George Spicer Newsletter - 28/03/2025

It is hard to believe we are ending the penultimate week of the Spring Term, one week left until the holidays.  In the past fortnight, we have had a number of performances where the children have been able to show and share their wider talents.  The Year One, George Spicer Sings performances were wonderful to see and hear and I’m sure like me, the parents were wowed by them.  Also, this week we had a group of KS2 children taking part in the Enfield School’s Dance Festival – a great evening.  These will be followed by Year Four strings concerts and an Art Exhibition by the club.  Offering these activities is essential in broadening the skills and opportunities that your children can experience as part of their personal development.

Assemblies this week continued to focus on our Value of Respect – looking at mutual respect and how to respond if things don’t go your way or you feel angry with a situation/person.  Anger is a normal human emotion. What gives it its negative link is how we respond when angry.  Sharing strategies with all the children to be assertive and talk about the emotion instead of reacting in an aggressive way.  Hopefully you may see some of these in action as we continue with the annual challenge of helping the children be their best version of themselves.

In recent weeks, we have had a number of external people, including our Governors, coming to observe the learning taking place.  All of these people have commented positively on the calm atmosphere and how well the children are engaged in their learning in lessons.  The feedback from these different people has filled me with a sense of pride as the term comes to an end.

Early in the new term I will be sending out some information about upcoming parent vacancies on the Governing Body and asking for declarations of interest.  Having people from within our school community focussed on helping us to continuously improve is vitally important and I hope you will consider joining to support the journey.

This weekend is an important one for many of you/us, we should hopefully have some nice warm sunshine to celebrate Mother’s Day – a fitting end to Women’s history month; hopefully making up for the hour less in bed!  I would also like wish Eid Mubarak to those within our community celebrating on (probably)Monday, as per our new tradition, we will be having an Eid-themed menu (designed by a former pupil) one day next week.

Housepoints will also be counted next week, so please keep an eye out for the announcement of which colour wins – what I am really pleased to see is how full the tubes all are, which means the children have worked really hard to demonstrate our Be’s and Values.

Many thanks for your continued support, have a lovely weekend.

Reception

Reception were very excited to have a visit from Tim the clown!  He was very funny and showed the children some new tricks. We learnt how to balance a feather on our hands, spin plates on a stick and throw and catch a scarf. He also showed us how to ride his unicycle and to juggle with balls. The children enjoyed the visit and were very keen to talk about what they had learned.

“I liked spinning the plates really fast” C - Poppy class.

“I liked balancing the feather the best” D - Poppy class.

“It’s so tricky to balance the feather” I - Daffodil class.

Year 1

This week Year 1 have been learning about the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr. The children have explored the different ways Muslims celebrate Eid and how they share this with others. The children then found similarities and differences between Eid and other celebrations such as Christmas and Easter. Some of our children who celebrate Eid also shared their favourite parts of the day.

"I enjoy sharing presents with my family."

"They have a delicious feast just like Christmas dinner."

"Mehndi designs looks so fun."

Year 2

This week we have been reading our new book for our Literacy Tree topic. It is called 'Grandad's Camper' and is all about making special memories with friends and family.

The children brought in special objects from home to inspire their writing. NR brought in a fluffy teddy given to her when she was firstborn. She said it reminds her of her mum's soft, kind hands and having warm cuddles. BL showed a magnet from his trip to The Monument in London. He said he climbed the slippery stairs to the top and heard the canons fire from the battleship on the Thames.

Year 3

Year 3 have been working on their geometry knowledge over the last few weeks. This week, they learnt about what nets make a particular 3D shape and investigated a range of different nets to see if they would make a 3D shape or not. Working in pairs, they used magnetic tiles to test it out and see if their predictions were correct.

They also enjoyed going on a shape hunt where they had to read different clues in order to find different shapes hidden around the playground.

Year 4

Year 4 Discover Their Inner Reporters!

Year 4 took on the exciting role of budding journalists as they explored one of the most famous discoveries in history – the opening of Tutankhamun’s Tomb in the Valley of the Kings!

In our Writing lessons, the children learned how to write their own newspaper articles all about the incredible moment when British archaeologist Howard Carter uncovered the tomb of the young pharaoh in 1922. They included key facts about the event and carefully answered the classic reporter’s questions: Who? What? When? Where? and Why?

From the moment the sealed doorway was found to Carter’s famous words – "Yes, wonderful things!" – Year 4 brought the story to life with eye-catching headlines, well-structured paragraphs, and a mix of real and imagined quotes to capture the excitement of the discovery. Some of the children even imagined what Howard Carter or Lord Carnarvon might have said in the moment!

We were so impressed with how everyone embraced their inner journalist. Their writing was thoughtful, engaging, and full of historical detail. It’s safe to say we might have a few future reporters among us!

Well done, Year 4 – your writing really shone like treasures in a tomb!

Year 5

In a recent PE lesson, Year 5 carried out an Outdoor and Adventurous Activity lesson. They planned and mapped out their own scavenger hunt. It was a pleasure to see the children enjoying themselves and working so effectively together.

In Writing we concluded our writing topic, 'The Island', by writing our own first-person recount from the perspective of the stranger who arrived on the island. We were 'bowled over' and 'over the moon' at the quality of writing produced - especially the clever use of idioms. We are so proud of the authors in Year 5; you are building on your skills and using these grammatical and composition features with control and flair.

Last week we ventured out onto Southbury road, to carry out fieldwork within our local community. The children were tasked with surveying the local area for the various commercial amenities it has to offer. They also analysed the immediate transport links and assessed the pedestrian access to these local amenities. We were impressed at how observant and analytical they were, using their critical thinking and geographical skills superbly.

Year 6

In Science, Year 6 have been continuing learning about the circulatory system. Initially, the children learned about the different components of blood and their functions. Then they investigated how blood travels around the body and is re-oxygenated once all the oxygen has been used up by different parts of the body. This week, the children looked in detail at the human heart. They learned the features of the heart and the function of each part. To support their learning they then made clay models of the heart and annotated their work to label the main four chambers of the heart. Ask the children if they can explain the difference between a vein and an artery.

Enfield Dance Festival

On Wednesday evening a group of children from Year 4 and 5 participated in the annual Enfield dance festival at the Millfield Theatre. Accompanied by Miss O'Neill and Mr Demczuk. The children had a fantastic time- Riley said " I really enjoyed seeing all of our parents and Mr Spong in the audience" and Eliz said "I really enjoyed pretending to be a boxer on stage and dancing in front of the audience!".

For some of the children this was their first ever performance in a professional theatre on stage with a real audience, despite some nerves they gave their best performance and worked very well as a team, supporting and encouraging each other. The children worked incredibly hard, preparing in their afterschool dance club each Monday and did themselves and Miss O'Neill proud!
