School Tours - Reception 2025 - 2026 Starters

Reception

The new Reception children started this week at George Spicer and have settled in beautifully. They have been busy learning all their teachers names and making new friends both inside and outside the classroom. We have started to learn all the new routines required at school such as which class we are in, where to hang our coats and place our water bottles. The children have introduced themselves to each other through some fun circle games and even had a visit from Coach Kieron who taught them some exciting PE skills! All the children have been happy to participate in the activities and we hope they are sharing all their achievements with you at home too!

Year 1

The children in Year 1 have enjoyed their new start to the academic year and are settling in well into their new classes.  They have been reading the book "Cave Baby" by Julia Donaldson and enjoyed exploring the role-play areas and continuous provision around the classroom.  AB used her knowledge of phonics to write "Stone Age make their caves with stones."  The children have also begun to record their learning in books.   They are all rising to the challenge of learning new rules, routines and knowing the expectations of Year 1.

Year 2

Year 2 have been settling into their new classes, making new friends and learning the routines of the day. The teachers in Year 2 would like to congratulate the children on their readiness to return to school and on showing everybody how to follow the 4 Be's at Kimberly Gardens. Well done Year 2! Each class have created their class charter and discussed examples of how to Be Kind, Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Sensible. We are looking forward to watching you grow this year and for all the fantastic learning to come!

Year 3

Year 3 found a surprise in one of the classrooms this week. We stumbled upon an unusual set up that looked like somebody’s living room. So, naturally, we decided to investigate.

We began by listing all the nouns we could see. We saw: binoculars, a map, old slippers, an arm chair, an empty suitcase and many more curious items.

Using what we could see, we posed some questions such as: Who does this belong to? Why do they have an empty suitcase out? What do they need the binoculars for?

We then, using the clues in the room, began to predict what type of person this could belong to. We are excited to learn more about this character and who they are as we continue our writing lessons.

Year 4

Over the week, Year 4 have been exploring what the word ‘freedom’ means to us. We looked at the phrase ‘free as a bird’ and had a conversation about why birds are seen as free. We also had an opportunity to look at different types of birds learnt some interesting facts about how they fly. We looked at some synonyms and antonyms for freedom. Some examples include liberty and independence. Examples of antonyms include imprisonment and captivity. We worked in tables to produce our own poem based on ‘freedom’. We then wrote our sentence on a strip of paper and decided the order of the poem. Finally, we added music to our poem and performed to our class.

Some examples of our sentences:

‘Liberty is going all around the gigantic world and back’. Joy

‘Freedom is when you are independent and making your own choices’. Blake

‘Freedom is when you are sleeping in a comfy bed and have no alarms to wake you up.’ Aine

‘Liberty is justice and fairness to all who deserve it.’ Matty

Year 5

The new Year 5s have settled in quickly to the new routines and expectations. We have been incredibly impressed with their maturity, passion for learning and their commitment to the 4Bs. This week we have started using our new 'Letterjoin' handwriting cursive script and we have been practicing wherever possible to show off our joins and flicks! We also performed short drama pieces and or freeze frames to demonstrate our school values. It was amazing what they could remember and how easy they found performing in front of each other!

We also began our new writing topic, using stimulus from the book ' The Man Who Walked Between the Towers' by Mordecai Gerstein. We found a mysterious bag full of interesting items. The children were able to use these strange items to piece together who the bag belonged to. We then developed our vocabulary and created sentences based around nouns, verbs, adverbs and adjectives. We even generated a range of different pronouns to vary the way we began our sentences.  Well done Year 5, an excellent start to the academic year. Keep up the good work!

Year 6

Year 6 have had an amazing start to their final year in Primary School. Their behaviour has been outstanding and they are clearly going to be great role models for the rest of the school. In class, the children have been thinking about their qualities that make up their identity and personality. They used symbols, colours and animals to represent themselves in their very own coat of arms. Lots of the children saw themselves as loyal, truthful, brave and ambitious. All excellent qualities to have. They also looked ahead and considered their hopes and dreams for the coming year, both in school and at home. Lots of children are aiming to improve their handwriting or maths. Other children want to work on their football skills in order to try and work towards a dream of becoming a professional footballer. All of the children spoke passionately about what they want to achieve. With such a great attitude the sky is the limit for their dreams and ambitions....

This week Year 6 were treated to an extremely dramatic and interactive version of the play 'Macbeth' by William Shakespeare. All the children were able to take part in the production. They helped to provide sound effects, answer questions about the characters and their motives, and they were all soldiers for the final battle scene between Macbeth and Macduff. It was incredibly dramatic and everyone cheered when the evil Macbeth was finally defeated. A few of the children were also invited onto the stage and played some of the main characters, such as King Malcolm, Fleance and Donalbain. The children were enthusiastic throughout and, even though there is some tricky dialogue in the play, showed great understanding about the plot and the characters as they answered questions from the drama troupe throughout the production. All the staff are eagerly looking forward to some excellent writing in lessons as we explore the story of Macbeth, Lady Macbeth and the consequences of their ambition...
