George Spicer newsletter - Thursday 8th July 2021

Covid update – please continue to follow the latest government guidance www.gov.uk/coronavirus where there are important changes from 19 July 2021.

Parent consultation meetings – if you have not already booked a slot, and haven’t received a text or email, please contact the office so appointments can be made for you to meet your child/ren’s teachers before the end of term.

End of term – school finishes on Wednesday 21 July at the end of the school day. There will be no After School Club on this day.

School Streets – please remind your child/ren that from September they will not be able to walk/scooter or cycle in the middle of Sketty Road at the start and end of the school day.

Personal possessions in school – we are a cashless school and this applies to children (as well as adults) not to bring in money. Do not allow children to bring in personal items, such as toys and gadgets, which may go missing or become damaged. We cannot accept responsibility for these items.

Plea for donations for classrooms and clubs

Over the summer holidays, we will continue our rolling project of decorating and refurbishing classrooms.  If you have any good quality books and games that you no longer need, of primary school age, we would love to have them to replenish class bookshelves; Breakfast & After School Club and Learning Mentors’ room. Please arrange with the school office when to drop them off. Thank you in advance.

Quote of the week

"What’s done is done. What’s gone is gone. One of life’s lessons is always moving on. It’s okay to look back to see how far you’ve come but keep moving forward." – Roy T. Bennett

Attendance week ending 01/07/2021

Overall school = 94.46% Lates = 101

Best attendance: 1st Snowdrop 98.05%  2nd  Anubis 97.58% 3rd Oak 97%

Headteachers's Tea Party

Mr Spong has been busy this week hosting over 70 children at his various Headteacher Tea Parties. He did enjoy the cake, but the reasons the children were given their stars were even more enjoyable. Perseverance; being a good role model; helping others; trying their best; excellent writing to name but a few.

Reception Class

We won’t let the British weather stop us! On Tuesday, Reception held their sports day. We tried to use the meadow, it was too wet. We tried our playground, it was too slippery, so we settled on the hall. The Reception children threw themselves into every event; the egg and spoon race, hurdles, long jump, bean bag throw and sprinting. Thank you for being so well-behaved and for showing good sportsmanship by cheering each other on.

Year 1

This week, Year 1 took part in a fantastic sports day. They took part in javelin, relay races, bean bag targets, penalty shoot-outs and egg and spoon races. They were all brilliant!

Year 2

This week, Year 2 are learning all about extinct animals. We are using papier mache to create a dodo and we are learning all about where they used to live and the reasons why they became extinct. It has been brilliant to develop our art skills and discover so much about these magnificent birds.

Year 3

Year 3 enjoyed participating in sports day last week. They really persevered and tried their best at every activity. It was lovely to see so many of them join in our year group races. Well done Year 3!

Year 4

This week in Maths, Year 4 have been exploring bar graphs, pictograms and line graphs!

Year 5

Art

We have been developing Zentangle designs and turning them into layered prints. The children worked really hard on this and it was a difficult process, but the results look amazing. Next week, we will put all of the elements together to create our final piece of artwork.

Forty Hall Farm

Year 5 had a brilliant morning at Forty Hall Farm this week. We got to walk around the farm and see all of the different plants growing - we saw cucumbers, broad beans, lettuces, tomatoes, grapes and lots more! We also got to see the animals living on the farm. It was amazing to see how vast Forty Hall actually is and how much local produce is grown right on our doorsteps! You can visit the farm at the weekends and we would definitely recommend a family visit.

Year 6

On Wednesday, Year Six had their final sports day at George Spicer! The children represented their house teams and competed against each other in 8 different events. The children returned to school with massive smiles on their faces.

Miss Grant’s Reading Challenge

Here are some children enjoying their favourite books from last week’s challenge!

This week’s challenge is to read a book that is your favourite colour. Send any photos of you reading your books to primrose@georgespcier.enfield.sch.uk

 Children’s Recommendations

Reception

Primrose – Lucia – Do you know? Birds and Insects by BBC Earth - I like this book because it has information about birds and insects. My favourite pages are Do all birds fly? because it has penguins and What do we know about young insects? because it tells us about baby insects.

Daffodil – Sophia – Doris the Loris by Twinkl – My favourite character is the birds. At the ends of the story there is a big library, it is my favourite. People who like animals and reading should read this book.

Bluebell – Riley – The Stars Have All Gone Out by Igloobooks – I like when the bear paints the stars with the fairies. The bear flies into space on his red balloon. The stars were running away so the fairies caught the stars. When they caught the stars they painted them pink, purple and blue.

