Reception

Reception have enjoyed exploring the story 'The Circles All Around Us', where we have been thinking about who is special to us and who is in our circle.

The children drew circles around themselves and then added family, neighbours, pets and new friends to the circles all around them. We talked about the love and care we share and receive from the special people in our circles and it was lovely to hear some children including their new friends in their outer circles too.  A in Daffodil class said, "My Mummy is in my circle because she loves me and gives me cuddles." F explained, "I have put Roman in my circle because he is my best friend."

Year 1

This week, the children in Year 1 were extremely excited and proud to show off their learning at the Phonics workshops.   IH said "I had to match the pictures" [with sounds]  and "My favourite bit was doing it all by myself!" HC added, "I enjoyed playing with my mummy and showing her lots of phonic games."   Parents commented that they "really enjoyed the workshop" and it was "fantastic!"; "the information given was clear" and "it was lovely to see how well the children learn."

Year 1 Phonics Workshop -

Thank you to all the parents/carers who attended our first workshop of the year - it was a fantastic turnout.  The parent/carers who attended said they found it useful.  Here are some of the many positive comments:

'Really useful and informative.  Fun and energetic.  It is so nice to see the children in their school environment.'

'We will definitely use phonics sounds to help him when writing and spelling.'

'A very useful workshop – positive to be involved and gain an understanding of what our children are working on.'

'A great insight on what to focus on at home.'

'Great to see what the children are doing in class and the activities making it more engaging.'

'Informative, gives a good sense of direction in regards to phonics learning.'

'Always lovely to be invited in and to get to work with our children in school.  More please.'

'Very informative.  Lovely to see classes in action and how the children learn.'

'I felt a part of my son’s learning.'

Year 2

Due to the soggy weather on Tuesday afternoon we were unable to go out for PE so the children worked on their speed stacking skills. They thoroughly enjoyed this activity and it caused a lovely atmosphere of competition and encouragement. Many children were giving each other tips to improve their speed stacking skills.

Year 3

Reading

Year 3 have been exploring the book: Fangs by Malorie Blackman this half term.

Fangs by Malorie Blackman - Penguin Books Australia

We have loved learning about the character of Nathan and his pet tarantula Fangs. We have explored how the characters are feeling throughout the story and even thought about what they might say/think at key times.

We have been focusing on the skill of retrieval so far and are beginning to move onto the skill of inference. We have one chapter left and look forward to finding out what happens at the end. Will Nathan's mum let him keep his pet? Or will Fangs be kicked out of the house?

Year 4

This week, after break, Year 4 found a surprise waiting for them in their classroom. Each classroom had flowers and seeds left for them with a letter. It was from a secret gardener.  The Gardener told us that he needs our help. The varmints are coming and he wants us to plant flowers, to help bring wilderness back to our cities. We are so excited to help him. We then had an opportunity to dissect plants and label each part. Our teacher asked us to use a dictionary to find the meaning of the word varmints. Varmints are wild animals that cause problems. We had lots of questions for our teacher:

  1. Where did the Varmints come from?
  2. How dangerous are they?
  3. Who sent them here?
  4. Who is in charge of the Varmints?
  5. Why are the characteristics of Varmints different to rabbits?

We cannot wait to read the book ‘Varmints’ over the next few weeks.

Keep an eye out for the Varmints. They could be near you!

Year 5

In Maths this week, we have been tackling problems involving negative numbers. We used negative number lines to support our learning.

We honed our fluency skills and then grappled with problem solving, that involved temperature and comparing the temperatures of different European Cities. We were able to tell our teachers which places were warmer/colder and calculate differences between temperatures where there might be a rise or fall. Finally, we gave solid reasoning for our solutions and drew our own number lines to convince our teachers.

Year 5 are looking forward to pitting their problem solving skills against the Happy Puzzle Company's activities later in the year.  We look forward to seeing the children develop their confidence in problem solving over the year. We also had our first TTRS Band Battle between the Year 5 classes. Congratulations  Atlantic Class! Who gained the most points and won the battle this week. We look forward to more competitive battles throughout the year.

Year 6

Our campaigners in Year 6 have been busy writing letters to our Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer. In PSHE they learnt about some of the hardships that families, and particularly children, face when they are forced to become refugees. They learnt about Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, which shows the physiological and psychological needs a person has, which enables them to thrive and succeed. They learnt that some children who are forced to become refugees do not have their basic needs met. So, they wrote to the Prime Minister to point out how these children are not being protected by the UNCRC Rights of the Child and to ask him to consider specific steps to ensure that the UK does as much as possible to support these children. These are some of the incredibly empathetic and mature letters that they wrote.

Boys Football Match

Despite the awful weather on Tuesday, the boys worked incredibly hard to secure two well deserved draws and narrowly lost their final game. Very well done to all of you for showing such resilience and determination whilst contending with the poor conditions and some strong opposition.
