Reports to parents and consultation evenings

This year pupil reports will be sent home via email during the week of 12th July.  This will then be followed by 2 evenings of Parents Consultation meetings on Thursday 15th & Monday 19th July.  These evenings will be an opportunity for you to meet with your child’s teacher in person to discuss their report and view their books.  A link to make an appointment via Teachers2parents will be released to all 1st contacts on Wednesday 26th May from 10am.  We request that parents attend the same meeting for their child; however, if that is not possible and you have not received a link, please contact Mrs Atkinson via office@georgespicer.enfield.sch.uk.  An update will be sent nearer the time to ensure that current government guidelines are being adhered to.

Autumn Term Breakfast & After School Club bookings now live

We’re delighted that the children are returning to the Breakfast & After School Clubs (BASC), which not only supports parents and carers with wrap around care, but the children love playing with their friends outside of the school day.

We are now taking bookings for the Autumn term. Please click BASC Registration Form   with the days of the week and the sessions (AM and/or PM) that you need. In line with our BASC Policy, all payments must be made at least 2 weeks in advance together with any requests to change days or cancel your child’s place(s).

Places are limited due to hall space and staffing ratios, so we will be closing bookings on Wednesday 30th June.

Any queries, you can contact the BASC team via the office email.

Mental Health Awareness week - more activities from last week

Reception Class

Reception thoroughly enjoyed venturing out of school to really enjoy the open spaces and all the nature we would find. Matty H released an insect back into its natural habitat and in class, we planted seeds and beans and sketched sunflowers with really artist sketching pencils. We enjoyed many sensory activities like walking through soil, pom poms and even cornflakes! Henry said they were very “ouchy”. We hope to continue to enjoy activities like this everyday!

Year 1 - Book corner design

The children in Year 1 had the opportunity to design their book corners. They made their own Reading lettering and used mixed materials to make the tree trunks. For the leaves, they wrote what their favourite book was and why they liked it.

'I like Simon Socks because it is funny to me' said Ben from Willow Class.

Year 2 - 'Extraordinary Things'/park visit

This week we have been busy with activities to focus on our mental health. We have read the book 'Extraordinary' by Penny Harrison and created a beautiful colour wash background. We wrote a hope or dream in our star and something that keeps us calm and grounded in the stone.

We have also begun planting for our edible garden. We have planted tomato plants, kale, lettuce, rocket and many more! We are hoping to grow some delicious vegetables in the summer term.

Year 2 visited the Bush Hill Park wildlife garden as part of their mental health activities last week. The children had a lovely time exploring the different habitats and searching for wildlife. We discovered leeches and pond skaters in the mini ponds; mini beasts in the bug hotel and we even heard the sounds of a very noisy chicken in a nearby garden. We ended the session with a quiet ‘calm me’ game. The children used their senses to listen, look and feel the environment around them. We extended our ideas by using adjectives to describe them.

Year 3 - Gladiators of Ancient Rome topic

As part of our immersion into our Gladiators of Ancient Rome topic Year 3 took part in an Ancient Rome workshop. The children enjoyed having a hands-on experience and learning many facts about the Roman Empire and Roman gladiators. They loved trying on gladiator armour and looking at and drawing artefacts of tools that would have been used during the Roman era.

Year 5 - Natural Materials

For mental health week last week, year 5 went to King George playing fields to collect natural materials, which we used to produce these natural weaves. The activity helped us to practise mindfulness and bring the outside in with these beautiful outcomes.

Year 6 - lots of activities

To kickstart Mental Health Week in Year 6 we looked at the book extraordinary. We discussed how nature is extraordinary and looked at famous paintings of nature. From these works we created our own landscape in our head, describing it beautifully in a written setting.

They have been keeping active by learning new dances!

They also went to the playing fields and made art out of natural resources. Look at beautiful pieces of art we created.

We  launched our edible garden! We planted a variety of windowsill plants, from mini carrots to lettuce! We can’t wait to see watch them grow!

Worked in groups of four and drew a quarter of a sunflower each using our sketching skills. When we put our quarters together, they made beautiful sunflowers!

We created a piece of art based on a landscape we had created and written about ourselves. To create these wonderful landscapes we layered card upon card. This also helped us to discuss key terms like background

Miss Grant’s Reading Challenge

Thank you to everyone who turned on their subtitles to read while watching their T.V shows. Here is Evie watching a film about the Beatles because she has been learning about them in music.

This week’s challenge is extreme reading. Can you find the silliest, funniest, wildest place to read your book?  Please send any photos of you using subtitles to primrose@georgespcier.enfield.sch.uk

Children’s Recommendations

Reception

Primrose – Esme – The First Hippo on the Moon by David Walliams. I like when the hippo falls on the other hippo on the moon. It makes me laugh when Shelia steals the other hippo’s rocket. It is a funny book.

Daffodil – Cooper – How to Grow a Dinosaur by Carl Hart. He looked out the window and the garden was full of dinosaurs. I like it when he throws the seeds on the ground without even looking.

Bluebell – Daniel – The Troll by Julia Donaldson – My favourite part is the end because Hank Chief shows the troll the fish but he doesn’t want to eat it. I like Percy Patch, he wears an eye patch.

Snowdrop – Jakub – The Tigon and the Liger by Keilly Swift – The whole story is really nice, he meets his mum. They play together really nicely with the mum and the baby.

Year 1

Willow Class – Katie – Katie and the Dinosaur by James Matthews – I chose this book because there is a secret door and I don’t know what’s behind it! I like dinosaur and it has my name in it.

