Reception Class

We had a great time at our very first Sports Day this week. We did javelin, bean bag toss and hurdles. We have been practising our gross motor skills all year during PE and focus activities; we have learnt how to hop, skip and throw safely. This has helped us to develop our social skills to, we have been working as a team and supporting our friends. It was so exciting to have our adults come into school to cheer us on! Harry said ‘I throwed the javelin really far’ and Betty said ‘I liked the bean bags and the thing you balance on your head because I like balancing and I like throwing’.

Year 1

Year One have had a fantastic afternoon. For Science, they made a flower using tissue paper and different colour card and labelled the flower. We learnt that plants have different parts to them. The roots of a plant anchors the plant in the ground and without roots a plant will fall over. Roots also take in nutrients and water from the soil. Did you know that the stem helps support the plant? Leaves also make food for the plant. We really enjoyed our Science lesson.

Also, in English we have been weather reporters. Tomorrow, we are recording the script we wrote this week. We cannot wait to watch our weather forecast on the big screen! Don’t forget to drink lots of water over the next few days. Enjoy the sunshine!

Year 2

Fieldwork

This week Year 2 completed their fieldwork in Bush Hill park. The aim of our fieldwork was to identify the best place for the park keeper to put a new bin. To do this, we discussed needing to see if there was an area of the park that had more litter dropped in. Before leaving school, we looked at what a fair test is and talked about how we were going to ensure that we kept our investigation fair. Using maps, the children worked in groups to observe an area of Bush Hill park. We recorded our findings using a tally chart, marking each time we saw a different type of litter. We then used this information to create a block diagram.

Dead, Alive or Myth?

As we continue our learning about animals that are extinct or endangered, we have started an Art project creating masks using papier mache. Each class are creating a mask of a different endangered animal, which we are keeping a secret to reveal at our Time to Shine assembly once they are all complete. We discussed needing to shape the newspaper onto the balloon to create the base and how we are going to attach the features of the animal.

Year 3

Maths

In Maths, have been learning about turns. We have been practising our direction of turn (clockwise/anticlockwise) as well as the amount we turn.

PE

This week in PE, we had the opportunity to go over to the park where we have been playing a variety of field games including cricket.

Pride week

We also completed our Pride artwork by using watercolours to create a 'wash' background before drawing a stencil to layer on top of our painting.

Year 4

As part of our Digestion System topic, in year 4 we had a fun filled morning making Pitta Pizzas. We used pitta bread and a range of healthy toppings, carefully following the instructions given. We then took our pizzas home and cooked them using an oven or grill.

Year 5

Pride

Last week, inspired by our learning of the 1969 Stonewall protests in New York City, Year 5 created their own placards with inspiring messages to celebrate and stand as allies with the LGBTQ+ community.  The children researched placards and stencilled their quotes, words and images onto card. Using a range of mixed mediums, such as newspapers, acrylic paints and permanent markers, the children created bold placards to make sure their statements bold and easy to read. The class teachers were so impressed with the skill, care, curiosity and enthusiasm the children showed when creating the placards, understanding how placards and taking part in protests can be a way to ignite change! We hope you enjoyed seeing the finished placards at the Open Afternoon on Wednesday!

In PSHE, we discussed what it means to be an ally and where people can go for support if they are confused or curious.  We looked at various scenarios and came up with possible solutions for the people who were experiencing different hardships. We then discussed how we could all be allies to the LGBTQ+ community and offer support to those who have faced discrimination (Article 2 - No discrimination).

Well done Year 5 on showing maturity, respect and kindness when discussing your views on Pride.

Year 6

Finding Nemo

To mark the end of Year Six, and their time at George Spicer, the children have been working tirelessly to put together a special performance. The show this year was Finding Nemo. A tale about a little clown fish, who gets stolen away, and a father who will stop at nothing to rescue his little boy.

Not only did the children have to learn their lines, their cues and their acting directions but each class performed a special dance. For some, this was a massive break-away from their comfort zone but all children gave it their all. The effort, dedication and commitment all the children put into their performances was incredible and we are incredibly proud of them!

To the many children who voluntarily stepped in last minute to cover those children who were absent on show days, you showed a mature attitude that will serve you well at Secondary School next year.

It takes a lot of effort and commitment to put on a show like this and we want to thank the audiences for being so fantastic (despite the heat). We are so glad that so many family members got to watch a performance.

We must say a special thank you and congratulations to Mrs Wellbrook, who has over again proven that she is a phenomenal director.

The children should be so proud of themselves! They were superstars!
