Mr Spong's Assembly

Mr Spong’s assembly this week continued to celebrate Black British Sisters.  When thinking about the Black presence in British history, we may think only of the slave trade or the Windrush generation, but records have shown Black Britons as far back as the Roman era.  The Ivory Bangle Lady whose discovery refutes the idea that African immigrants were only poor slaves or servants to the rich.  We also looked at Margaret Busby who was a pioneer for Black literature and has inspired so many Black women to pursue a literary career.  However, the main focus turned to that of Yvonne Conolly - Britain's first female Black headteacher.  Her courage, her warmth and child-focused approach are an inspiration to all aspiring school teachers and leaders, she left behind a powerful legacy, and is rightly being remembered as a trailblazer.  All of the ‘sisters’ we have focused on can be found, alongside others in this book, 30 Sheroes who Shook Britain which we can highly recommend.

PSHE

Our topic this half-term in PSHE is all about ‘Celebrating Difference’.  It focusses on our similarities and differences and teaches about diversity.  The children learn to accept everyone’s right to ‘difference’.  There is also a huge focus in these sessions on anti-bully, including cyber bullying.

National Road Safety week takes place during the week beginning 20th November.  As part of the children’s PSHE lessons this week, they will take part in a variety of sessions to highlight the importance of staying safe on our roads.

Reception News

Having inspiration from reading 'The Nature Trail' by Benjamin Zephaniah before half-term, reception completed a homework challenge to gather autumnal collections in preparation to create pieces of art inspired by Alma Thomas. We have been learning about her art piece called 'The Eclipse' from her series of 'Space Paintings', which focusses on sunsets to rocket launches.

In small groups, the children enjoyed sorting their autumnal collections by colour, shape and size to create symbolic pictures. Learning a wide range of literacy vocabulary, has allowed the children to describe and explain how and why they have created their piece of art.

"The leaves are orange and crunchy because it is Autumn," said Jade.

"A sycamore seed is like an aeroplane, it spins," said Azaiah.

Year 1

Year One have been learning about Walter Tull this week. They were excited to learn that he played for a local football club (Tottenham) over 100 years ago. We learned that he was awarded winners medals in the FA Amateur Cup. The children then got to look at different medals and design their own medal.  We look forward to painting them at the end of the week.

Year 2

This week in Year 2, pupils have been learning about World War I and they were excited to learn all about life in the trenches. On boards, they have practised writing as if they were soldiers in the trenches, and have begun artwork that incorporates poppies as they learn all about Remembrance.  In PSHE they were learning about how we can build friendships by finding out what you have in common with others. As part of our Maths sessions, we have been learning how to use the inverse operation to solve addition and subtraction questions.

Year 3

Year 3 have had a fantastic start to their first week back. They have been working really hard! The children have enjoyed being introduced to their new reading text - When Jessie Came Across the Sea by Amy Hest. They have also been using the column method to solve addition problems.

Year 4

In Year 4 this week, we started our new and exciting topic all about Electricity! We looked at the components of an electrical circuit and had the chance to create our own circuits using the resources. We talked about why the battery was the most useful component to a circuit and how to make a bulb shine brighter. We are looking forward to exploring circuits more next week in Science.

Year 5

This week saw the beginning of a new half-term and a new topic - The Realm of the Khan. Children learned about the early life of Genghis Khan and how this shaped him as the ruthless ruler we know him to be. In writing, the children wrote 3rd person narratives about Temujin (Genghis Khan) and his brother Bekther who fell out dramatically over a marmot (Ask your children if you don't know), resulting in the death of Bekther. Here are some of our stories.

Year 6

Year 6 wrote instructions this week on "How to leave a Haunted House".

The children thought carefully about who their target audience was and who might have entered the Haunted House. Some write as if the person following the instructions was an adventurous person whereas others wrote it for a person wishing to show how brave they were.

They then thought carefully about the equipment they'd need and the different steps they'd need to do. The children really enjoyed this and have learnt the key features needed for writing instructions. We will continue writing instructions next week on a different topic.
