Reception

This week Reception have been reading 'My shadow is pink' by Scott Stuart.  The children have been exploring their shadows outside, and thinking about what makes their shadows bigger or smaller.  The book explores the theme of being yourself and that being different is ok.  The children thought about how they felt at the beginning of Reception, and they wrote a letter to the new children coming next year to tell them what it will be like in Reception and that they should be themselves.

'My shadow is a wand because I like magic' Kobe in Poppy

'My shadow is short; my friend's shadow is tall Harriet in Daffodil.

'My shadow is a dinosaur' Dejlin in Daffodil.

Year 1

Our recent Maths Fun Day was a fantastic success, filled with excitement, learning, and lots of smiles! The children were each given Β£1 to spend across a range of fun and interactive stalls, helping them practise real-life money skills in an enjoyable way.

There were plenty of activities to choose from, including scoring goals, knocking over targets, and hook the duck! Each game required a small fee to play, encouraging the children to carefully think about how they managed their money.

It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm as they made choices, counted their coins, and most importantly, had lots of fun! A big well done to all the children for taking part so positively.

Year 2

Year 2 are thoroughly enjoying their music lessons, this term, not only have they been learning about the different notes for reading music, but also playing glockenspiels using this skill.

Their singing is sounding wonderful in preparation for the year 2 performance. The children are busy practising and can't wait to share their learning with their loved ones in a couple of weeks.

Year 3

Year 3: Science – Flowering plant life cycle.

In Science, Year 3 have been learning all about the life cycle of a flowering plant. They’ve been busy honing their recording skills and using scientific language to describe and label the different parts of a flower. To build on their learning, we dissected a flower so the children could have a closer look at each part and develop their skills even further. It was a great hands-on experience, and the class showed lots of curiosity and enthusiasm throughout. In future lessons, we’ll use what we’ve learnt to help explain the process of pollination.

Year 4

Writing

In Year 4, we have been reading 'The Matchbox Diary' by Paul Fleishman. We had the opportunity to bring in three of our own important and special objects to then write our own mini-autobiography. The children brought in a range of beautiful things they had collected and had very mature discussions about the memories these items hold. The writing produced was also of a very high level and included paragraphs, lots of expanded noun phrases to describe the objects and conjunctions to explain why they were important.

Maths

In Maths, we have been learning about the properties of quadrilaterals and we explored these by making shapes using spaghetti and blue tac. We worked in groups measuring out the spaghetti as some quadrilaterals need to have equal length sides.  We then assembled our shape using blue tac to stick the sides together. We experimented with rotating the shapes and found out what happened to the angles when the shape was squashed. We had a lot of fun!

Year 5

History – Cordoba: City of Light

In History, Year 5 continued their learning about Cordoba: City of Light by investigating why the Islamic Empire expanded so quickly. The children explored a range of factors that contributed to the Islamic conquests and worked collaboratively to sort them in order of importance. They then grouped the factors under the headings of fighting, ruling and faith, discussing how each helped explain the success of the Islamic armies.

The class showed excellent historical thinking as they justified their ideas using evidence and debated which factors were most significant. They were particularly fascinated by the story of Abd al-Rahman, the fugitive prince who escaped danger and eventually established Muslim rule in Spain, helping to shape the future of Cordoba.

Year 6

In Design and Technology this half-term, Year 6 have begun their textiles unit and have shown great enthusiasm for learning a range of sewing techniques. Building on skills introduced in previous years, the children have practised threading needles, tying knots, and using running stitch and back stitch before progressing to blanket stitch. It has been wonderful to see their confidence and resilience grow as they develop greater control and accuracy with each new skill. The children are looking forward to applying these techniques in the coming weeks as they design and make their own pencil cases.

We have also continued to practise for our end-of-year performance of The Lion King. The dances and scenes are coming together well, and the children have been working extremely hard to learn their lines, songs and choreography. Information regarding costumes has now been sent home, so please begin sending costume items into school as soon as possible.

In Science, Year 6 have been studying electricity. The children have revised their knowledge of drawing circuit diagrams and have been experimenting with a range of electrical circuits. Most recently, they carried out an investigation into how the brightness of a bulb can be affected by changing a circuit. They discovered that increasing the voltage makes a bulb brighter, while increasing the resistance makes it dimmer. The children enjoyed applying their scientific knowledge through practical investigation and discussion.

Sports at George Spicer

It has been an incredible week of sport for George Spicer this week. We began on Monday with our first trip to Lee Valley Athletics Centre to take part in an athletics festival where the children had the opportunity to take part in a variety of activities on a professional track, with the support of trained athletes.

Wednesday saw us competing in the annual District Athletics competition. Mr Spong and I were incredibly proud of all the children who raced. The sportsmanship, resilience and determination shown by all the athletes was commendable. It also turned out to be a very successful afternoon with first place finishes from Jude, Demi, Natalia, Daisy and the Year 3 relay team. More importantly though, all the children did their best and at George Spicer, that is all we ask!

We finished off the week with the Mini-Marathon today. Again, it was such a wonderful moment to see the whole school taking part in the event and encouraging one another despite the warm British sunshine.
