George Spicer newsletter - 11th November 2022

Punctuality - The school gates open at 8.45am for a soft start to support a calm arrival to school. All our pupils are expected to be in class for registration by 09:00 am. The school gates are then locked at this point.  Pupils need to be in school by 09:00 am for registration. If your child arrives after 09:00 am, they will receive a late mark (L). If your child arrives after 09:10 am, they will receive a 'U' code (missed session) on their registration certificate which will impact on their overall attendance percentage.

Absences - must be reported in writing by email or by phone by 9am daily. Please leave a brief message with your child's name, class and the reason for their absence.  It will be recorded as unauthorised if you do not leave a reason or say your child is 'unwell'. 

Appointments - You must provide an appointment card / letter for your child’s absence to be classed as medical, otherwise it will be marked as an unauthorised absence.  Please note we expect your child to attend school either side of their appointment where possible.

Parents’ Consultation evening meetings - Parents' Consultation evening meetings are on Monday 21st and Wednesday 23rd November, if you haven't booked your appointment or are experiencing any issues please contact the school office via email office@georgespicer.enfield.sch.uk to book.  

Pupil Emergency Contact Form  - Not many have submitted the form, for this reason we are opening the link again, please click on the link to complete Emergency contact and consent form .  Please submit your contacts ASAP so we can amend our records.  If you have submitted the form already “THANK YOU”.

Reception School Admissions - If you have a child born between 1 September 2018 and 31 August 2019, you will need to apply for a primary school place by 15 January 2023.

Dogs in the playground - Please be aware we DO NOT allow dogs on to the premises unless they are guide/assistant dogs.

Scholastic Book Club is up and running! Go to scholastic book club to browse the latest books and order online. For every £1 you spend on this month’s Book Club, our school will earn 20p in Scholastic Rewards.  Please place your order online by November 30th, 2022.

Flu Nasal Immunisation - you should all have received a letter with regards the flu immunisation at George Spicer and to give consent.  The immunisation team will be in school the following dates:

Food bank - We are very aware of the impact of the cost of living to some of our families. As always we are looking at ways to support or advise where we are able.  We currently have Felix Project every Wednesday and we are also working on setting up  school foodbank, please contact the school office or Learning Mentor if you need help.

Road Safety Week News

This week we have been promoting Road Safety and the children have been learning about how to stay safe on the road.  The week started at Sketty Road with an assembly led by the Community Council Ambassadors.  The KS2 Ambassadors did a great job sharing different ways to Be Safe and spoke clearly and confidently.  Everyone at Sketty Road listened carefully and respectfully.  We love how so many take on board some of the advice given and have told their adults at home!

We love how parents feedback to us too!! We received this amazing photo of a year 4 pupil showing how bright his bag is as a result of the Bright Bag competition.

The Golden Padlock also made an appearance this week.  Children at Kimberley Gardens in particular made a super effort to wear a helmet when they scootered or cycled.  Keep wearing them - you never know when the Golden Padlock will be back!!

Anti-Bullying Week 2022  

Bullying affects millions of lives and can leave people feeling hopeless. But it doesn’t have to be this way. If we challenge it, we can change it. Our topic this half term in PSHE is all about ‘Celebrating Difference’. It focuses on our similarities and differences and teaches about diversity. The children learn to accept everyone’s right to ‘difference’. There is a huge focus in these sessions on anti-bullying, including cyber bullying.

In recognition of this, on Monday 14^th November, we invite the whole school to wear Odd Socks to highlight the fact that we are all unique! Look out for your teacher’s odd socks too!

Reception Class

In Reception, we have been learning all about Bonfire night! We have created beautiful pieces of artwork depicting fireworks, we used chalks, paints and glitter to create our masterpieces. We discussed the story of Bonfire Night and how the king was saved from Guy Fawkes. The children then explored the sounds of fireworks and began to write down onomatopoeia words such as 'bang', 'zoom' and 'pop'. Jasmine said 'Fireworks are so bright and colourful, they go bang up in the sky'. Jimmy said 'Guy Fawkes tried to hurt the King, but he didn't get to him'. 

Year 1

Year 1 were very lucky to have poet Cheryl Moskowitz visit them on Monday. Each class had a workshop with Cheryl where we shared and collected all of our ideas on Autumn and Winter. We looked at the difference in the weather and discussed some of the animals that may hibernate in Winter.  Here are some photos from our experience with Cheryl: 

This week it is Road Safety week. We discussed how we can keep safe when crossing roads, especially now that the weather is darker. We looked at different coats and spoke about which colour coats were best. We thought that those with reflective strips were most effective because drivers can easily see us. We then did some role play and practised crossing the road safely. We remembered to stop, look and listen. 

Year 2

This week Year 2 have continued with our ‘Remembrance’ Topic during our art lessons.

We have be learning about perspective and how objects further away appear smaller.  Using paint, we recreated the poppy fields from World War I with larger poppies in the foreground and smaller ones in the background.  The pupils did an amazing job, as you can see below:

As part of Road Safety Week, Year 2 have also been designing bicycle helmets that are very bright in order for cars to notice them.

The designs looked great and would definitely keep children safe while cycling.

Year 3 

This week was Road Safety week. Year 3 discussed in their classes the different safety features they may see outside school and the purpose of each of these features. The children were then taken on a short trip outside school in search of any features that act to keep us safe in our local area. The children walked in pairs, wearing high visibility jackets. They were stopped at several points so they could use their clipboards and add marks to their tally chart when they noticed a safety feature. We then discussed in class the safety features they spotted and improved our understanding of how they are used to keep us safe on our roads. 

Year 5 

This term, Year 5 started their new Computing unit, Programming music using Scratch! During our Computing lessons this term, we used the application Scratch to create our own music programmes. Using different code blocks, we explored Scratch independently and used basic sound commands and loops to create our own music soundtracks. We made sure to check for debugging simple errors in our code. We then planned a soundtrack programme, by solving problems by decomposing them into smaller parts. To do this, we used sequence, selection, and repetition in programs; working with variables and various forms of input and output. Finally, we played and performed in solo and ensemble contexts. It was important to improvise, whilst composing music for a range of purposes. Our theme: Space, allowed us to ensure we used a high-pitch range of sounds to give our theme of music depth, intonation and tone. 

Road safety

As part of Road Safety Week, Year 5 discussed the importance of Road Safety and how we must ensure to keep safe as both pedestrians, cyclists and car passengers. 

We learnt that one of the Sustainable Development Goals is that by 2030, the UK hopes to provide access to safe, affordable, accessible and sustainable transport systems for all and improving road safety.

We discussed the benefits, hazards and safety measures for common types of transport. We spoke about the importance of road signs and tested our knowledge. We also discussed how road safety signs made by children for adults to see when driving can be more impactful than the generic signs we see. Considering this, we made our very own posters sharing the importance of road safety and reducing our speed. 

Year 6 

Road Safety Week

As part of Road Safety Week, Year 6 thought about their journey to school and the hazards they may face. We especially focused on travelling alone as this may become a reality for many of them next year when moving onto Secondary School. We considered dangers we may encounter and how to overcome them.

We thought about one thing we would ensure we would always do and wrote them down:

After this, we watched road safety adverts, specifically targeted towards children, to see what was already being said. From this we then created our own. We had a range of outcomes, from dramatic reenactments, to raps, songs and dances and even news reporters.
