George Spicer Newsletter - 17th May 2024

Year 6 SAT's - This week, our year 6 children completed their Statutory Assessment Tests (SATs). They performed incredibly well, coping well with the change of routine, as well as the added stress tests brings. Their results will be released in early July. We want to say a huge thank you to all of the staff who supported the children this week and a huge well done to all the children!

Next week, the majority of our year 6 children will be embarking on their week-long residential trip to PGL in Shropshire. We hope they enjoy their adventure and enjoy all the new experiences they come across! Those not attending also have many fun activities to look forward too!

Walk to School week

Our school is taking part in Walk to School Week. The nationwide event is to help pupils experience first-hand the importance of active travel to school.

By walking, scootering or cycling to school, children will be well on their way to reaching their recommended minimum 60 minutes of physical activity per day before even reaching the school gates! Not only will it set them up for a positive day in the classroom, but it will also help create healthy habits for life.

This year’s challenge, The Magic of Walking, encourages children to travel actively to school every day of the week. If you live far away from school and need to drive or take public transport, try parking the car in one of our convenient park and stride locations, or hopping off the bus/train ten minutes away and walking the rest of the journey.

Start thinking now about what you can do to join in the Magic of Walking challenge.

Please see link to our park and stride leaflet. Park and stride

Reception

This week, Reception, had a workshop with Obi the Clown. We have had a fantastic time learning different acrobatic skills, such as juggling, balancing feathers on our hands and holding plates with long poles.

The children have enjoyed a whole year group workshop where Obi the clown used his unicycle to ride around the hall and showed us various juggling circus skills. Obi also visited our classrooms for discussions and questions.

"Obi is funny, he is a very good juggler," said Freya

"He can ride on a unicycle," said Joseph

Year 1

In Science, the children in Year 1 have continued learning about vertebrates.  Our focus this week was fish and the children were so excited to closely observe and examine a real fish.   The children exclaimed: "I've never seen a fish in real life!"  "I really liked touching the fish's fin and body" and "I liked seeing how the mouth opens - it was really weird."  After discussing the structure, they were then able to draw and label the features of a fish.

Year 2

This week Year 2 have continued with their learning all about the Stone Age. The children learnt about Midsummer’s Day and Midwinter’s Day and had lots of historical questions about why Stonehenge was built! In Science, we went on our second bug hunt in the meadow, exploring a ‘grassy habitat’ and compared the needs of the animals found to our first walk in a ‘woody habitat’.

Year 3

As part of their Science topic this summer, Year 3 have been learning all about flowering plants and plant growth. They have been exploring what flowering plants have in common and what a plant would look like if it is healthy or unhealthy. They have also been carrying out a comparative test enquiry to find out what would happen if a plant lost some or all of its leaves. Working as scientists, they have been recording their findings and diagrams in a flowing plant diary. The children have also learnt lots of new scientific vocabulary along the way!

Year 4

This week in Geography we have been exploring 4-figure grid references by looking at Ordinance Survey maps of our local area. We were given some landmarks to find and had to use the key to find the grid reference. We then tested our partners by telling them the grid references and making them find that location on the map. We had a lot of fun exploring the maps of our local area.

Year 5

This half terms PSHE unit is all about Relationships. We have been looking at online and virtual relationships and how to make sure those relationships are healthy and happy. In particular this week we were learning about Online Gaming – how to form Healthy relationships when we are playing online and how to stay safe. As part of this the children discussed some simple rules they can follow when they are playing online, as well as some things they definitely should not do. The children looked at some synopsis for fictional games. They were looking at the target audience and the different features of the games to identify those that might pose a risk to children online. They identified things in the games that might be risky and came up with some suggestions for how to change the games so they were safe for all users. We were really impressed with the children’s sensible ideas. They were able to identify those apps and games that were perhaps not safeguarding children and came up with some great ideas for how to improve those games and make them safe.

Year 6
