George Spicer Newsletter - 1st March 2024

Parents Consultations - Spring Term are on Thursday 14th March 2024 from 8.30am – 6.00pm. School is closed to pupils.

Appointments are now open. Booking will close on Sunday 10th March at 10pm. See separate email from SchoolCloud on how to book. For families who need to book separate appointments, or if you are having problems booking, please contact the school office at office@georgespicer.enfield.sch.uk  Note the school is closed to all pupils however,  your child is invited to attend the meeting with you.  Both sites will be open and the meetings will be held in the halls for Y1 – Y6. Reception classes will be held in the Daffodil classroom.

World Book Day – Thursday 7th March - This year we had not planned to do a whole school dress up as a book character day, however we are aware that some parents/carers have been making or buying costumes. Therefore, we will make it an OPTIONAL day to dress up as a character from a book, otherwise it is school uniform or PE kit as per usual.  More details will follow about what we are doing to celebrate the day, but these will be in-school and focused on the enjoyment of books and reading.

Attendance – you are now able to view your child’s attendance by logging into the Arbor App.  Please note that if your child’s attendance is below 90%, we will not authorise any absence without medical evidence (e.g., doctor’s certificate or letter, hospital appointment card, prescription or the prescribed medication, or text message appointment).

Reporting Absences - You must call in every day if your child is absent. Please, when reporting absences, leave a message with your child's name, class and the reason for absence.

Sickness - If your child is unwell due to vomiting/diarrhoea, please ensure you do not send them to school for at least 24 hours since their last spell of sickness.

Lateness - The number of children arriving late in the mornings is high. Unfortunately, it is the same children repeatedly.  Gates close at 9am and learning starts promptly at this time.  If your child is 5 minutes late every day, this equates to nearly 3 whole days of missed learning, plus it’s disruptive for other children.  Please try to drop your child/children at least 5/10 minutes early to avoid this continuous lateness.

Be prepared - Please make sure you are sending your child in with all their belongings in the morning to prevent disruptions in class during the school day.

Breakfast and After-School club queries - Please note that all communication with basc is via their email basc@georgespicer.enfield.sch.uk NOT the office email.

Playleaders - We are currently looking for lunchtime playleaders. For more information, please visit our website. George Spicer website

Donations - Please can we have donations of tissues/wipes/plasters for our welfare.

Reception

Reception: People who help us.

This week the Reception Classes had a visit from Miss Barker. She helps children when they are feeling ill or if they are hurt in school. The children enjoyed asking her questions and then participated in role-play in the classroom. They researched what nurses do to help us and discussed their findings with each other. They challenged themselves by writing sentences about what nurses do and some even had a go at writing the word stethoscope! Thank you to all the nurses out there for all your help.

Year 1

This week in Year 1, we have been writing riddles. We learnt that riddles are puzzles that give clues to solve. We had to find out lots of facts about our animals before we could write our riddles. We played true or false and went on fact hunts. We used lots of adjectives to describe our animal. Can you guess the animal?

Year 2

This week in Year 2 we have been learning about The Great Fire of London. The children have been writing non-chronological reports of the event that happened in 1666 on Pudding Lane.

We have designed our Tudor houses and explored the materials that would be good for modern-day houses.

In DT, we have created houses using a mixture of materials such as paper, cardboard and tape/glue.

Year 3

Year 3 enjoyed their ‘wow’ introduction to their new book - Flotsam by David Wiesner to help inspire their writing throughout the week. They had a field day opening up a treasure chest and exploring different beach related objects to help build on their vocabulary and imagination! They were able to make interesting predictions and think about what vocabulary and sentences could be added to the famous children’s book. David Wiesner watch out!

Year 4

Year 4 pupils have been studying Elizabeth Catlette's work, particularly her prints, as part of the WINDRUSH topic. Continuing from the previous term, children learnt about various printing techniques and created artwork by sketching, with the end piece being a print of their sketch depicting the human eye with the WINDRUSH mirrored within.

Year 5

This week Year 5 have been continuing to read and write based on the book - Journey to Jo’Burg. We were writing first person, present tense narratives about Naledi and Tiro’s journey to walk the 300k journey to Johannesburg. Along the way they meet with a boy who works on an orange farm who gives them some food and a place to sleep for the night. The children found it tricky keeping their writing to present tense but they went back over their work in purple pen to edit and check it a few times until they were happy they got it.

In Art we were looking at bias in art by looking at how two different kings were presented positively and negatively in their portraits. We investigated the similarities and differences in how the portraits depicted the kings. We learnt that propaganda is used to deliberately mislead the viewer and give a positive or negative impression.

Year 6

This week, we have begun our topic on WW2. To start, we looked at the Treaty of Versailles and the conditions that were imposed on Germany at the end of WW1. After learning about the different aspects, we explained why they were chosen and the impact this had on the country. Using primary sources, we were able to analyse and learn more about this historic event and how it can be considered to have prompted WW2.

Sports News

Y5 and Y6 Netball Team:

This week, our Y5 & 6 Netball Teams represented George Spicer in our second round of netball matches. The team have been training very well with Mr Rasheed in the build up to this competition. We played 2 matches: one against One Degree and the other against St Andrew’s. We won our first game and lost our second. The team played incredibly well, using a lot of the tactics they practised in training, as well as using our speed and passing ability to launch multiple counter-attacks. We also want to thank all the parents/carers and family members that came to support the team. It was hugely appreciated! The team should be very proud of their achievements!

Y5 & 6 Boys’ Football:

On Tuesday 20th February, the Y5 and Y6 football team had their second round of matches against other local Enfield schools. We played two matches: one against One Degree School and the other against St Andrew’s School. Both were incredibly tough matches and the team played very well, working together and taking their chances. We were very proud to have won both games! 2-0 against One Degree and 1-0 against St Andrew’s. We have maintained our 100% win record across all 5 games in our league! We were overwhelmed with the support from staff, parents and family members, which undoubtedly contributed to the victories!

Please look out for the email, which will arrive next week, to launch our exciting new reading platform that the children can use at home, Oxford Reading Buddy. The teachers and children have been busy setting up their accounts and avatars for them to use. Oxford Reading Buddy is a digital reading service to help your child to develop important skills in reading and to encourage them to read more. It contains hundreds of digital books from Oxford University Press’s well-known reading series including Project X and the Biff, Chip and Kipper stories from Oxford Reading Tree – all matched to your child’s reading ability. It offers special Coaching eBooks to develop comprehension. We look forward to hearing from the children all about the books that they have read!
