George Spicer newsletter - Thursday 17th June 2021

Covid update - Although there has been some easing of Covid restrictions and lock down measures, the current lockdown has been extended to the 19th July due to the prevalence of the Delta variant and its possible likelihood to affect children and spread more easily.

Last day of term - Wednesday 21st July - normal finish time and there will be no After School Club.

Sports Day - we are adapting this event to meet current covid restriction guidance, so regrettably this means that parents will not be able to attend.

Thank you and well done to the FoGS who raised £1470 in recent weeks during their virtual Summer Fun Day activities. (Full details are below in the newsletter).

Reception Class

This week Reception harvested the lovely lettuce they have been growing as part of the Edible Gardens Project.  A big delivery was made to the Kitchen who served it up for lunch. Delicious!!

Are you growing anything at home? We would love to see your gardens. Please send us your pictures to feature on our newsletter.

Year 1

This week, there was a crash landing in the playground!  Mr Burr sent a letter to Year 1 to investigate what had happened.  The children went to look for clues and wrote their own story about what they think may have caused the crash.  They thought about who or what could have been in the spaceship.  Also, what happened when the crash had gone.

Year 2

This week we had a visit from a company called Wild Fangs. They showed us five different animals that are native to different places in the world.

We all had the opportunity to stroke a Boa Constrictor. Daniyal said that it felt like jelly!

We met an Asian Forest Scorpion. We were amazed when we saw it change colour under the ultra-violet light. We also met a Chilean Rose Tarantula.  Did you know that when it gets scared, it flicks all of its little hairs at you?

Some of us had the opportunity to hold an African Pygmy hedgehog on our laps. We had to keep quiet so that it wouldn't roll up into a ball.

Year 2 - tomatoes

Look at our garden grow! Our troughs have been built and our tomatoes have been replanted.  They look a bit sorry for themselves this week because of the heat but hopefully they will perk up and we can harvest some lovely, juicy tomatoes.

Year 3

Year 3 have enjoyed their drama sessions this week, pretending to be Roman Gladiators. They were relieved to find out that no one was killed at the end of this battle, as often the loser would be killed. Over the next couple of weeks they will write a newspaper report based on the fight between Verus and Priscus. We look forward to reading their newspaper reports.

Year 4

This week, Year 4 have been learning all about relationships in PSHE. Each class discussed statements and decided whether they agreed or disagreed. All of the teachers were incredibly proud of their maturity and respect for each other. Well done!

Year 5

This week in art we have been continuing our learning on Zentangle which is a pattern making process. We are using lines, curves and dots to recreate an image of the goddess, Isis. We are in the initial stages of our design process and are reflecting and evaluating on our work before we begin our final piece.

Year 6

Computing (Tinkering)

This week, Year 6 have really enjoyed tinkering in Computing. They typed commands and instructions, helping them develop their coding skills. The children explored tinkering and found that the precise the instruction given, the better the command will be carried out.

Miss Grant’s Reading Challenge

Hope you enjoyed the poem challenge last week! You can watch a poem being read by Michael Rosen called Chocolate here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BxQLITdOOc

This week’s challenge is to go on a reading hunt around your house. What things can you read in your house? You will be surprised by how many things there are, for example cereal boxes, food packaging, newspapers and more! Please send any photos of your reading hunt to primrose@georgespcier.enfield.sch.uk

Children's Recommendations

Reception

Primrose – Zak – Children’s Illustrated Animal Atlas by DK – I like this book because it has so many animals. This book makes me want to go on holiday because the animals are on different continents and I want to go there and see them. It has my favourite animal in it, the Komodo Dragon.

Daffodil – Joyce – Olaf’s Night Before Christmas by Disney – I like it when Santa gives Olaf a warm hug. When Santa comes out of the chimney Olaf is happy. Olaf uses an icicle instead of a telescope.

Bluebell – Ezra – Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers – I love penguins who live in the South Pole. I love the cuddles and the hugs. I like when the boy realised the penguin was not lost, he was lonely.

Snowdrop – Nailah – Super Sid the Silly Sausage Dog by Sam Lloyd –I like the dog because he looks like a sausage and his nose is like a ball. He can do handstands and he can fly. He howls at the moon and I like the noise. I like it when he jumps over the bridge.

Year 1

Willow – Ben – Little Feminist by Emily Kleinman and Lydia Ortiz – It is a book I can read. I like the colours. It has things about history.

Elm – Kelvin – Stuck by Oliver Jeffers - t is funny and it makes me laugh. Lots of things get stuck in a tree. It is silly! Fire trucks don’t go in trees.

Oak – Sophia – Pups Save Ryder’s Robot by Parragon Books Ltd – I like the story because it had Sky in it. I like Ryder making his robot. I like Mayor Goodway’s tulips.

Year 2

Sparrow – Damir – Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl – Fantastic Mr Fox lives under a tree and he wants to steal the farmer’s food. They set up a plan to catch him! I like Fantastic Mr Fox because he is very sneaky and he escapes from the farmer’s plans lots of times. Year 2 will love this book because it is fascinating and fun to read.

Owl – Theo – The Christmasaurus and the Winter Witch by Tom Fletcher – I like this book because it is mysterious. My favourite character is Christmasaurus. You should read this book if you like to be surprised.

Robin – Kayla Mai – Paddington Marches On by Michael Bond – I love this book because Paddington does silly things to Mr curry. My favourite character is Paddington because he is funny. You should read this book if you want to learn from your mistakes and have fun!

Woodpecker –  Ty – Claude Lights! Camera! Action! By Alex T Smith – It is about going to the gym. After the book you can watch the movies. If you like dogs, you should read this book.

Year 3

Apache - Benjamin - Slugs and Snails by Theresa Greenaway - It has lots of fun facts and pictures. It teaches you things you would never ordinarily know about these creatures.

Year 4

Heracles - Amena-Santi - Dog Man by Dav Pilkey 'The creator of Captain Underpants'
This book is about a Cop and a dog, I liked it because it is quite funny and if you go to certain pages there are pictures that look like they are moving. I would recommend this book!

Year 5

Ra - Sam - The Legend of Podkin One-Ear by Kieran Larwood. I like the book because it has a great storyline - it has action and is fantasy but it does not have much magic. Podkin is my favourite character as his development throughout the story is very admirable. I think this book is suitable for children ages 9-15 who are interested in mythical stories.

Year 6

Lancasters - Ved - Black Beauty by Anna Sewell. The story gives an in-depth view of humans from a different viewpoint, the viewpoint of a horse.  This book is set in an earlier period of time. The story makes us think about the way we treat and see horses as it shows cruelty to animals which used to be carried out on horses. This violates our Global Goal number 15, as this goal focuses on preserving life on land, however, as we read on in this book some of the horses are mistreated. I recommend this book to Year 5 children as we all have read this book in our reading lessons, and really enjoyed it.

Sensory Garden

Our Sketty Road Sensory Garden is almost finished and ready to be used by children at playtimes.  It is designed to be a quiet and calm space where children can relax and be surrounded by nature.  The Ambassadors met with Mrs Allen last week to clarify the rules and expectations and made posters. The children are very excited to use this area.

A big thank you to FoGs and Waitrose who provided funding.

As beautiful as it is, the Sensory Garden is closed to parents before and after school.  At home time, please do not let younger siblings use the area.  Thank you in advance for your support and co-operation.
