George Spicer Newsletter - 7th June 2024

Welcome to the final half-term of the academic year – how time has flown!  I hope you all had a lovely break as a family and are all ready for the final push this year. The reason we choose Resilience to be our final value is that is what we all need to finish the year strongly.  Mr Spong introduced the value at KG with a story of Z the Zebra who feared failing at things but overcame this by taking deep breaths and controlling his emotions.  At Sketty he revisited the inspirational story of Rob Burrow, who sadly passed away this week having suffered from Motor Neurone Disease for a number of years.  He showed incredible resilience throughout his life as a rugby league international despite being very small and then battling the debilitating disease whilst raising awareness and money for the search for a cure.  If you want to know more about this incredible story of courage and resilience then you can watch an extended version of what we showed here. I challenged the children to be the sort of friend he was and he had to others and to remember his powerful final message to dream big!

In assemblies as usual we shared the various national days that occur in the calendar with the children and this week was a bumper week – Cheese and Bicycle day at the end of the week, world environment and ocean day and of course the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings – ultimate resilience shown – which was such a pivotal moment in both history and in WW2. It is difficult to comprehend what those who gave so much faced that day, but we must never forget and be forever grateful and Rob Burrow’s final words fit perfectly on this anniversary “My final message is whatever your personal battle, be brave and face it. Every single day is precious, don't waste a moment. In a world full of adversity, we must still dare to dream.”

Ambassadors - KS1 GSPS Ambassadors had their first meeting this week with Mrs Allen and KS2 Ambassadors met with Mrs Bugliari.  They were all very excited to learn more about how important their role is to the school and are full of ideas of how to make George Spicer Primary School even better.

Asher said, "It's already great here, how can improve it even more?"

With such enthusiasm and positivity, we know these Ambassadors will achieve great things over the next year.

Walk to School Week - Well done everyone who made an extra special effort to use active travel during Walk to School Week before Half Term.  Each class tracked their method of travel to school and completed a survey about how they might prefer to travel.  Many children (and staff) said they would like to cycle to school.  If you would like to brush up on your cycling skills and join your child(ren) cycling to and from school, then please see further below the leaflet to find out about FREE training offered by Enfield Council.

Enfield Council have asked if parents and carers could please complete the following short survey.

End of Year School Report – we will be sending children's school reports from week commencing 8th July. Please ensure we have your correct email address.  To check/amend your details please log in to ARBOR.

Headlice - We would like to advise you to check your child's/children's hair to avoid a spread. Please can we reinforce that it is important to keep your child's hair up if it is shoulder length or longer as per our uniform policy.

Donations - Please could we have donations of chalk, colouring pens and pencils for Ms Barker's lunchtime colouring club.

Reception

Reception had a wonderful surprise when they returned from their half-term holiday. The caterpillars that we have been observing over the past few weeks, finally emerged from their chrysalis. The children watched in amazement as they were released from the net into the wild. "I can see some orange on their wings!" remarked 'A' in Poppy class. "Look! It's landed on my shoe!" squealed 'R' in Daffodil class!

The children then recorded all their observations and knowledge about butterflies in their writing books. Look at this wonderful work all about the different stages of the lifecycle of a caterpillar!

Year 1

This week in Science, the children in Year 1 were given the question: ‘What wild and garden plants can we find around our school?’ They investigated around the playground and meadow to look for plants to help them answer the question.  L said "I found a dandelion and that is it's seed!"  and M said "That's a strawberry bush.  I have one in my garden!"  They smelled Rosemary and Honeysuckle plants, comparing scents and discussing what they reminded them of.  The children then returned to class to look at both wild and garden plants, then drew and labelled a plant of their choice.

Year 2

Year 2 have had a very exciting first week. In Writing we have been learning about the word protector and what it means to be a protector. We wrote lovely poems about water as well as statements and thought bubbles about how we need to protect our water from oil spillage, pollution and rubbish! Everyone was very passionate about this subject and all of Year 2 wrote some strong statements about protecting the ocean!

We were also very lucky to have special visitors this week from ZooLab! Year two got a chance to hold all sorts of different animals and learn about their food chains and habitats. Everyone had a blast sharing their previous knowledge and learning new facts about the animals!

Year 3

Year 3 have had a lovely week back after half-term as they got to go on their first local school trip this year! They visited Southgate Progressive Synagogue as they have been learning about Judaism.

They enjoyed seeing all the special features inside a synagogue, from the stained glass windows to the tree of life where loved ones who have passed away have their names carved on. In addition, they got to see the Torah up close and learn how a yad is used to read it. They even got to taste challah (Jewish bread) - YUM! It was a great opportunity for the children to further their learning outside of the classroom.

Year 4

In Writing this week, Year 4 have been exploring the story of Robin Hood. We learnt how Robert came to become Robin Hood. We also learnt that King Richard had gone missing, so Robert had no one to defend him when the Sheriff accused him of plotting to kill the King. We wrote a newspaper article capturing what happened at the wedding ceremony of Maid Marian and Robert. We really enjoyed this theme and creating our newspaper articles. Towards the end of the week, we had an opportunity to edit our work and re-draft using all elements of the success criteria.

Year 5

It has been a busy first week back at school for Year 5. On Monday, we started a new writing unit about screen time. This week we are focussing on immersion activities. The children have been analysing texts, researching and debating the pros and cons of screen time and device use. The children learned what a balanced argument is and how different stakeholders each have different viewpoints and perspectives which may be in favour or against an issue or question being discussed.

The main event of the week was our trip to the British Museum. The whole of Year 5 went by bus and train to look at the Egyptian galleries and watch a workshop about Mummification. The children loved seeing the actual artefacts we have been learning about in our topic lessons, in particular they were excited to see the Rosetta stone and the Gebelein or ‘Ginger’ man who was mummified by being buried in the hot, sands of the Sahara desert. The whole of Year 5 were impeccably behaved and they were a real credit to George Spicer School.

Year 6

D-Day

This week, Year 6 have learnt about D-Day. Thursday marked the 80th anniversary of this significant event.

To begin with, we learnt about the significance of this event and looked at some primary sources to see what we could learn from them about D-Day.

Once we had done this, we wrote 2nd person narratives of a soldier landing on the beaches of Normandy. As this was written in second person, the work we created had a creepy edge whilst also containing lots of emotive language.

This week our KS2 assemblies were about Online Safety. The children were engaged in a range of discussions about the benefits and potential dangers of the internet and we discussed ways in which we can keep ourselves and our friends safe online. The next day, one of our Y6 pupils created this incredible poster detailing the key points from the assembly in an easy-to-read format!

Music Lessons

Yr6 entered the Soccer Aid Design a Mascot Competition. We had some wonderful creations and to our delight, we have a well-deserved finalist! The lucky student has won the opportunity to watch this year’s Soccer Aid match, this coming Sunday. Have an amazing time, Oliver!

Mrs Brown and Malakai have made a start with tidying up the living wall on Southbury Road.

Lots more clearing work to do and some planting.

Thank you to Malakai who worked really hard and did a fantastic job.
