Journeys to and from school

This is an important message regarding the safety of our pupils on their journeys to and from school.

It is wonderful to see so many of our children and families walking, riding, or scooting to school. This is not only great for their health and the environment, but it also helps to reduce congestion around the school site. However, I must emphasise the need for increased vigilance and care during these journeys.

Sadly, we have had a number of injuries and near-misses in recent weeks, particularly when passing driveways and crossing roads. The new road layout on the other side of Southbury Road requires special attention when crossing. I cannot stress enough the importance of keeping your children close and being extremely cautious in these areas.

I would also like to address the issue of parking.  We have had regular discussions with all parents about parking respectfully, and I urge all of you to do the same, be it in the roads around school or in the Park-and-Stride car parks. Please be mindful of others and ensure that you are not obstructing access or compromising the safety of our pupils and their families.  We have a number of families with Blue Badges which allow them to park on yellow lines, so please be mindful and respectful of that entitlement.

At George Spicer Primary School, the safety and well-being of our community is of the utmost importance. We are committed to working together to ensure that everyone can arrive and depart from school safely and with ease.

I thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding in this matter. If you have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.

Parent Governor Update

I am delighted to announce that Henna Kashmiri and Gillian Curtis will become Parent Governors at the next Full Governing Body meeting and serve a 4-year term.  In the end there was no need for an election as the other initially interested parties withdrew their applications.  Congratulations to both and we are sure they will be a positive voice in the continued improvement of our school.

Headteacher Tea Parties

Mr Spong entertained 24 children from across the school who had achieved 5 Stars of the Week for various reasons including being kind to friends on the playground, producing some excellent writing, and for always trying their best.  Well done to those who attended and hopefully this will inspire many more to achieve their 5th star in the final half-term of the year.

Ambassador News

The ambassadors would like to inform everyone, that after a tough vote, the KS2 children have decided to adopt .......... a giant panda! We look forward to receiving the WWF welcome pack, so we can find out more about how we are helping save the panda and how to support endangered species.

New Ambassadors for next year

We are well underway recruiting our new Ambassadors for next year.  Our Ambassadors have an important role in our school community and represent the voice of the children in their class.  Those children who wanted to be considered prepared and delivered a speech to their class.  The quality of the speeches were extremely high.  Well done to everyone who had a go.

The 3 children with the most votes have participated in interviews.  Mrs Bugliari and Mrs Allen have tough decisions to make deciding who will be the new Ambassadors and will announce after Half Term so watch this space.

Reception

This week in Reception we have been reading "And Tango makes Three" a wonderful story that follows the journey of 2 penguins called Roy and Silo and how they build a family together. The children were excited to discover an egg had arrived in our classroom! We decided to independently write letters to Roy and Silo to explain to them how to look after their egg. We discussed penguin habitats and experimented with creating our own penguin habitats made from ice. A child from Daffodil class said "Did you know that penguins and polar bears don't share the same habitat?"

Year 1

This week in Geography in Year 1 we have been learning about physical and human features of our local area. The children went on a walk around the playground and were looking for things that were physical and human.

Adam ‘ Tress grow because the seeds drop and it goes in the soil, it rains and then it grows.’ ‘The slide is a human feature because the it was made by a man.’

Layla ‘The  humps in the playground were made by a man.’

Joseph ‘The slide  is not living because it is plastic.’ ‘Trees have roots they get nutrients from the soil to feed.’

Year 2

In Year 2 the children have been exploring the properties of different materials. The children tried to manipulate the objects to see if they would stretch, bend, twist or could be squashed. Working in teams they used appropriate vocabulary to describe the properties of the materials.

David said "The wooden block is a rigid object, I can't bend or stretch it."

Sophia said " The plastic ruler is flexible because it bends a bit but not stretchy like the elastic loom band."

Year 3

Year 3 have been working on their clarifying skills by using clues in the text to help them understand the meaning of a word. They are also able to apply their spelling knowledge to see if any prefixes, suffixes or root words give them a greater understanding of a word. From reading the texts on volcanoes and weather this week, they have learnt the meaning of the following words - erupting, ash, gushes and cumulus.

In addition, Year 3 have been looking at a range of different homophones and their meanings. They have gained greater confidence on knowing when to use which homophone correctly in their writing. They also know the difference between a homophone and homonym.

Year 4

My Young Mind Enfield (MYME), which is part of Enfield CAMHS, have been visiting year 4 and delivering insightful workshops all about emotional wellbeing. We often think about how we look after our bodies, but what about our brains? So far, the children have been learning about how our brains work and what we can do to help ourselves feel calm and in control. They all have workbooks which will work as a reminder of all the skills that they're learning so that they can also share them with friends and family! Strategies include Deep Belly Breathing, 5 Finger Breathing and the Palm Push. This week's lesson was about how the 'zones of regulation' can be used to help communicate how we are feeling. We are so proud of how they have spoken up in these sessions about their feelings and experiences.

Year 5

In Year 5, we are very excited to have started our new writing topic - Beowulf, by Michael Morpurgo. The original 'epic poem' contained a whole host of kennings and used alliteration frequently.  We decided to explore the different kennings used and carried out a matching activity, linking the hyphenated nouns (kennings) to modern day terms. This served as our topic glossary. We have also enjoyed writing letters to The King; pleading and advising him to act hastily, in destroying Grendel, before it's too late!

During our Maths lessons, we have been busy solving perimeter and area problems. We have calculated the perimeters of a variety of closed shapes and also calculated the area of quadrilaterals and compound shapes. Furthermore, we have applied our understanding to real-life problems and challenged ourselves by finding the length and width of missing sides when we are given the perimeter and area of the shape first.

Year 6

In PSHE, the children have been discussing mental health and managing our own feelings about ourselves. The lessons are based around the book The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy. They discussed how important it is to be kind to ourselves sometimes and how sometimes it is OK to not be OK. Based on the book the children created their own illustrations and motivational quotes and phrases. They showed such a sensitive understanding of how to look after ourselves and how to treat ourselves the same as we treat those we love. These are some of the wonderful pieces of work the children produced.

Soccer Aid for UNICEF have invited pupils to design the t-shirt that child mascots will wear at Soccer Aid for UNICEF 2025 on Sunday 15th June at Old Trafford, Manchester. The winner will also join as one of the mascots, walking onto the pitch on matchday alongside the Soccer Aid for UNICEF players. Here are our entries below. Good luck everyone!
