Parents’ Consultation evening meetings - Parents' Consultation evening meetings are on Monday 21st and Wednesday 23rd November. Please ensue you are available to start the meeting on time, if you login early you will be held in a queue.  The link to join the meeting is at the bottom of the email confirmation you received when you book the appointment.  Reminder email has also been sent out.

Football Club - On Monday 21^st November, Football Club is cancelled due to parents’ consultation evening.

Churchbury Photographs - Children’s photographs are now available to purchase online. Parents have until December 1st to order online, they can choose either free delivery to school or a Direct home delivery for a small fee. Please email the school office if you have missed place or lost your assess code. office@georgespicer.enfield.sch.uk 

Reception School Admissions - If you have a child born between 1 September 2018 and 31 August 2019, you will need to apply for a primary school place by 15 January 2023.

Reception Class

This week we have been learning about Remembrance. We started by watching an animation of a hare who was very happy and then it all changed - the hare got very frightened, at the end of the video lots of poppies grew in the fields. Kendrick said 'The music is loud and a bit scary!', Aiden said 'The poppies at the end made the hare very happy.' We learnt about why it is important to remember people who helped to keep us safe during the war and that the poppy flower is a symbol of remembrance. In our continuous provision, we drew poppies, collaged and painted them too. We stuck all of our poppies together to make four big poppy men. Reception would like to say thank you to all the service men and women who keep us safe. 

Year 1

On Monday, Year 1 completed their fieldwork task. Each class had their own area in the playing fields, where they recorded different types of rubbish on a tally. Later on in the week, we will compare our results and decide where best to place a bin! Whilst there, we saw somebody also picking up rubbish from the ground. We discussed how this would alter our findings. We couldn't believe how much litter had been left behind after the sunny weekend.

In Writing, we have been learning about hibernation process of a dormouse! We have had lots of fun taking part in role play pretending to be the dormouse. Throughout the week, we will be writing an explanation text to explain it in more detail. We were interested to find out that whilst hibernating, the dormouse's body gets cold and its heart rate and breathing slows down. 

Year 2

This week in year 2 we have ended our ‘Remembrance’ topic with a wonderful workshop led by historian John Conyard.

He allowed children to explore artefacts from the era, including trying on some replica army supplies and uniform such as gas masks.

They thoroughly enjoyed being immersed in the World War I era, and were an amazing audience.  As part of our Science curriculum, they

Also had the chance to explore a range of materials and discuss which ones would be suitable for making different objects.  The pupils had a chance to test the materials - they particularly enjoyed finding out which ones were waterproof!

Year 3 

This week in Science, Year 3 recognised the features of different types of soil. They conducted an experiment to find out which soil would be best for growing plants in the garden. They worked on their tables to put a table spoon of soil into their filter papered funnel, before slowly pouring in 100ml of water. They then observed how much water soaked through their soil and collected in their measuring beaker in 1 minute, before recording their results in a table. Each group had a different soil to test. The children worked on ensuring that it was a fair test and our results were shared and discussed at the end.  

Year 5 

Geography - Mongolia

As part of our new unit, The Realm of the Khan, Year 5 began by drawing a free hand map of Mongolia. They then investigated the type of land within Mongolia and discussed the nomadic lifestyle that many Mongolian people followed. The children used watercolours to show the different types of land, such as high mountain, talga forest, mountain steppe forest, steppe, desert steppe and desert. We then discussed if we were a nomad, which areas would we most like to settle in and why. We discussed the need for being close in proximity to natural resources and how living up on higher terrain, such as the high mountains, could cause more challenges when sourcing food, water and shelter, due to the harsher climate conditions.

We then learnt how to accurately locate a specific topographical figure on a map, using a six-figure grid reference. Building on our Year 4 knowledge of understanding four-figure grid references, the children learnt to be more specific by locating key topographical features, such as the Altai Mountains and the Khuiten Peak, by using a six-figure grid reference. The children worked brilliantly in partners and showed excellent understanding of the importance of being accurate when using grid references. 

Year 6 

Exploring the Democratic Republic of the Congo

Over the last two weeks, we have been exploring the topographical features of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). We began by using Kapow to look at the country and its topographical features. We looked at the features of the land, and in partners noted these onto the map of the DRC.

We found out the Democratic Republic of Congo is almost land-locked and that 7 countries border it. 

We then compared the features of the Democratic Republic of Congo to that of the United Kingdom. We looked at how the equator, which cuts through the DRC, has shaped the landscape and how this impacts on both the physical and human geography of the country. 

When looking at the population of the countries, we discussed how even though DRC is over 10 times bigger than the UK, the population difference is only roughly half. We decided that this would be due to the large rainforest that resides within the equatorial range of the DRC, making it hard for people to live in this area. 

We are really enjoying learning about this country and look forward to discovering more.
