Reception

Happiness Week

Reception kicked off happiness week by sharing some happiness stories together. As the weather is so wonderful and seems to make us all happy, we have enjoyed our fruit time together as a year group this week and we've really enjoyed time together. We spoke about being bucket fillers and bucket dippers. Ask us what this means, and we can tell you how to fill someone's bucket with good things!

Library Visits

Reception have been enjoying their visits to the library recently. We have learnt about the many different things that happen at a library and who the library can help. We were free to browse the books and learnt how to put some away in the right places. Atlas said, "Look at this information book about Romans. Can we take it back to school?". Keshvi enjoyed looking at the books too, "I've found a unicorn book. Can I read it here?". We signed up for our own library card so we can choose books to bring back to school with us. This week we're enjoying a few Easter books and a book about washing our hands. We must remember to look after them so we can return them. We can't wait to visit again soon.

Year 1

Year 1 have been having lots or fun in Maths this week. They have been learning about grouping. Some of the items they grouped were, apples, cubes, teddy bear counters and dienes. They focused on grouping in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. Some children challenged themselves by grouping in 3’s and 4’s. They then represented their groups using a number sentence. Children worked very hard and enjoyed their learning. They look forward to building on their knowledge after Easter. We wish all children and parents a restful break.

Year 2

This week in Year 2 we have been focussing on our Science topic ‘See how it grows’. We planted our broad beans last week and discussed how to ensure they grow successfully. They needed water, light and a suitable temperature. As part of our growing we have carried out a test, starving one broad bean of light and the other of water to see what would happen. We have been carefully observing the progress of our broad beans and already seen some fantastic results!

We have also been sorting plants into suitable climates for them to grow.

For our greater depth challenge we discussed why strawberries only grow in the UK during Spring and Summer.

Year 3

In Year 3 we have been doing some observational drawing of a Roman face pot. These clay pots were used to store the ashes of somebody once they had passed away. They were also used for storing water and other foods. We created a first draft of our sketch, looking at proportion by folding our piece of paper to help us get the right shape and size. After Easter we will evaluate our sketches and have another go, thinking about how we can improve them ready for painting.

Year 4

In continuation of our Medieval Monarchs topic, in History we have been learning about what happened to the throne after the death of Edward IV. Our focus this week was on a wonderful piece of art called 'The Princes in the Tower' by John Everett Millais in the 1500's. This piece of art is allegedly the last image of Edward V and Richard who were the sons of Edward IV.

The children explored this piece of art by analysing the different features used in the painting and had discussions about the portrayal of the two sons, who were locked away in the Tower of London ahead of Edward's coronation that never happened.  We then shared our different theories about what could have happened in the Tower of London, who was responsible and how their mother Elizabeth Woodville would have felt about their disappearance.

In English this week, we started writing our art critiques about The Princes in the Tower. We wrote about how the artist portrayed the two boys, the colours used, body language and facial expressions.

To end our Dreams and Goals unit in PSHE, we discussed a scenario in groups about being assertive. We shared strategies on how to be assertive when faced with difficult situations, disagreements with friends and how to support others around us who may not feel confident when experiencing tricky situations.

In PSHE to celebrate happiness week we created Happiness poems using personification, with inspiration from the book The Horse the boy and the Mole by Charlie Mackesy.

Year 5

Happiness Week!

Last week, George Spicer celebrated happiness as part of this half term's Mental Health Week! Our Year 5 children brought in photographs and images from home to create their own collages of what to them is the, 'key to happiness!' Take a look at some of their incredible collages that they finished earlier this week!

Geography fieldwork!

This week, Year 5 analysed and evaluated their findings from their fieldwork to Enfield Playing Fields and Bush Hill Park park. Our criteria was to find a suitable local area for Miss Dawson and Miss Foster to walk their dogs. In previous lessons, we were given a checklist on what to look for in both areas and had analysed maps beforehand to give us a better understanding of the local area, before going out in the field. This week, we began by referring back to our criteria and analysing the data we collated. We discussed the potential of both areas: Enfield Playing Fields was a wide open space, away from deep water and is not very busy. Bush Hill Park was suitable as it had more fenced areas and dog waste bins were provided. We also analysed the potential hazards of both areas, with Enfield Playing Fields was the amount of rubbish and use of skateboards and scooters in the area. At Bush Hill Park, we noticed the area was used as a shortcut and therefore, was a very popular area. We also analysed how we could record the data and how if we were to complete the fieldwork again, we would want to interview more local people in both areas to have their opinions taken into account, as well as our own observations and findings. We also discussed the proposal of Enfield Council hoping to build 3,500 homes in the next 10 years and the positive and negative implications this would have on the local people. We discussed how it could prohibit Global Goal 15 - Life On Land, as it would mean many of these green belt open areas we use for leisure/ dog walking etc. would be built upon, meaning our opportunity to enjoy open spaces (such as the two we visited) for our own physical and mental well-being would be at risk. Well done to Year 5 for your fantastic discussions during our fieldwork topic and the enthusiasm and maturity you have shown!

Year 6

History - World War II - Battle of Britain

In our History immersion lesson this week, we looked at how Hitler had decided to invade Britain, but knew that in order to do so he would need to command the skies over Britain to launch an invasion across the channel. However, Hugh Dowding and the RAF were determined to stop Hitler's Luftwaffe at all costs. In our lesson, we looked at the key decisions made by both sides (Germany and Britain) and we ranked them in terms of whether it was a good move or a bad move, discussing the impact each decision had on the countries.

In our History lesson, we focused on the Battle of Britain and how this battle was the first major battle fought entirely in the air, where the RAF defended the UK from Nazi Germany’s air force, the Luftwaffe. The combat-experienced Luftwaffe hoped to conquer Britain easily but the RAF proved itself powerful with its Supermarine Spitfire. The determined pilots worked hard preparing, flying and fighting the intense battle. In this lesson, we looked at analysing primary sources, explaining how the RAF pilots defended the UK. Below are some examples of our work:

For our Greater Depth challenge, we discussed Global Goal 3 (Good Health and

Wellbeing) as throughout the Battle of Britain, the mental strain of constantly fighting against one another was mounting on the British pilots. We discussed how this would have affected the pilots' mental health.
