Quote of the week

Did you hear about the rose that grew
from a crack in the concrete?
Proving nature's law is wrong it
learned to walk without having feet.
Funny it seems, but by keeping its dreams,
it learned to breathe fresh air.
Long live the rose that grew from concrete
when no one else ever cared.

- Tupac Shakur

Reception Class

Reception had a very special visitor this week. We have been learning all about 'Knights and Castles' in class, our visitor John brought in lots of interesting historical artefacts for us to explore. We even had the chance to try on some very heavy armour! We learnt about different swords, shields and even the special shoes Knights would wear to complete their duties. Kylie said 'The helmet was very heavy, it was for protection.'

To become a Knight a person had to be noble, kind, brave, fair, forgiving, honest and hopeful. We have been thinking about how we can be like brave and kind like the Knights from a long time ago. Aija said 'I am super brave like the Knights, I'm not scared'.

Thank you to our special visitor for teaching us all about the Knights!

Year 1

To kick off the start of their new topic, Year 1 have been writing riddles to describe a British reptile or amphibian. Can you guess what Ash class’s creature was?

Last week in Science we completed an experiment! We had to investigate which resource would melt ice the quickest. First, we made our predictions on which resource we thought would be best. We then carried out our investigation, using a hairdryer, salt, water, sugar and a hat. Most of us predicted that a hairdryer would melt the ice quickest due to the heat it gave, and we were glad to see that we were correct.

Year 2

This week in Year 2 has been really fun for the teachers as we have enjoyed watching the pupils practising their lines and singing beautifully as part of our rehearsals for the end of year performance.   We have also been learning all about the Tasmanian Tiger (an extinct animal that used to exist in Australia), and used this information to write some very interesting non- chronological reports. As part of our Science lessons, we have learned about food chains. The pupils played a game which matched producers and their consumers.

Year 3

This week, Year 3 went on a trip to Whipsnade Zoo!

We travelled by coach and on the way the children loved discussing all the different kinds of animals they may see at the zoo. After arriving, the children loved exploring the different continents! They saw a range of animals (tigers, giraffes, elephants, bears, zebras, rhinos) to name a few. They learnt lots of lovely facts and were treated to a giraffe workshop where they became scientists and explored the behaviour patterns of different giraffes over a period of time. It was a memorable day and the children were so well behaved! Well done Year 3!

Year 4

In Year 4 we have been learning about the digestive system. There's lots of key scientific vocabulary that we needed to learn to write about this topic, and so we did a stomach-churning demonstration of what happens to the food as it travels through the body. We also wrote some acrostic poems to try and understand the stages of the process in more detail. The children have written some create explanation texts showcasing their knowledge which we will write up in neat next week!

Year 5

In Geography, we created a map of Egypt and used a key to show the main human and physical features of this region.  Well done all.

This week, we were blown away by the children’s writing.  As part of our new topic, they produced some incredible third-person narratives based on Frankenstein by Mary Shelley.  We could not be prouder of their effort and enthusiasm and the results speak for themselves.

Year 6

Year 6 - Poetry Week

Carrying on with our World War II Topic, the Year 6 pupils focused on writing poems about the Battle of Stalingrad. They first looked at a range of poems to discuss the features of poems as shown in the pictures below.

Then the pupils generated key words that they associate with the Battle of Stalingrad. From this bank of words, they proceeded to write their own Haikus (a poem with three lines, where the first line has five syllables, the second line has seven syllables and the third line has five syllables). Here is an example of a Haiku written by one of the Year pupils.

We then focused on writing poems with rhyming couplets that encapsulated the aftermath of the battle. Working in pairs they tried to include the features we identified in the first lesson.
