1 we have been looking at how we keep safe online. The children came up with many great ideas on how they could keep safe online, such as;

'Asking a parent/ adult to help me'

'Not going on apps I'm not allowed to'

'Only going on games for my age'

They then drew a picture of them keeping safe online. Some children drew a picture of their adult sitting with them whilst on a device.

Year 2

In Year 2 this week we have continued to learn about World War I and how we remember those who have died defending our freedom. We discussed Remembrance, how it began and that it is also a time to remember and think about anyone who has been affected by conflict.  As part of our learning, we have made landscape paintings of the poppies which grew on the battlefields after the war.

Year 3

Without having to take an aeroplane to travel around the world, Year 3 got to experience different climate zones (temperate, polar, dry and tropical) in different classes. They learnt what the weather conditions were like, what animals lived there and how they adapted to their environment. It was lovely to hear the children justify which climate zones they preferred and whether or not they could adapt to the climate there or not.

The children are also continuing with their work on using the column method to solve addition problems - now moving on to exchanging ones and tens. In writing, they have been writing an information text about the importance of the buffalo to Native American people on the Great Plains.

Year 4

As part of our electricity unit this half term, we explored open and closed circuits using different objects as our circuits. We worked in groups and showcased our open and closed circuits to the rest of the class, by using paper clips and drawing pins. We were able to notice that the paper clips and drawing pins were conductors of electricity.

We had our first strings lesson after half term and learnt the lyrics to the classic What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong which we all thoroughly enjoyed!

Year 5

This week year 5 have been visiting a Gurdwara as part of our learning about the Sikh religion. We learned about the importance of a Gurdwara as a place for Sikhs to meet and worship. A Gurdwara is any building where the Guru Granth Sahib is kept which is the Sikhi holy book.

Gurdwara’s are places where people from any religion can come and meet with friends or people from their community. We learned that a Gurdwara is a place the whole community can use for learning, sharing food and helping others.

We also had the pleasure of watching Ra’s class assembly. It was an exciting retelling of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Ra did a great job. Massive thanks to Ms Colosso and Ms Jackson for their superhuman effort in preparing the scripts, rehearsing and getting costumes ready for the performance.

Year 6

Science

Year 6 have started their new Science unit: Evolution and Inheritance. We began by learning about famous Scientist Charles Darwin, whose theory of Evolution changed how we view the world. To further explore this unit, we looked at the evolution of the blue whale. The children were blown away to see how a four-legged land mammal (the indohyus) evolved over the millennia to become the blue whale.

As part of their learning, they had to sequence the animals shown to show the different stages of the evolution as well as note down the changes we saw between each animal.

In English, we were inspired by our new Science knowledge so wrote instructions on How to Evolve into a Blue Whale. We thought about how our choice of language could be adapted so that we sounded like we were talking to a creature. We also thought about how we could use our learning from last week (where we wrote instructions) to help us this week. We plan to finish this soon but are proud of what we have created so far.
