George Spicer Newsletter - 8th September 2023

Welcome back

It certainly has been a warm welcome back to school this week!  The start of term is a great time in the school year, it’s full of promise, hope and enthusiasm.  Children happy and excited to be back...parents even happier and more excited that their children are back!  I spoke in assembly this week about the chances and opportunities that a new year bring and how the children can choose what path or direction they travel.  The feel and smell of a brand-new book is a joy to the senses as well as the work that then fills it.

I asked them to think about all the achievements and improvements they have made so far and then to think about their targets and goals for the year.  I shared with the children that they, if they have 100% attendance and they all obviously will, only have 190 days to try their best and to work towards obtaining those goals – so they better get cracking as there is no time like the present and as the saying goes; 'Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift, which is why we call it the present.'  Mr Spong

Year 1

Welcome to Year 1! The children this week have been reading the book You Choose. They have been using different materials to build a house that they would choose to live in.. They particularly enjoyed using the podleys outside to build different shape houses

Year 2

This week in Year 2 pupils have enjoyed activities linked to their ‘Habitats’ topic.  They have been building bird feeders to support the local bird species, and then visited the playing fields to take a look at the wildlife that live there.  They also spent time writing a poem about themselves, entitled ‘The writer of this poem…’ using adjectives for description.  As part of their Reading sessions, pupils have been reading a book called ‘The Dragon Hunter’, which is all about the Komodo dragon and its habitat.  Ask the children if they can remember any exciting facts!

Year 3

Year 3 have made an excellent start at the Sketty Road site!  They have shown fantastic focus during sessions and are settling in well.  During Maths this week, we have focused on learning all about 3D shapes and had great fun using spaghetti and playdoh to create them.  In Writing, we have been learning about the Legend of Kiz Kulesi (which means Maiden’s Tower) from Turkey.  Ask your child if they can tell you the main parts of the story!  Keep up the great effort, Year 3.

Year 4

The children have settled fantastically in Year 4 this week and we are incredibly proud of them. In PSHE we have been looking at ways that we can be a team and played some team building games which we thoroughly enjoyed!

We have also started our new topic Welcome to the Jungle. In Geography, we had the chance to research countries in South America and are looking forward to learning more about South America, especially Brazil.

Year 5

Year 5 have had a great start to the new academic year. They have settled in really well and their new class teachers were impressed with their impeccable behaviour in class and around the school. We can see they are going to be excellent role models to the younger children at Sketty road. We started by reminding ourselves of the school expectations for learning and behaviour with a lesson about the 4 Be’s. Children drew around their own hands and wrote how they would keep to these promises. They signed their name as if to sign a contract so they know a commitment has been made. We have also started our new writing topic Dracula. The children are writing a third person narrative of dialogue between 2 characters in the story. We are excited to see how their stories turn out.

Year 6

Well done to Year 6 for settling in so seamlessly to their final year at George Spicer. Already we have begun to explore more sophisticated and mature themes in our writing, taking a more sinister approach to the children's book, 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt.'

As teachers, we have really enjoyed getting to know our new classes and are excited to work hard and make it a year to remember.
