George Spicer newsletter - Thursday 4 November 2021

Welcome back to Autumn 2! We hope you've had a restful half-term week.  It's been lovely seeing the children back in school, refreshed and ready to learn.

School photos - individual photos were taken yesterday.  It was a busy turnout for the family photos after school - thank you for being so respectful to each other when waiting for your turn.  We will let you know when you are able to access the images online. Any orders placed before the deadline given by Churchbury Photographics will be delivered free of charge to the school in time for Christmas gifts. 

Cameras are live in Sketty Road - the times when you cannot drive on Sketty Road are 8.15-9.15am and 2.45-3.45pm. If you do drive during these times, unless exempt (you will need to contact School Streets at Enfield council to register your vehicle), you will incur a fine. Please aim to walk, cycle or scooter to school, but if you do need to drive, make use of the Park and Stride at TGI Fridays or the car park off Ladysmith Road.

School Values

This half-term our prominent school value will be kindness.  This is such an important value, one that can sometimes be found in short supply, because it is something that everyone in the world can be and do.  We are asking everyone to demonstrate this value as much as possible and as often as possible.  It is a super-power that we all posses but not all choose to use.  Please watch this video as your inspiration to be kind.

Reception

The theme of autumn has continued in Reception and we have been using the items that we have found to learn about pattern. We learnt about different types of patterns, some were repeating and some were made using criteria decided upon by the children. The children used lots of equipment to do this, even themselves!                                                                                                                            

Year 1

Year 1 had so much fun this week learning about how to use a Bee Bot. It is a robot that is also a Bee therefore it is called a Bee Bot. It needs to be programmed to work. You can make the Bee Bot move forwards, backwards, left or right by pressing the correct arrows. Do not forget to press ‘Go’ otherwise the Bee Bot won’t move. If you make a mistake when inputting the commands, you can debug the commands.

Year 2

This week in Year 2 we have started our two-week topic on Trench Warfare.  We took part in a 'senses walk'. We focused on our different senses to immerse ourselves into the topic further.  In Woodpecker class, we used our sense of smell to imagine the taste of SPAM, which was something the soldiers had to eat often. We also imagined the smell of burning from the gunfire and explosions. In Owl class, we used our sense of touch to get our hands muddy.  The trenches were a very dirty and muddy place so we imagined what it would be like to be there all the time. In Sparrow class, we looked at our sense of sight. We looked at different pictures of the trenches and used noun phrases to describe them. In Robin class, we used our sense of hearing to describe some of the noises the soldiers may have heard.  We listened to the sounds of gunfire and the rats squeaking.  Over the course of the next two weeks, we will be writing a diary entry from the perspective of a soldier. 

Year 3 

This week, Year 3 have been up in the computer room learning how to create codes and algorithms using the program Scratch! It has been so fun tinkering with the program and growing our understanding of building instructions to make an animation. We have made our characters move, talk and make noises!

Year 5 

Year 5 have made an excellent start to their learning this week as we delve even deeper into our topic, The Realm of The Khan! The children have shown a tremendous amount of zealous and enthusiasm when studying Genghis Khan and this is shown in their outstanding levels of writing. Similarly in Geography this week, our children have been eager to look at Mongolia and the human and physical features of the country. We began to draw our own map of Mongolia and using atlases, created our own keys to show these human and physical features. Also, we discussed how to use a key, cardinal points (compass) and lines of longitude and latitude.

In the week before half term, Mrs Southgate took some of our Year 5 children to take part in a Creativity in Nature Project! The children had the opportunity to explore the nature and wildlife in Bush Hill Park. Here, they searched the area and chose the best places for signs to be put to help teach locals about the park. Throughout the course of the project, they will be designing and making signposts in the park, helping to raise awareness of the wildlife that can be observed within the area. They will also be creating a trail leading to the Wildlife Garden, so that other children can explore too! Well done to the children that joined Mrs Southgate - you were all excellent role models for our school and your ideas and creativity were greatly appreciated!  

Year 6 

This week, for our Geography Fieldwork, we imagined we were Mr Roberts and planned a route for his class of Year 2 children to use to get to Bush Hill Park. 

We walked from Kimberley Gardens to Bush Hill Park and discussed what potential hazards there may be for the Year 2 class. We also discussed how we could overcome these hazards and what we would, as teachers, need to have in place to protect our Year 2 children. 

Edible Garden offerings

These are the beans that were planted in spring that have been harvested. Quite a bounty!  They have been given to Year 5 to taste as these children planted them in Year 4.

Reception admissions 2022

If your child was born between 1 September 2017 and 31 August 2018, you will need to apply for a primary school place by 15 January 2022.  The online system is now open for applications: www.eadmissions.org.uk.
