Value Update

Our whole school value this half term is kindness.  So far this month Mr Spong has set the children some challenges in assembly.  The children have been asked to be a ‘helping hand’ to others and to smile at people because a warm smile is the universal language of kindness.  Hopefully you have experienced these over the past few weeks.  The children should also now be reflecting each night, before they go to bed on who they have been kind to that day – perhaps you could ask them before you say good night.  Kindness is a super power we all possess and in a world where we can be anything we should always be kind.

Quote of the week

“Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.”

 Princess Diana

Reception

This week in Reception we have been beginning to learn about seasonal changes and have been looking at autumn and which items fall from the trees.  We made patterns using acorns, conkers, pine cones and leaves. Once we made our patterns, the children decided to use the Numicon pieces and they asked to paint them to print the shape of them next to their pattern to represent their answer.

Year 1

In Year 1 this week, we have enjoyed retelling the story 'Noisy Train'.  We are trying our best to remember our finger spaces, capital letters and full stops. We have been challenging ourselves to extend our writing using the conjunction 'and'. To do this, we have been orally rehearsing lots of sentences. Cindy said, "They saw cows and birds on the farm". Elif said, "The guard got the farmer and his horse".

As part of our gymnastics learning, we have been working on taking weight on different body parts and holding our positions for three seconds. We have been encouraged to think about different ways we can move our bodies and different types of balances we can do.

We are really excited to start our new topic British Birds and Mammals next week.

Year 2

This week in Year 2 we have been learning about our local urban habitat (Enfield) and the different human and physical features that can be found there.  We also looked at how Enfield has changed over the years – the pupils really enjoyed looking at and discussing what they could see in the old photos and images.  We have also been talking about what animals and their offspring need to survive as part of our Science sessions, and in particular how reliant they are (if at all) on an adult.  The children enjoyed looking at pictures of baby animals, and showed great knowledge when discussing what each species would need when first born.

Year 3

This week in Art we have been learning about abstract paintings, specifically focusing on the artist Princess Fahrelnissa Zeid. We have looked at how she creates her abstract art using kaleidoscopic patterns. In our lesson this week, we attempted to recreate one of Zeid's artworks called My Hell (1951), which was inspired by the flight path of a fly. We used a video to recreate this and using our pencils we mirrored the direction it flew, to form our own abstract picture.

Year 4

This week in year 4 the children enjoyed their first strings lesson which was very exciting. The children played games, learnt the names of the parts of the violin and viola. They also learnt the names of the strings and did some plucking.

In PSHE this week the children have been discussing rewards and consequences of our actions. They played a connecting game where they need to pass a ball around the circle without using their hands. During the session the children were given different scenarios to act out and freeze frame. They had meaningful discussions about what appropriate rewards and consequences are for different actions.

Year 5

Computing

During our Computing topic this term (Search Engines) Year 5 have recapped search engines and tested our searching skills! We considered inaccurate information, fake news and unreliable sources and the impact these can have on the reader. We had discussion linked to bias and the role this plays in the media. We were then introduced to web crawlers and looked at the role of a web index and how this can affect page rank. During our lessons, we also discussed online safety, remembering to always be SMART: Safe online, not to Meet up, not to Accept files, check the Reliability of information and to always Tell an adult if we do not feel safe or see something that upsets us.

Ra class said: We really enjoyed learning how to search effectively. It was interesting to reflect on what we have been taught in History, about checking the reliability for sources and questioning what information is presented to us. This links to Article 19, the right to Access information.

Osiris class said: We really enjoyed using the different software and ensuring we are able to search effectively and safely online.

Anubis class said: We enjoyed creating our own posters on how to search effectively.

Thoth class said: You can use search engines like Kiddle to find information that is appropriate for children. It’s really important to tell an adult if you see something that worried you. Some websites give reliable, accurate information, others give us opinions or sometimes make things up.

Year 6

Year 6 have been working on our gymnastic skills as part of PE this half term. We have been looking at balances and counter-balances, working with a partner to create a sequence. Our objective was to create a sequence of six balances and counter-balances, demonstrating flexibility and control. This week, we focused on transitioning from one balance to another as seamlessly and professionally as possible. We then introduced one piece of equipment into our sequences and tried to use it as imaginatively as we could. We ended the lesson by showing each other our sequences so far and receiving feedback from our peers.