Snowdrop – Tabitha – Kind by Julia Donaldson – There is a kindness jar, you can put anything in it. Every time you do something kind you can put a marble or a button in. You can hold someone’s hand if they are frightened you can help someone if they are stuck.

Year 1

Elm – Ezra – Supertato by Sue Hendra – I like when the pea gets stuck in jelly. The vegetables are funny. Supertato gets stuck in the freezer.

Oak – Thomas – Megalodon by Janet Riehecky – It is a non-fictions book, it’s a fact book. The megalodon eats a whale. It has a megalodon in it, it’s the biggest shark that existed.

Ash – Amy and Emilio – Aaaarrgghh Spider! By Lydia Monks – I liked when the spider was dancing. I liked when people are upside down.

Willow – Caleb – Pixie’s Wondrous Adventures by Schnoodle Story Book – I like it because Pixie gets to explore a new places. She was in an aeroplane and scared of heights.

Year 2

Sparrow - Max– Dinosaur Roar! By Henrietta Stickland – I like when the T-Rex annoys people by roaring loudly. The Tyrannosaurus Rex is my favourite character because he is green and he is naughty but he smiles with great happiness at the end. Year 2 would like to read this book because it is fiction and you meet new characters. It is funny because he scares people but at the end he makes people happy.

Owl – Deniz – Stories of Thor by Alex Frich – I like this book because he is a superhero and he saves the earth. My favourite part is when he defeats the horrible snake. You should read this book because you might learn how to be a superhero.

Robin – Isadora Moon has a birthday by Harriet Muncaster – I like this book because Isadora makes magic and gets to practise it. My favourite character Isadora because she is half human and vampire and goes to school as a human. She is totally unique. You should read this book if you like fairies and vampires mixed together very exciting.

Woodpecker - George – George’s Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl- I like this book because it is funny. My favourite character is Mr Killy Kranky because he is always rushing. You should read it because there’s some great recipes in there.

Year 3

Cheyenne - Gentian - Trayaurus and the Enchanted Crystal by DanTDM -  Scientistic book written in comic form and it is very interesting and magical. Luca (Apache) - This book is about a young boy named Harrison and his brand new friend called Lenny. They go on the most famous steam train in Britain. A suspicious thief strikes so Harrison and Lenny go undercover.

Year 5

Ra - Shyama - Northern Lights by Philip Pullman - I like this book because it's really mysterious and there are lots of surprises waiting to be discovered when you read it!

Lyra is my favourite character because she is outgoing and adventurous and I see myself in her character! People who like lots of mysteries and dark story lines would enjoy this book.

 Year 6

Spitfires - Suzana - Undercover Princess by Connie Glynn - I like this book because two girls switch places, and they begin to live the other person's life. It starts to become really interesting after this happens. Lottie Pumpkin is my favourite character, as she always wants to become a princess. It was a really good to see that she is given the opportunity to experience the life that she had always wanted. I recommend this book mainly to children. I think the storyline would engage the child reading this book because it has a god outcome at the end, which would interest a young child in my opinion.

Miss Spillman's Esafety tips

Inappropriate material/websites

As children are becoming more and more active online, the possibilities and probabilities that they’ll see something that is inappropriate is more likely.  This can range from films, games, videos, TV shows etc.

Parents and carers can find it difficult to monitor what children are viewing as they can access this material through any internet enabled device.

Sometimes children may stumble upon unsuitable sites by accident, through apps they’ve downloaded to their mobile device or through links they’ve been sent by friends, chatting to others online, or even through inter-device communication systems such as AirDrop.

There are a number of tools you can use to monitor what children are doing on their device and block access to certain content through filters. Preparing your child for what they might see is vital to make sure they know how to deal with it if they see something inappropriate.

There are a number of ways that you can work out whether a piece of content is suitable for your child. Platforms use a type of rating to advise on the level of violence and explicit content that a piece of media contains.

In the UK, Film Classification helps to regulate and classify the content of films shown in the cinema but it is now also working on legislation to restrict access to adult websites to introduce age verification to keep out under 18s.

Edible Garden Projects all across the school

Look at our gardens grow!  Each year group has been planting, growing and nurturing a variety of edible plants.  Some year groups have already harvested and sampled whilst others are nearly there.  Gardening is all about time and patience as well as the weather.  Hopefully the next two weeks brings a growth spurt so we can harvest before we break up for the holidays.
