George Spicer Newsletter - 26th April 2024

Attendance – you are now able to view your child’s attendance by logging into the Arbor App.  Please note that if your child’s attendance is below 90%, we will not authorise any absence without medical evidence (e.g., doctor’s certificate or letter, hospital appointment card, prescription or the prescribed medication, or text message appointment).

Reporting Absences - You must call in every day if your child is absent. Please, when reporting absences, leave a message with your child's name, class and the reason for absence.

Sickness - If your child is unwell due to vomiting/diarrhoea, please ensure you do not send them to school for at least 24 hours since their last spell of sickness.

Lateness - The number of children arriving late in the mornings is high. Unfortunately, it is the same children repeatedly.  Gates close at 9am and learning starts promptly at this time.  If your child is 5 minutes late every day, this equates to nearly 3 whole days of missed learning, plus it’s disruptive for other children.  Please try to drop your child/children at least 5/10 minutes early to avoid this continuous lateness.

Book Fair - On Friday 3rd May, up to and including Friday 10th May, we will be holding a book fair for you to buy books for your children after school at both the Sketty Road and Kimberley Gardens sites. Please put the dates in your diaries and there will be more details to follow. Please visit the link for more information. School Book Fair

Reception

For Mathematics this week, Reception have been learning about number bonds to 5 and 10. We have been focusing on a deeper understanding of number, to explore how combing different amounts, results in the same value.

The children have enjoyed a range of learning opportunities to further develop and embed their learning.  Next week, we plan to continue our exploration of number bonds and use active learning opportunities to gather the children's findings and evidence.

"Four hearts and one triangle make five altogether," said Freya.

"There are different ways to make five and ten," said Leah.

Year 1

This week, the children in Year 1 have been learning about the seven continents of the world.  Eden said “a continent is a massive piece of land that is made up of lots of different countries.”  The children completed a worksheet and enjoyed playing an interactive game, identifying and naming the continents.  They also enjoyed a sing-a-long and Leo said “learning the song helped me remember the names of the continents.”

Year 2

This week in Year 2, we started our new PSHE topic 'Relationships'. We discussed our families and how they are all different but the qualities we most treasure are the same. We wrote down the ingredients for a 'Happy Home Cake' and decorated it to reflect how we feel within our families.

Year 3

In English, Year 3 have been writing a range of sentences in the present tense and know the differences between present simple and present continuous sentences. In PSHE, the children have been exploring different roles and responsibilities and the importance of gender equality. The children have also started learning how to read the time on a digital and analogue clock.

Year 4

In Writing, we started our week by reading the first chapter of our new focus book, The Night Bus Hero. We learnt all about the main character, Hector, who enjoys playing pranks on his teachers. Inspired by Hector's love of drawing comic strips, we used this style to plan our own prank in preparation for our writing this week.

In History, we studied the Battle of Towton between the Yorkists and the Lancastrians.  We analysed the reasons why the Lancastrians lost, despite having a larger army.  We worked in groups to sort each reason into different categories.

Year 5

This week, Year 5 have been continuing writing their biographies of Nelson Mandela, focussing on his activism and time in prison up until him eventually becoming president of South Africa. This is our last week learning about him. We have been particularly impressed with his commitment to equality, his resilience and positive mindset.

In Science, we are learning about different states of matter and how to separate different substances and mixtures. We were given sieves to separate some mixtures – we investigated what could be separated and what could not. Then we had to devise the best way of separating the remaining mixture by making our own equipment from a selection of equipment given to us. In some cases we used the properties of the material to separate them, for example paperclips are magnetic so we used a magnet to separate them for the rest of the mixture.

Year 6

RW: Worship through Art

As part of our new RW unit, Year 6 have been looking at the big question:
Is it better to express your religion through arts and architecture or in charity and generosity?

This week, we looked at the design of a Mosque. After learning about some of the key features of a mosque, we looked at several different mosques and described how they made us feel.

Once we had discussed the features and design, we took inspiration from this and began to design our own holy place. Some of us were inspired to design a mosque whilst others designed a building which, to them, symbolised not a particular religion but the feeling of calmness or peace.

Netball Match

On Tuesday, the 23rd of April, 11 year five and sixes children attended a netball event at Enfield County Lower School. The children had been practising for the whole of the spring term so they were more than ready for this competition. The squad played three matches, winning our first 7-2! The second game was a lot more difficult and although we were winning at halftime, we succumbed to our first defeat. Our third game was tightly contested, with both teams taking the lead at various points during the game, sadly we lost 3-2, but it was a well-fought encounter.

The team showed great resilience and incredible teamwork to compete against three challenging schools.

We were also overwhelmed by the parent and family support for the netball squad! It really made a huge difference, so thank you all for coming along to support!

Y5 - James, Aron, Layla, Emilia, Luciana, Aisha, Ty
