Reception Class

Reception Pride Week

PSHE

In PSHE Reception have been learning about different kinds of families as part of our Pride week work. We found out that some people live with lots of people and some only live with one or two other people. Aryan said, "I live with my Mummy, my Daddy, my sister, my uncle and my cousin."

Kiara told us that she lives with her grandparents as well as her parents. The children made some collage pictures to represent their different families. They took care when choosing skin and hair colour and thought really carefully about the materials to use for their clothes.

Thalia in Primrose class brought a book in to share with her friends that celebrated differences. It was called 'Super Duper You'.  We really enjoyed talking about how we are alike and how we are different. This led us onto talking about all the things that make us feel proud.

Merdan said, "I am proud that I don't need any help to build my Lego anymore!"

Atlas remarked, "I feel really proud when I do something new!"

Art

We worked together to create a wonderful Pride flag in the Reception playground. The children worked hard to try and match the correct colours and stay within the lines. The children talked about all the different colours as they painted. We took photos of before, during and after to demostarte our hard work. We are all very proud of our Pride flag.

Year 1

This week it is Pride week. In Art, we made our own flag using collage. We used the colours of the rainbow. In PSHE we watched a video on Roy and Silo who are two penguins in a family who raise a baby penguin called Tango. We then drew a picture of the people we have a close relationship with. We spoke about relationships being different. We enjoyed our lessons.

Yesterday, Year One went to Frinton-on-Sea. We travelled by coach. It was so much fun as we were singing songs and playing games. Once we got to Frinton, we found a space to eat our yummy lunch. When we finished our lunch, we walked down the steep pathway and went to the beach. The sand was smooth and soft and the water was cold. Each class had an opportunity to put their feet in the water, then we built sandcastles with our friends. The beach huts were bright and colourful. We had so much fun on our trip to Frinton-on-Sea.

'I loved playing in the sand with the buckets and spades,' said Blake

We would love to go back soon!

Year 2

Pride Week:

This week Year 2 have discussed why we celebrate differences and the importance of including others in what we do. To celebrate Pride Week, we used block painting, with fruit and vegetables to create the pride flag on white T-shirts.  We then each created a class flag using our handprints.

Joshua in Woodpecker - "This flag means that everybody should feel included and we should celebrate each other".

Maebelle - "The flag represents everyone and that we are all different like the different colours".

Dead, Alive or Myth?

We have continued with our learning of our new topic this week. In Writing, the children looked at the now extinct Tasmanian tiger and wrote a non-chronological report using the facts that they had learnt. We also looked at other extinct animals to create a fact file, looking at where they lived, their habitat, what they ate and why they became extinct.

Year 3

Fieldwork

This week, Year 3 have been conducting their fieldwork. We have been investigating the different types of housing on Sketty Road and have analysed our results, considering why there are more terraced houses and flats in the local area. We recorded our results in a table and then presented them in a bar chart.

Pride Week

During Pride Week, Year 3 have been learning about what it means to be an ally. We thought of different ways that we could be an ally and created these colourful hands to present our ideas. We will continue our learning about Pride Week and will be creating wire hearts and weaving felt through them using the colours of the Pride flag.
Article 2: No discrimination

Year 4

As part of our Pride Week celebrations, in Year 4 we have been learning about the meaning of Pride, what it stands for to different people and how to be an ally. In PSHE we discussed ways to be an ally and the words associated with Pride.

We made mini collages about Pride choosing a colour scheme and stencil to show what we felt about Pride.

Year 5

Science: Electricity!

During Science this week, we learnt that circuits are made up of various components and that all components have scientific symbol. We looked at series circuits which is made by connecting the end of one device to the beginning of another. Our first task was to play a memory game in groups so we could recognise and understand the scientific symbols. Afterwards, we made our own circuits and observed how circuits work and what happens when we change the components.

We asked the children:

What did you learn and why do components have scientific symbols?

Presley: “Components have scientific symbols so we can easily recognise them”

Arsenie: “It can be difficult if scientific symbols were not used, if you were to draw them without using symbols, it can be difficult to identify them. Using scientific symbols makes it easier to read.”

Amelia: “Drawing symbols is a lot quicker to draw rather than taking hours to draw. Scientific symbols make it easier to read and stop the drawings of the circuits from looking like a piece of art work.”

Aden: “It is quicker to draw symbols when creating a diagram of a circuit and they are easy to remember once you know them!”

Year 6

Year 6 Celebrates Pride Week!

This week, as well as rehearsing for our end of year show, Year 6 have been taking part in activities to celebrate Pride. We started the week with a PSHE lesson, where we thought about the word support. We considered how we might talk to a friend who was a member of the LGBTQ+ community as well as what it means to be an ally. We thought about how we can show kindness to all, not just to those similar to us.

As well as this, in art, we created Pride Masks that celebrate love and equality. We tried to incorporate the Pride flag within our masks. We know that at times, people from the LGBTQ+ community had to wear a figurative "mask" as they could not be themselves; we decided to flip this idea on its head and create masks that celebrate inclusiveness and challenge discrimination (Article 2 of the UNCRC).

We look forward for you to see all our wonderful creations on Open Evening, when they will be displayed in the upstairs hall!
