We were treated to a presentation about budgeting and gained invaluable information about how to be wise with our money. The children enjoyed working together to budget for a family outing, as well as calculating in groups to solve real-life mathematical problems. A big thank you to HSBC for facilitating these enriching sessions and for hosting such a memorable event.

Sky Blue Day

On Monday 15th July we will be holding a wear it blue day in memory of a cherished member of our school community.  The mother of one of our Year 6 children sadly passed away earlier in the year and we would like to hold a fundraising day in her honour.  We will be donating any funds raised to the Ruth Strauss Foundation which is a charity that believes that every family facing the death of a parent, should be offered professional emotional support to help prepare for their children’s futures.  I’m sure as parents ourselves and empathising with families going through the very worst of times this is a very worthy cause.  Let’s show some #SpicerSpirit and make it a blue Monday with a meaning!

Reception

This week in Reception we have enjoyed our HSBC money workshop. We were learning about the value of coins and explored addition with money. We spoke about the importance of saving our money, because we can use the money we save to buy things that we like that are of greater value. The children went on to explore writing their own number sentences using the coins that we explored during the workshop.

Also this week, we were lucky enough to have Year 6 helpers come and join us in Reception to support us in our learning. The Year 6 helpers were excellent role models for play and supported us with our reading, writing and maths activities.

Year 1

To consolidate their learning, last week the children in Year 1 were treated to an informative STEM workshop on vertebrates, run by one of our parents - Mrs Dean.   The children learnt lots of interesting facts and were able to do observational drawings of real skeletons, eggs and feathers.

Year 2

On Monday morning, Year 2 took part in a webinar about British Values. We had discussions about scenarios related to each one and were taught the phrase 'I really do matter' to help us remember individual liberty, rule of law, democracy, mutual respect and tolerance. The presenters set a challenge of what we can do this week to show these values. Amai from Sparrow class said "we can go to the buddy bench during break and lunch times to see if there is anyone who wants to join our game or needs help."

Year 2 have also been enjoying rehearsing and performing their assembly to their parents and carers. They have shown great enthusiasm, perseverance and confidence while working together as a team to bring their learning to life!

Year 3

Year 3 have started reading a new text titled Varjak Pak by SF Said. They have been using a range of reading comprehension skills to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the text and the main characters in the story (cats). They have also started their planning for a fantasy story inspired by Our Tower. During the week, they also got the wonderful opportunity to take part in a maths workshop led by HSBC which discussed the importance and benefits of how to use money wisely.

Year 4

HSBC came into our school for a workshop about budgets and money. We were informed about the importance of budgeting monthly to ensure that adults have enough money to pay their bills each month. Our year group discovered different ways of how to use money for household essentials.

For example:

-Gas   £82

-Electricity   £108

-water     £35

-Tv package £60

-Phone    £45

-Clothes.    £45

-Food.     £400

We really enjoyed learning about budgets and incomes and we understand that we some things we require are needs and some are wants. Our favourite part was when we were completing the budget sheet and guessing the cost of different items.

Thank you HSBC for coming into our school and teaching us about the value of money.

Year 4 have also been busy practicing their sewing skills for our DT project on purses. We learnt different techniques such as over stitch, running stitch and back stitch. We cannot wait to make our purses.

Year 5

This week Year 5 have been out and about in Enfield for their Geography field work. Field work involves doing geography in the real world. The children learned the difference between the study of human and physical geography and the meaning of terms such as urban, rural, population and urbanisation. We used maps to decide the best location for our study. The children were looking at places in the local area that would be suitable for bird watching and that would have the biggest variety of different types of birds. The criteria was to find locations that were wooded or had rivers, streams and ponds as these places would be more likely to have lots of birds. Once we located these places on a map, we conducted our fieldwork by making a tally and bar chart of the numbers of the different types of bird that we found. The children were surprised to see such a huge variety of different birds on the river although very saw very few birds in trees.

Year 6

Elections and Polls

Year 6 have had discussions about elections this week and looked at the reliability of polls. We discussed that a poll was a survey that is used to gauge an idea of how a country might vote.

Firstly, we looked at a poll and discussed what information we could learn from it. We then discussed how this could not be reliable depending on the group of people chosen to participate.

We were then told we lived in an area that had an election. There were two candidates: A and B. We were given our own character cards telling us not only how we would vote but also what we would tell others about how we were voting. We moved around the room to share what we wanted to.

Once we had time to talk to each other, we took a poll on who we thought would win. This showed Candidate B would win. However, some people weren’t honest in the poll or were secretive, so when we held our election, candidate A won.

From this we saw how polls can be misleading. We discussed whether we thought using polls was good or bad.

After this, we had a challenge to discuss how the world would be if:

1. 80 year olds ruled the world

2. 9 year olds ruled the world
