George Spicer Newsletter - 22nd November 2024

On Friday 22nd November, Feryal Clark visited the school.  She met with the School Ambassadors who grilled her on why she became an MP, tough decisions made by the Prime Minister she didn't agree with and some of the best decisions she made which have made a positive impact on others.  Road safety is one of her priorities and passions and she shared that she was the brains behind the School Streets scheme, which we are proud to be part of.  She has promised to be an ear and voice for our children so the Ambassadors will make sure to include her in their future campaigns.

Feryal also met with the whole of KS2 in 2 assemblies, where she answered questions about what inspired her to become an MP and what life as an MP is like.

Road Safety Week - The whole school participated in activities, lessons and assemblies as part of Road Safety Week.

The School Ambassadors did us proud and led assemblies at both Kimberley Gardens and Sketty Road.  They spoke clearly and confidently and the gave excellent advice to the school about how to be safe on our streets;

Wear brightly coloured and reflective clothing.

Wear a helmet when scootering or cycling to school.

Younger children should hold an adult's hand when crossing the road.

Always wear a seatbelt in a car and use a booster if you are shorter than 135cm tall.

A big thank you to Enfield Council who provided us with a bag of prizes that have been given out as part of the Golden Travel Raffle.  Children who travelled to school safely were entered into a class raffle. Congratulations to all those who came home with a prize and well done to everyone who made an extra effort to walk, wear a helmet or use our park and stride locations.  Thank you for helping to keep our local community safer.

Breakfast and After-School Club Arbor Payments- A kind reminder if your child attends Breakfast and After-School Club please ensure that your account is paid in advance and up-to-date.

Arbor app - Just a reminder, you can view your child's punctuality and attendance on Arbor. Punctuality is key - due to our soft start, the children get an opportunity to say hello and talk to their friends at the beginning of the day – all vital skills for communication and developing friendships.   We aim for 96% attendance and we are aware that young children, especially in the winter months, pick up lots of bugs. Your child’s learning in Reception is linked and builds day by day. Therefore, being in school every day is crucial!

Reception

Reception: Road Safety Week.

This week, Reception has been discussing ways of staying safe on the road. Kira in Snowdrop Class said, “You look left and right and cross when the light is green.” Snowdrop class unanimously said that you must hold your adult’s hand. Defne in Primrose Class said, “You can cross the road safely by pressing the button, holding your mummy’s or daddy’s hand. By looking left and right, by listening and looking and crossing the road on the Zebra Crossing.” The children also put this into practise by pretending to be traffic lights for the bikes, and also stopping, looking and listening before crossing the cycle path in the Reception playground. They understood the importance of wearing bright clothes or reflective strips to keep themselves safe and to be seen by the other road users. Some of the children even won a reflective star for their fantastic contributions and applying their understanding of being safe on the road. Well done to all the Reception children for continuing Being Safe!

Year 1

As part of Road Safety week, the children in Year 1 learnt how to keep safe when crossing the road.  They created a road in their classroom and practised stopping, looking and listening.  H said "I use the zebra crossing to be safe.  [At a traffic light], when there's a red light you stop and when there's a green light, you go."

Year 2

This week we have been learning about Parliament as part of Parliament Week. They had great fun learning about our democracy and what happens in the House of Commons. To share their understanding, the pupils created bunting with many facts they had learnt.

Year 3

Road Safety

As part of Road Safety Week, Year 3 looked at how we walk to school. We explored this question:

We discussed different options Mr Spong could do to help keep us safe and linked this to Article 6 of the UNCRC: Life, Survival and Development.

We then looked at different ways that Enfield is keeping us safe when we cross the roads.

We will be taking a walk around the school grounds soon to see which of these road safety features we can see.

We also have been learning about Parliament and will be sharing more about this in next week’s newsletter.

Year 4

This week in PSHE we had a very interactive lesson on Road Safety. We were told the laws and that if we measure under 135 cm we should still use booster seats. Additionally we were told that the recommendation is to have a booster seat until you are 150cm tall. We were given different scenarios and explored the importance of wearing a seat belt and being focused whilst travelling by car. Damien ‘I really enjoyed checking our heights to see if we need to use a booster seat.’ Ava ‘My favourite part was watching the video showing the importance of a booster seat.’

Additionally it is Parliament week. UK Parliament Week (UKPW) is an annual event, spreading the word about what Parliament is.

For Parliament week we explored what happens in the Houses of Parliament. We also had an opportunity to draw our very own Big Ben and decorate it. We learnt that they have red and green seats in the Houses of Parliament.

Did you know that the UK Parliament is made up of two groups of people?

They are called:

• The House of Commons

• The House of Lords

The two Houses in UK Parliament work together to:

• make laws

•  check what the Government is doing

We have really enjoyed our week.

Year 5

This week Year 5 have enjoyed Parliament Week 2024. The children have shown a keen interest in how The House of Commons and The House of Lords operate. We have been looking at clarifying the meanings of such words as: 'constituency', 'democracy', 'The Elizabeth Tower' and 'manifesto'. We created information posters to explain the inner workings of Parliament and linked them to our UNCRC Charter. Later in the week, we'll be heading to the polling station to cast our votes on a topical issue that relates to our current unit of writing- Robot Girl by Malorie Blackman.

To continue our busy week, we've been learning about Road Safety, as part of Road Safety Week 2024. We have developed an understanding of how to be an independent traveller, in view of moving to Year 6 and beyond. We have planned an independent journey to school from our homes, identifying all the potential hazards and safety measures in place. We have also been trying our upmost to walk, cycle or scoot to school as part of our eco-friendly travel promise. Well done to all those pupils who have managed to accomplish this and braved the 'Arctic' conditions we've experienced this week!

Year 6

This week it was the turn of Mumbai and Lagos to visit Enfield Mosque. The children were able to explore different parts of the Mosque and see for themselves where communities come together to learn, support each other and pray. They were also able to look at some of the working parts of the Mosque and we had a team quiz about all the things we were told about. The children were also lucky enough to sit under the dome of the Mosque and experience for themselves how the dome amplifies sound.

In our RW lessons this week the children finished learning about Islam with a final lesson on how Muslim's get guidance. We focused on the commandments guiding Muslims, including being kind to parents, particularly in their old age, always keeping promises and avoiding gossip and slander. The children acted out what these commandments might look like in everyday life and discussed which ones were still relevant in our modern world. They spoke about how many of these commandments are common themes in other religions and how they also relate to our school Four B's.
