Reception Family Reading Mornings

We wanted to thank all the parents/carers that took some time out of their busy days to join us on Friday mornings over this half term to read to the children and their friends. Everyone has really enjoyed this event.

The children are really excited to tell us all about the books that they have been reading at home using the Oxford Reading Buddy platform. Please ensure that your child has logged in to use this invaluable reading resource. If you require any assistance with this, please do not hesitate to ask your child's teacher. Thank you.

Reception

This week Reception have been reading the story 'Oi Frog' by Kes Gray. It is a funny rhyming story full of animals and funny rhymes. As the frog fires questions at Cat, he discovers where gorillas, puffins and wizards should sit, until the answer to his final question keeps him quiet for a while. Can guess what would sit on a frog?

The children have enjoyed a range of rhyming lessons, such a singing the rhyming song silly soup. We have been writing our own rhyming sentences and have enjoyed being the teacher alike the frog in the story.

“Gorillas sit on Chinchillas” Amelia said

“Frogs can sit on logs, dogs and togs” Nico said

Year 1

The children in Year 1 have been learning about fractions in our maths lessons.  Last week we had lots of fun finding a half of a shape, object and number and we extended our learning this week by calculating a quarter of a shape or an amount. T said "to find a quarter we need four equal parts."

Year 2

This half-term Year 2 have been reading George's Marvellous medicine and we have completed lots of written activities based on the book. This week as our exit activity we made our own "Marvellous Medicine" using bugs, soil, leaves and lots more interesting ingredients.  We then wrote instructions on how to make a potion.

Year 3

Year 3 have had an eventful week with the maths workshops which took place daily for a each Year 3 class. The children got the chance to showcase the different strategies they use to solve maths problems using the four operations - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We had a good turn out of parents. Have a look at some of the pictures!

Year 4

In Science, we have continued to explore teeth and this time have been applying our knowledge of the role different teeth play in breaking down food to extinct animals. We discovered that scientists use fossils of extinct animals' teeth to decide what diet that animal had (carnivore, omnivore or herbivore). We looked at pictures of skulls and had to become scientists and decide the diet of each animal using evidence.

Year 5

This week Year 5 have had a fun packed week with a visit to a Cemevi and Science investigations. As part of our learning on Alevism, we visited the Alevi place of worship called a Cemevi.  We learned about the 12 parts to an Alevi ceremony and how a Cemevi is an important place for Alevi’s to gather, celebrate and worship. The weather was kind, the children respectful, the building was beautiful and our hosts were very kind and generous.

In Science the children have been learning about separating mixtures and changing materials. They investigated how to clean dirty water by separating the solid materials mixed into water (liquid ). The children used different equipment to sieve, separate and filter solids and liquids in a mixture. We manged to remove most of the large particles in the water but were unable to make the water completely clean enough to drink.

Year 6

Year 6’s week of fun

It has been a busy week for year 6 this week. Those that have gone to PGL have had a week packed full of activities that have pushed them out of their comfort zones and made them confront their fears! A highlight for many has been the canoeing and the giant swing. Lots of giggles and memories have been made.

Those children that remained at school have also had a fun packed week. With a mixture of trips out and activities within school, there hasn’t been a dull moment. From making flapjacks to getting into the water, they have had a lovely week.