Elm Class – Zara – Stone Age by Klint Janulis – I like this book because I like learning about the stone age. They were nomadic and used stone tools.

Oak Class – Miryam – Peppa Plays Football by Peppa Pig – My favourite character is Peppa and I like playing football like Peppa.

Ash Class – Who’s Afraid of the Dark by Melanie Joyce

Amelie - I like when the owl was hooting because she was calling for her babies.

Deniz – I liked when the owl got scared because the bats were coming.

Year 2

Sparrow Class – Niko – Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K Rowling - My favourite part was when Ron and Harry crushed into the whomping willow. My favourite characters are Ron and Hermione because Ron is funny and Hermione is clever. You should read this book because it is funny, scary and sometimes dangerous! It has good detail and I love the magic spells.

Owl Class – Claryana – The Butterfly Club by Jacqueline Wilson – I like this book because it has butterflies in it and I love their colourful wings. I like the character Tina because she is shy but brave when she starts a new school. You need to read this book if you love butterflies, nature and gardens.

Robin Class – Harry – James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl – I love this cook as it has lots of funny characters. I like James because he is adventurous. Read this book if you love hero stories and magic!

Woodpecker Class – Sophia – Just Narwhal by Rosie Greening. I like this book because it is set under the sea. My favourite character is Star because she looks like me! You should read this book if you like a happy ending.

Year 3

Cheyenne Class - Isabella - Fing by David Walliams. I recommend this book because it is full of amazing charters such as, Mr meek, Mrs meek and Myrtle meek. Also, Fing. I love this book because Myrtle gets stuck in a swamp and turns into a monster. (Sorry for spoiling). It's amazing. Hope you like it.

Year 4

Theseus Class – Davina - Pig Heart Boy by Malorie Blackman. I like this book because it has depth to it and really makes you feel what the main character is going through in a traumatic life or death situation. A certain part of the book also taught me that you cannot trust everyone, even if they are your closest friend. Also, I like that although the main character is facing death, he still tries to create memories for his sibling that has not even been born yet. It shows that he is genuine and loves his family. I believe that someone who likes drama and heartache, but also some comedy, would really enjoy this book, I would definitely recommend it!

Year 5

Osiris Class – Georgia - The Diamond Brothers in… The Falcon’s Malteser by Anthony Horowitz. I like the book because it is very descriptive and I enjoy reading it. I think this is suitable for children aged 9 and up.

Ra Class- Zeeshan - Kensuke's Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. It's a very adventurous book with a great story line. Michael because he shows determination to get back to his family. Mainly people who like books with stories that have a deeper meaning.

Thoth Class -Mahdka - The Railway Girls by Leah Fleming. I like this book because it is about a revolution and how three women, Ellie, Ezra and Beth, have to fight for everything. The kind of reader that would like this book is someone who loves adventure and mystery.

Anubis Class – Dean - Diary of a Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney. I like the book because it is funny.

My favourite character is Greg Heffly. Read this book if you like comedy.

Year 6

Hurricanes Class - Alex – Scythe by Neal Shusterman. I like this book as it gets more interesting the more you read it. Scythe Faraday as he is very wise like Mr Combe. I would recommend it to anyone who likes fiction or adventure books.

Lancasters Class - Rae- Wonder by R J Palacio. This is a good book because it is all about a boy August and he has a deformed face, and he covers it up with a rocket helmet so that no one can see it. The book tells a really good story as it gives the message that no matter what you look like, it doesn't really mean anything nor change anything. August is my favourite character as he is so nice and is caring. Anyone can read this book as it is amazing, and it delivers a good message.

Spitfires Class - Amanda - Awful Auntie by David Walliams. What I like about the book is that a courageous girl names Stella was kidnapped by her own Auntie but since she is a smart little girl, she was able to escape. But then her Auntie captured her again. My favourite character is Stella Saxby as she is so brave, courageous and smart, and always does the right thing. I would recommend this book to children, maybe to younger children that go to school as I think they will also like it.

Defiants Class - Melina  - Once by Morris Gleitzman. This book is about a boy in an Orphanage who is a Jew. His parents put him there because the Nazi's had put his family in danger. His name is Felix. We warm to Felix as he has a vivid imagination and is kind and supportive to his friends Dodie and Jankiel. The author really makes us warm to Felix because he is so naive and innocent.

Miss Spillman’s Esafety tips

Support wellbeing through nature

Online:

Search online for local conservation areas to volunteer for to look after our local areas (bush hill park currently run a litter picking group).

Search for preferred music for some soothing natural sounds.

Try out Geo-caching, it like a treasure hunt.

Spend some time watching the night sky and watching the stars.

Search online for live footage of nature, there are lots of live webcams.

Offline: ditch the phone

Do some planting, put down some roots.

Listen to bird song in the early evening, can you identify any of the birds.

Make and hang a bird feeder, where you can spot the birds from a window.

Park you worries, walk and visit a local park to play a game you enjoy.

Draw a picture of the natural environment around you.

How are you?

Members of Enfield’s Youth Parliament and the Young mayor worked on a short film to destigmatize mental health issues and to recognise the differing impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on young people.  They also share five ways to wellbeing.

'How are you?' can be viewed via this link and was launched today as part of Mental Health Awareness Week.

It was led and delivered by the young people of Enfield in partnership with Enfield’s Council’s Corporate Strategy Service and the Educational Psychology Service.   Our Voice Parent/Carer Forum also supported this initiative.
