Quote of the week

'Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.' - Helen Keller

Attendance week ending 21/06/2024

Overall school = 94% Lates = 103

Best attendance: 1st Achilles 98.59% 2nd Apache 98.18% 3rd Navajo 97.81%

Punctuality: Well done to Odysseus and Osiris with 100% for punctuality.

Reporting Absences - Just a reminder, you must call or email every day if your child is absent. Please, when reporting absences, leave a message with your child's name, class and the reason for absence.

Lateness - The number of children arriving late in the mornings is high. Unfortunately, it is the same children repeatedly.  Gates close at 9am and learning starts promptly at this time.  If your child is 5 minutes late every day, this equates to nearly 3 whole days of missed learning, plus it’s disruptive for other children.  Please try to drop your child/children at least 5/10 minutes early to avoid this continuous lateness.

Reception

Reception had a Rooaaarsome day at school on Tuesday, as they had some very special visitors come to play! The children squealed in delight as Jam the T Rex and his helpers entered the school hall to teach us lots of facts about dinosaurs. Everyone was in amazement as we watched him stomp around looking for his chicken dinner! He was a very cheeky dinosaur who liked to play tricks on lots of the teachers too! We were then invited to create a mini movie using a green screen to simulate a dinosaur chase through the jungle. The children displayed some wonderful acting skills and the teachers even got a turn too! Finally, some baby dinos came to our classrooms for a cuddle. We loved meeting Roger the Pterodactyl who loves to fly around visiting all the wonderful children he meets in schools. Don't forget to tell your adults how to call him next time you are at the park or in your garden! What a wonderful experience we had today. Please ask your child what they have learnt about dinosaurs and which was their favourite.

Year 1

The children in Year 1 have been learning about the artist Wassily Kandinsky.  They examined his artwork, discussing similarities and differences in his paintings.  The children mixed colours to create a colour wheel, then made their own piece of abstract art in the style of Kandinsky.  What budding artists we have!

Year 2

In Year 2 as part of our PSHE lessons we have been identifying people who we respect who are older than us. We drew a picture and explained why we respected them.

In our RW lesson this week we discussed why we need to care for others and what we can do to help other people.

Year 3

Following their trip to the synagogue, Y3 have been continuing their learning on Judaism and why Jewish people celebrate Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and. They should now be able to confidently explain why they are both celebrated and what it entails.

In Writing, they have been learning about speech dialogue - how to correctly punctuate speech and using different synonyms for said to engage the reader. They have been using the book – Our Tower by Joseph Coelho and Richard Johnson to inspire their writing and ideas.

This week Year 3 have also been learning about the parts of a flower in Science. They had lots of fun dissecting the flower and learning about how a seed is made. It's fair to say they are now flower experts.

Year 4

This week, whilst some of Year 4 are at Cuffley Camp, we had the opportunity to make salt dough. We used 2 cups of plain flour, 1 cup of salt and water. Once we mixed all the ingredients together, we have to knead the dough for 10 minutes until it was warm. We left it for 20 minutes and then we were able to use it for our lesson. We drew a picture of our digestive system on cardboard and then used the salt dough to make the organs. Once the salt dough dried, we painted them using red, orange, brown and yellow. We really enjoyed this lesson because it was a great consolidation lesson where we have to physically make the organs using the salt dough. We had fun painting our digestive system which we cannot wait to show on display.

Year 4 have had lots of fun over the last few days. They went to the Natural History Museum in South Kensington. The children had a fantastic time! Bounteous found the trip very interesting. “ I really enjoyed looking at the amphibians and reptiles. There was also a variety of sea animals which I liked exploring.”

Today, Year 4 went to Bush Hill Park for observational drawing of the beautiful surroundings and had an opportunity to play team games.

Year 5

This week in science Year 5 have been looking at nappies! We investigated two different types of nappies - disposable and reusable nappies. We were investigating the efficiency of each type of nappy and comparing them against some different criteria. We tested whether they were waterproof, leakproof, absorbent, comfortable and flexible. We used cups of water to measure how much liquid each nappy could absorb and we created a table with point system to rank the nappies against each criteria. As we expected disposable nappies were incredibly absorbent being able to absorb 4 cups of water, and still the inside layer was relatively dry, whereas the reusable nappies could only absorb one cup before they became saturated. Although the disposable nappies were incredibly efficient (and scored the highest on nearly every criteria), they were also very bad for the environment. They are filled with chemicals, contain plastic and are single use, meaning they would not decompose easily and would be polluting for the environment. The main benefit of the reusable nappies is that they could be washed and used again.

Year 6

Space

This week, we have started our new Science topic: Space.

We began by looking at how scientific theories have developed throughout history and how human's have changed their knowledge of the celestial area. To help us know more about this, we created timelines to show how this has changed.

We then moved onto learning about the individual planets. We researched them and found out facts to make Top Trumps cards.

Year 4 Cuffley Camp

This week, pupils from Year 4 have had an absolutely amazing few days at Cuffley Camp. They have impressed the staff at the site with their resilience and polite manners.  Miss O'Neill has said she's had the time of her life due to their enthusiasm, excellent teamwork and determination to join in, even when it's been a long hot day.  They have completed so many activities: wall climbing, low ropes, obstacle courses, wide games, campfire, bridge making and many more.  They will have many memories and will sleep well tonight.
